Money you're owed

It could pay for itself

Money a home can be owed under the official rules, and some of it you have to claim yourself. Home Alerts tells you when a long power cut may mean compensation, and the official way to claim: for your own home, free. Premium, from November (paid), goes further: it checks what your household may be entitled to and gets each claim ready to send.

£100
A long power cut

If a fault leaves you without power for 12 hours or more, then £45 for every 12 hours after. The wait is longer when thousands are off (24 hours) or in a storm (24 or 48 hours, then £90). Usually paid without a claim.

£40
A planned cut without notice

If your network gives you less than 2 days' notice of planned work. You have to claim this one, within a month.

£100
Four or more cuts in a year

Four or more cuts of 3 hours or longer between April and March. You have to claim this one too.

£25
Each very cold week

A Cold Weather Payment, November to March, if you get certain benefits. Scotland pays a Winter Heating Payment instead.

£7,500
Off a heat pump

Through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, or £9,000 for homes off the gas grid on oil or LPG. England and Wales.

Power cut payments are Ofgem's guaranteed standards for Great Britain from 1 April 2026; Northern Ireland's are different. Work yours out now with our power cut compensation calculator, check Cold Weather Payments for your postcode, or read how the heat pump grant works.

What it does

Alerts when it actually affects you

A power cut your network lists at your postcode, or an amber or red weather warning or a flood warning that covers your address. Usually within 15 minutes of the official source, and only when something changes.

One more address, on Premium

From November, Premium (paid) adds one more address, such as a parent's home.

Kit sized to your home

Tell us what you have and we show what's missing. Own a power station? We'll tell you how long it would run your fridge in a cut.

Fuel near home

The cheapest forecourts within 10 miles of your postcode, with the time each price was reported, from the national Fuel Finder scheme.

Calm, and from the official sources

Met Office, Environment Agency and the power networks. Every figure shows where it came from and when we read it.

Questions

Is it free?+

Yes. Your own home's dashboard and email alerts will be free, including a note when a long power cut may mean compensation. Premium, from November, will be paid: it checks what your household may be entitled to and gets each claim ready to send, adds text alerts, and watches one more address, such as a parent's home.

How is it different from the Met Office app?+

The Met Office app covers the weather. Home Alerts puts the weather together with power cuts from your network and flood warnings, for your address, and tells you only when something affects it.

When does it open?+

In October. The first 100 people on the list get in first, and everyone on the list gets an email the day it opens for their area.

What do you keep about me?+

Your email, your postcode and the answers you choose to give here. We use them to tell you when Home Alerts opens and to decide where to launch first. We never sell them, and you can ask us to delete them at any time.

Is it an official warning service?+

No. PreparedBritain is independent and not affiliated with HM Government. Official warnings always come first: call 105 for a power cut, Floodline on 0345 988 1188 for flooding, and 999 in an emergency.

Which areas will it cover?+

The whole UK for Met Office weather warnings. Power cut alerts at launch cover the UK Power Networks, National Grid, SSEN and Northern Powergrid areas; we can't read the live data of Electricity North West, SP Energy Networks or NIE Networks yet. Flood warnings start in England.

I run a housing association, council team or care group+
