When two products are close, commission can decide which one we pick. A clearly better product always wins. Amazon prices come from Amazon's own product data and show the date and time they were retrieved. Prices at other retailers are checked by us, less often. Prices and stock can change at any time, so always check the retailer's price before you buy.

How the money works

Some links on this site are affiliate links. There are two kinds. If you click a retailer link and buy something, the retailer pays us a small commission. If you click an installer or quote link and request a quote, that firm may pay us a fee for the referral. Different firms pay different amounts. You don't pay us anything, and we don't add anything to the price you're offered.

Insurance comparison links

Some pages about flooding, burst pipes, home security and household paperwork link to home-insurance comparison sites: Go.Compare and MoneySuperMarket. If you go on to buy a policy after clicking one of those links, the comparison site may pay us a fixed fee. The fee is the same whichever policy you choose, and it never depends on the insurer. We are not authorised to give financial advice and we don't: we link to whole-of-market comparisons, never to a particular insurer or policy, we make no claims about what you might save, and the free official routes (such as Flood Re's own eligibility checker) sit alongside. Read the policy documents before you buy anything.

What commissions can and can't do

Picks. When two products are close, commission can decide which one we pick. A clearly better product always wins, and a zero commission never keeps a good product off a table. Where the best answer earns us nothing — tap water in rotated bottles, a wind-up radio you already own — we say so.
Installer recommendations. Where we link to installers, we also link to the free official register, and the fee a firm pays us never decides whether we list it. We don't pass your details to installers or retailers: any quote form you fill in is the firm's own, under its own privacy policy. How we handle newsletter signups is in our privacy policy.
Coverage. We tell you when not to buy. Every review page carries an honest callout for the situations where the product is the wrong choice. That's a feature of this site, not a legal formality.
Advertisement features. A company can pay for an article about its product or service. We write it ourselves, it is labelled “Advertisement feature” with the brand's name at the top, and its links are marked as paid links. Buying one doesn't get a product reviewed. Nobody can pay to be included in a comparison page, a review, a verdict or a pick, and no merchant sees or edits those pages. When two products are close, commission can decide which one we pick. Free samples. If a maker sends us a product free to review, the review is labelled as an ad at the top and beside the verdict, and names the maker. We publish what we find, good or bad. The maker doesn't see or approve the review before it's published, and a free sample doesn't earn a place in a comparison or a better verdict. Our terms for makers are under send us a product.

Prices and availability

We show when each price was last checked. Amazon prices come from Amazon's own product data, with the date and time they were retrieved. Prices at other retailers are checked by us, less often. We don't show installer prices: they depend on a survey of your home. Prices move, though — the price at the retailer at the moment you buy, or in the installer's written quote, is the one that counts, so always confirm it there.

How we review

Every review is labelled Researched or Used and reviewed by us. Where we have bought a product, or been sent it free, and used it ourselves, the review says which.
