Boiler cover: when it is worth it, when it isn't, and what to check

A boiler that fails in a cold snap is the winter emergency most households actually have. A cover plan is one answer; an annual service and a repair fund is the other. Here is what a plan buys, what it doesn't, the five things to check before you join, and what to do on the day it breaks.

What a plan actually buys

A number to ring and a fixed monthly cost

The plan's value is the call-out and the parts and labour for a repair, on a monthly cost you can budget for, rather than a bill you can't. That is worth most to a household with no savings buffer and an older boiler.

Usually an annual service

Most plans include the yearly service, which you should be having anyway. If you already pay for one, that part of the plan is money you are spending already.

Not a new boiler

If the boiler is beyond economic repair the plan does not buy you a new one. Some plans contribute towards a replacement; read exactly what, and for boilers of what age.

The honest bit

If your boiler is still under its manufacturer's warranty, a plan is mostly paying twice: the warranty covers the parts, and the annual service the warranty requires is what keeps it valid. And if you could pay for a repair on the day, a repair fund does the plan's job without the contract. Cover earns its keep for an older boiler in a home that cannot absorb a surprise bill.

Five things to check before you join

  1. 1

    The boiler's age limit

Many plans exclude boilers over a set age, or cover them for less. Check the limit against your boiler's installation date before you pay a first month.

  2. 2

    The excess

A lower monthly price usually means a higher excess per claim. Decide which you would rather pay: a little every month, or more when something breaks.

  3. 3

The waiting period and the first weeks

Plans normally have a period after you join in which breakdowns are not covered, and they exclude pre-existing faults. A plan bought after the boiler has stopped working will not fix that breakdown.

  4. 4

    Insurance or maintenance contract?

Some plans are insurance, regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, with access to the Financial Ombudsman if something goes wrong. Others are maintenance contracts and are not. The policy document says which.

  5. 5

    What the alternative costs

A Gas Safe registered engineer's annual service is a one-off cost, and a repair fund in a savings account covers the same risk without a contract. Price both against the plan over a year and decide with the numbers in front of you.

Whether or not you take a plan

Two things protect you either way. Have the boiler serviced once a year by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and check the engineer's ID card against the register. And know what to do on the day it stops: the most common winter fault is a frozen condensate pipe, which you can often clear yourself in ten minutes.

Common questions

Is boiler cover worth it?

It depends on the boiler and the household. Cover is most useful for an older boiler out of its manufacturer's warranty in a home with no savings to absorb a repair bill. A boiler still under warranty, or a household that can pay for a repair when it happens, is often better off with an annual service and a repair fund. We don't give financial advice: compare the plan's yearly cost and excess against the cost of a service and a repair fund.

Does boiler cover include an annual service?

Most plans include one, and most say the service is a condition of the cover. If you already pay for an annual service, count that as money you are spending already when you compare.

Will a plan replace my boiler if it can't be repaired?

Generally no. Some plans contribute a fixed amount towards a replacement for boilers under a certain age; others offer nothing. The plan document sets it out, so read that section before joining.

Do landlords need boiler cover?

No law requires cover, but landlords in Great Britain must have gas appliances and flues in their rented property safety-checked every 12 months by a Gas Safe registered engineer and give tenants a copy of the record, under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998. Some landlord plans bundle that check; you can also book it separately.

What if my boiler breaks down in a cold snap and I have no cover?

Call a Gas Safe registered engineer; the register lets you check any engineer's ID. If your condensate pipe has frozen, which is the most common winter fault, our guide shows how to thaw it safely before you call anyone. If anyone at home is older, disabled or unwell, the Priority Services Register can get you extra help from your energy supplier.
