What the three levels mean

The Environment Agency uses three levels, and the difference matters:

Flood alert — flooding is possible. Be prepared: check your flood plan, move valuables up, and avoid low-lying footpaths and bridges. Alerts are common and often stand down without flooding.

Flood warning — flooding is expected. Act now: move people, pets and cars to safety, turn off gas, water and electricity if it's safe, and put flood protection in place.

Severe flood warningdanger to life. Follow the advice of emergency services and be ready to evacuate.

Whatever the level, never drive or walk through flood water — it's the most common cause of death in a flood.
