Best jump starters UK (2026) — compared & price-tracked

A jump starter is a battery pack — usually lithium, usually small enough for the glovebox — that restarts a car with a flat battery: no second vehicle, no leads across a neighbour's bonnet, no wait for a breakdown van. A flat battery is one of the most ordinary ways a car lets you down, and cold mornings are when it tends to happen, so a charged pack earns its place in any household that depends on its car for work, school runs or caring for someone. The 22 units here run from just under £30 to £370, and within any one maker's range price mostly buys engine coverage: the meaningful difference between them is the size of engine each will genuinely start, not the amp figure on the box, which is a marketing peak rather than a measured cranking rating. Across brands those coverage claims stop being comparable — which is how a £30 pack ends up printing a bigger number than a £75 one. The useful question to ask before buying is simply what sits on your drive. Prices below are tracked against UK retailers and checked against each manufacturer's own documentation.

Jump starters compared for UK households

Before you buy

Start from your engine, because it is the one spec that matters. Manufacturers state coverage as engine size — "up to 6.0L petrol / 3.0L diesel" — and while those are their own figures rather than independent test results, they are far more honest than amp headlines. For a small petrol hatchback, NOCO's GB20 (petrol to 4.0L, with diesel rated Not Recommended) or the AstroAI B8 is plenty. A typical family car or light diesel sits comfortably inside the NOCO GB40, Ring's RJS020, or the RJS030 — which also publishes an honest 350A starting figure and is rated for start/stop vehicles. A larger diesel, van or 4x4 justifies the GB70 or GBX75 class. Only motorhomes, 24V trucks and fleets need the VTOMAN V-Truck or the 17.6kg SIP Rescue Pac — and on 24V the SIP assists an HGV start rather than guaranteeing a solo crank.

Peak current is the column to trust least — treat it as branding, and where a maker quotes a sustained or cranking figure, use that: CTEK is unusually transparent, publishing 2060A of maximum cranking current beneath the RB 4000's 4000A headline. Engine coverage is the honest comparison, always lower for diesel because a diesel takes more turning over. Capacity, in watt-hours, is the lithium actually inside — it governs retries on a cold morning and how useful the pack is as a power bank: the NOCO GBX75's 74Wh with 60W USB-C both ways earns the name, while the GB150's 10W output does not. Extras are where value hides: SOS torch modes for a dark verge, USB-C fast charging, and on NOCO's AX65 and the Nebo Ultimate a tyre compressor. The wider roadside kit, including what to do when a car meets flood water, sits in our winter storm preparation and driving in floods guides.

There are no subscriptions or running costs in this category; what a jump starter asks of you instead is charge discipline and a sensible home. Lithium packs self-discharge slowly, so top yours up every three to six months and after every use, whatever the standby claim on the box — GOOLOO advertises 24 months; do not lean on it. Storage is the genuine safety point. Manufacturers cap charging at around 40–45°C and operation at about 50–60°C, and the cabin of a car parked in summer sun can pass those limits, so the pack lives indoors and travels with you in winter — the season it earns its keep — rather than baking on a parcel shelf in July. Two exceptions: the SIP is AGM lead-acid and wants the opposite regime, recharged immediately after use and kept topped up; and Milwaukee's M18 tool has no internal battery, so the storage advice attaches to its slot-in packs instead.

Ignore the theatre around pricing and specs. "Was" prices in this category are routinely inflated anchors — VTOMAN's £399.99 against a £200 selling price, GOOLOO's permanent "from £189.99" strikethrough — so judge the number in front of you, which is what our price tracking is for. Ignore "waterproof" claims too: the best packs here are IP65, meaning dust-tight and resistant to low-pressure water jets with the ports closed, not submersible, and TOPDON publishes no IP rating at all despite "waterproof" appearing in some listings. Ignore engine claims that outrun physics — AstroAI's 37Wh P10 carries a 10.0L petrol / 8.0L diesel headline no pack this size can honour; realistic coverage is nearer 3.0L petrol / 2.5L diesel. And ignore amp-led comparisons between brands entirely: NOCO publishes no cranking figure, TOPDON and Ring do, and CTEK publishes three different numbers — which is why this page compares engines.

A few units solve different problems and should be judged on their own terms. The CTEK CS FREE is not a jump starter at all: it revives a flat battery with about fifteen minutes of charging before you start — CTEK's own figure — and Parkers' independent test put a full recovery to health at around eight hours, so it suits a planned rescue on the driveway, not a roadside emergency. Milwaukee's M18 unit makes sense only if you already own M18 batteries: £280 buys a bare tool, and adding a battery and charger takes the true cost towards £400. The combination units — NOCO's AX65 with a tyre compressor, Nebo's Ultimate with a compressor, a floodlight and a UK three-pin socket for very low-draw devices — earn their premium only if you do not already own those tools. Building the boot kit from scratch? Our household emergency plan guide puts all of this in order.

The 30-second verdict

Top pick: NOCO Boost Plus GB40 Jump Starter. A well-built, pocketable jump starter that does exactly what it promises for most family cars, with genuine safety touches (spark-proof clamps, reverse-polarity protection) rather than just a big amp number on the box. Like any lithium pack, keep it somewhere temperate — NOCO's own figures put charging at 0–40°C, and a car left in full sun on a hot day can get well past that, so a glovebox or an indoor shelf is a safer home than a parcel shelf or boot over summer.

NOCO Boost Plus GB40 Jump Starter

4.5

Who it's for: A compact glovebox backup that gets a flat petrol car or small diesel going without waiting for a breakdown van.

  • Small and light (about 1kg) enough to live permanently in a glovebox or door pocket
  • Spark-proof clamps and reverse-polarity protection make it safe for non-mechanics to use, even in the dark
  • Doubles as a USB power bank and 100-lumen LED torch with an SOS mode, and holds charge for months between top-ups
  • 1000A is a peak/marketing figure, not true cranking amps — real-world coverage is petrol engines up to about 6.0L and diesels up to about 3.0L
  • Buying secondhand? Older stock recharges via the slower micro-USB rather than the USB-C port current units ship with

Don't buy if you drive a large diesel, van or 4x4 over about 3.0L — step up to NOCO's bigger GB50/GB70, which carry the amperage this model doesn't.

Who it's for: Drivers who need to cover a bigger diesel - a van, 4x4 or larger family car - as well as ordinary petrol cars, in a pack that still fits in a glovebox.

The GB70 is NOCO's mid-large Boost size: built to the same spark-proof, reverse-polarity-protected standard as the smaller GB40 but rated for meaningfully bigger engines. It costs more than most drivers need, so it's worth checking your engine size against the GB40 before paying the difference.

  • NOCO states coverage up to 8.0L petrol and 6.0L diesel engines - enough for most vans and 4x4s, not just small cars
  • Spark-proof clamps and reverse-polarity protection make it safe for a non-mechanic to connect correctly in the dark
  • Doubles as a USB power bank (via USB-A out) and 400-lumen, 7-mode LED torch with SOS/strobe
  • Roughly £70-90 more than NOCO's entry GB40, which is enough jump-starter for most single petrol cars
  • 56Wh lithium pack shouldn't be left in a hot car through summer or a cold shed over winter - keep it somewhere temperate between uses to protect battery lifespan

Don't buy if your only vehicle is a small petrol car - NOCO's cheaper GB40 (1000A, up to 8.0L petrol claim scales down accordingly, realistically small-to-mid petrol cars and diesels to ~3.0L) covers that job for less. Step up to the GB70 only if you regularly need to start a larger diesel, van or 4x4.

NOCO Boost X GBX55: 1750A UltraSafe Jump Starter Power Pack – For 7.5L Petrol and 5.0L Diesel Engines

4.3

Who it's for: Drivers who want one mid-size jump starter that covers most family cars and small diesels, rather than buying NOCO's biggest (and priciest) unit just in case.

The GBX55 sits mid-range in NOCO's Boost X line and covers the vast majority of UK petrol cars and light diesels with headroom to spare. It's a sensible default pick rather than the cheapest or the most powerful option. Like any lithium pack, it's rated to +50°C, but a parcel shelf in direct summer sun can exceed that, so it's best stored in the footwell or indoors, with a top-up charge every three months or so.

  • Covers most family cars and light diesels, not just small hatchbacks
  • IP65-rated case — dust-tight and water-resistant, though not submersible — plus spark-proof, reverse-polarity-protected clamps make it safe to leave in the boot
  • USB-C input/output means it recharges from a normal charger or power bank and can return the favour, topping up a phone when needed
  • The '1750A peak' figure is a marketing number, not a true cranking-amp rating — go by the litre coverage (7.5L petrol/5.0L diesel) when comparing models, not the amps
  • Costs noticeably more than NOCO's smaller GBX35/GBX45, which are enough for most small cars

Don't buy if Don't buy the GBX55 if you drive a large diesel pickup, van or 4x4 over roughly 5.0L diesel/7.5L petrol — step up to the GBX75 or GBX125. And if you only ever drive a small hatchback, the cheaper GBX35/GBX45 will do the job for less.

Who it's for: Households with a bigger petrol car, 4x4, van or light diesel, who want one unit that both starts the car and doubles as a genuinely useful USB-C power bank.

NOCO states honest engine-size coverage (8.5L petrol / 6.5L diesel) rather than just a peak-amp headline, and it backs that up with reverse-polarity protection and spark-proof clamps that make it hard to use unsafely. It's a premium price, but the extra size and 60W USB-C charging justify it for larger vehicles. Like all lithium packs, keep it indoors rather than in a hot car boot over summer — heat shortens the cell's life.

  • Stated engine coverage (8.5L petrol/6.5L diesel), not just an inflated amp number
  • 60W USB-C Power Delivery doubles as a genuine phone/laptop charger
  • Reverse-polarity protection and spark-proof clamps reduce the risk of user error
  • Expensive next to smaller jump starters covering typical hatchbacks
  • IP65 only applies with the ports closed — it isn't fully waterproof

Don't buy if You only ever drive a small petrol hatchback or supermini — a smaller, cheaper NOCO Boost model (e.g. GBX55) will jump it fine without paying for capacity you won't use.

Who it's for: Owners of large 4x4s, pickups, vans or big diesel engines who want serious jump-starting headroom in one unit.

A well-built jump starter for genuinely large engines - petrol up to 9.0 litres and diesel up to 7.0 litres - from a brand with a strong safety-engineering reputation. Treat the 3000A peak-amp figure as a marketing number rather than a true cranking-amp rating, and, like any lithium pack, keep it indoors rather than in a hot car over summer.

  • Reverse-polarity protection and spark-proof clamps make it safe to use even for non-mechanics
  • Genuinely rated for large diesels up to 7.0L and big petrol engines up to 9.0L, where smaller jump starters fall short
  • A 500-lumen torch with SOS mode and a 12V accessory port add everyday utility, though USB charging in and out is a modest 5V/2.1A rather than fast
  • The 3000A peak-amp figure is a marketing number, not a true cranking-amp rating - the litre coverage is the more honest guide
  • Considerably pricier than NOCO's smaller GB40/GB70 units, and overkill for a standard petrol hatchback or family car

Don't buy if you drive a standard petrol car or small diesel - a smaller, cheaper NOCO unit (like the GB40 or GB70) will start it just as reliably for less money.

NOCO Boost X GBX155: 4250A UltraSafe Jump Starter Power Pack – For 10.0L Petrol and 8.0L Diesel Engines

4.3

Who it's for: Households with a larger petrol car, a diesel 4x4/van/motorhome, or more than one vehicle to cover.

A genuinely capable jump starter for the largest engines on the road, with sensible safety design — but the 10.0L petrol/8.0L diesel rating covers HGV- and marine-sized engines that no ordinary UK household car needs. Most readers should look at a smaller Boost X model instead; this is a premium buy for a specific niche, not a default pick, and the marketing amp figure is not the number that matters.

  • Covers larger engines than most household jump starters — up to 10.0-litre petrol, 8.0-litre diesel
  • UltraSafe 2.0 spark-proof design with reverse-polarity protection makes it hard to use unsafely
  • 60W USB-C fast charging doubles as a genuinely useful power bank for phones, tablets and laptops
  • It's substantially over-specced for most UK cars — a typical 1.0-2.0L petrol or 1.5-2.0L diesel is covered comfortably by NOCO's smaller GB40 or GBX45, for roughly a quarter to a third of the price
  • At 2.64kg it's noticeably heavier and bulkier than a glovebox-sized jump starter

Don't buy if You drive a typical UK family car. Most petrol cars (1.0-2.0L) and diesels (1.5-2.0L) are covered just as reliably by NOCO's smaller, cheaper GB40 or GBX45 — which is most households. Save the GBX155 for a genuinely large diesel van, motorhome, 4x4, or a multi-vehicle household.

Who it's for: Drivers who want one glovebox tool that can both jump-start the car and top up or reinflate a tyre, not just a jump pack alone.

A well-built two-in-one from a brand with a strong safety record — reverse-polarity protection and spark-proof clamps are exactly what you want in something this powerful. Treat the 6.0L diesel figure as NOCO's best-case ceiling rather than a guarantee: with a 31.8Wh pack also running the compressor, a cold-weather start on a large diesel near that limit will be marginal, with fewer retries than on a smaller engine. As with any lithium pack, keep it somewhere temperate rather than left in a hot car through summer.

  • Reverse-polarity protection and spark-proof clamps make it hard to use unsafely
  • Air compressor (100 PSI / 67 LPM) is genuinely useful for a slow puncture or seasonal tyre top-ups, not just a marketing add-on
  • 60W USB-C output doubles as a proper power bank for phones and laptops
  • Costs noticeably more than a plain jump starter without a compressor
  • Heavier and bulkier (3.15kg) than pocket-sized packs, so less ideal where boot space is tight

Don't buy if Skip it if you already own a separate tyre inflator — you'd be paying the air-compressor premium twice. NOCO's plain Boost packs (e.g. GB40, GB70) cover similar engine sizes for less if you only need the jump-start function.

Who it's for: Van, truck, and motorhome owners who want one heavy-duty pack that jump-starts a large diesel engine, tops up phones and laptops, and lights the roadside.

A genuinely large-capacity jump starter with the battery to back up its claims, plus enough charging power to double as an emergency power bank. Treat the 6000A peak-amps figure as a marketing number rather than a true cranking-amps rating — the 12V/24V selectable switching and reverse-polarity protection matter more day to day.

  • Large 36,400mAh/133.6Wh battery — VTOMAN claims around 70 jump-starts per charge on 12V vehicles, 45 on 24V
  • 145W DC input recharges the unit itself in about 90 minutes (the USB-C port is slow-charge only, ~18W)
  • 12V/24V selectable, with reverse-polarity and 10-point protection, suits mixed car/van/truck households
  • 6000A is a peak-current marketing figure, not an independently verified cranking-amps rating, so it's hard to cross-shop against CA-rated competitors
  • At 2.9kg and 270x189x160mm it's bulkier than a car-only jump pack — overkill if you only ever start a small petrol hatchback

Don't buy if Skip this if you only run a small petrol car and don't want to carry a 2.9kg unit, or if you can't keep it somewhere temperature-stable — like all lithium packs, it shouldn't be left in a hot car through summer.

TOPDON JS2000 Pro Portable Car Battery Jump Starter

4.2

Who it's for: Petrol and small-to-mid-size diesel car owners who want jump-start cover plus a general-purpose USB power bank and torch in one unit.

TOPDON rates the JS2000 Pro at 550A sustained for 2 seconds — the true cranking-amps figure — with the widely quoted 2500A only a marketing peak, so judge starting power by the former. TOPDON's own claim of up to 8.0L petrol / 6.0L diesel coverage is a manufacturer figure rather than a tested one; against the 550A rating a more realistic ceiling is around 6.0L petrol / 3.0L diesel, less for a cold start. Reverse-polarity protection is built in as standard and the unit doubles usefully as a power bank, but like any lithium pack it shouldn't be left in a hot car through summer.

  • Reverse-polarity and multi-point smart protection built in as standard
  • Doubles as a 16,000mAh USB power bank and LED torch, not just a jump starter
  • Comes with jumper cables and an EVA carry case at a mid-range price versus premium brands like NOCO
  • The 2500A peak-amps figure is a marketing number — the true cranking-amps rating is 550A for 2 seconds, so judge starting power by that rather than TOPDON's 8.0L petrol/6.0L diesel engine-coverage claim
  • Lithium pack needs storing indoors; leaving it in a hot car boot over summer will degrade the battery

Don't buy if Skip it if your vehicle is a large diesel 4x4, van, or anything above roughly 3.0L diesel — TOPDON's own 6.0L diesel claim is optimistic against this unit's 550A/2s rating, so step up to a heavier-duty unit rated for bigger engines instead.

Who it's for: Drivers with larger engines or frequent breakdown-cover-style use who want CTEK's build quality and 2-year warranty, not just a cheap booster.

The RB 4000's headline 4000A is a marketing peak figure — the real-world number is the 2060A maximum cranking current, still a credible step up from CTEK's own RB 3000. It's expensive for a lithium jump pack, so it earns its price on engineering and warranty rather than the badge number; like any lithium pack, store it indoors rather than in a hot car boot or a freezing shed.

  • Genuine reverse-polarity and spark-proof protection from an established 12V specialist (CTEK), not just a marketing claim
  • Doubles as a real power bank (USB-A QC3.0 + USB-C PD30W) and 3-mode LED torch
  • 2-year warranty and UK support/spares via CTEK's own store
  • It costs 3-4x a NOCO or GOOLOO booster with broadly similar real cranking output
  • CTEK doesn't publish a litre-based engine limit, so buyers must judge fit from the 2060A cranking figure rather than a simple 'fits my car' claim

Don't buy if Don't buy this if you only want an occasional emergency booster for a small petrol car — a NOCO GB40 or GB70 does the same job for a third of the price. The RB 4000 makes sense for larger diesels, frequent use, or if CTEK's warranty and support matter to you.

Who it's for: Drivers who want a compact, well-made jump starter that doubles as a genuinely useful USB power bank and torch, and are happy to pay a premium for CTEK's build quality and safety protections.

A solidly engineered, compact booster with proper reverse-polarity and spark-proof protection, but CTEK charges a premium versus rivals and — unusually for this category — doesn't publish an engine-litre coverage figure, so you're working from amp numbers alone.

  • Reverse-polarity protection and spark-proof technology built in
  • Doubles as a genuinely useful USB-A/USB-C power bank (16,000mAh/59.2Wh) with a 3-mode LED torch
  • Compact, IP65-rated build with a 2-year warranty
  • No published engine-litre (petrol/diesel) coverage figure — CTEK quotes only current (1300A start, 1980A max cranking), making it harder to size against your vehicle than rivals that state '9.0L petrol/7.0L diesel'-style claims
  • Noticeably pricier than similarly-rated 3000A boosters (e.g. NOCO Boost GB150, ~£206)

Don't buy if you want an on-the-box litre-engine guarantee for a large diesel van or 4x4 — CTEK doesn't publish one, so cross-check the 1980A max cranking figure against your vehicle first, or consider a rival that states a litre rating directly. Also don't leave it in a hot car in direct summer sun, and recharge it every six months or so if it's sitting unused — like any lithium pack, heat and long dormancy both degrade the cells.

AstroAI B8 Car Jump Starter Power Pack

4.2

Who it's for: A light, pocket-sized boot spare for petrol cars and most diesels — not for large diesel 4x4s or vans.

A compact, keenly priced pack that covers the vast majority of UK cars, with sensible reverse-polarity protection built in. Treat the peak-amp figure as a marketing number rather than a tested rating and judge it on engine-size coverage and reviews instead.

  • Very light at 329g and small enough for a glovebox
  • Covers up to 7.0L petrol and 5.5L diesel — enough for nearly all UK cars
  • Reverse-polarity protection, plus nine other built-in safety cut-outs (including overcurrent, overcharge and short-circuit protection)
  • Doubles as a USB power bank and 3-mode LED light (torch/SOS/strobe)
  • AstroAI doesn't publish battery capacity (mAh) on the UK listing, making it hard to compare against rivals on paper
  • No air compressor — AstroAI's newer MF16 model adds one for £49.99

Don't buy if Don't buy this if you drive a large diesel van, 4x4 or pickup over roughly 5.5L — step up to a higher-rated pack instead. And like any lithium jump starter, don't leave it in a hot car through summer; keep it somewhere temperate.

Ring RJS020 1000A Lithium Jump Starter + Type A & C USB Charger

4.2

Who it's for: Family cars, small vans and hybrids up to 5.0L petrol or 2.0L diesel that want a compact glovebox jump starter with a genuine safety pedigree.

A solid mid-range pick from a long-established UK brand — the safety engineering (audible and visible reverse-polarity, anti-spike and short-circuit warnings) is more reassuring than the headline amp figure. Treat the 1000A rating as a marketing peak, not a cranking-amp spec, and buy on the stated engine coverage instead.

  • Ringtelligence protection gives audible and visible warnings for reverse polarity, anti-spike and short-circuit faults, not just a silent cut-out
  • Boost function will attempt a start on a fully depleted (not just flat) battery, where cheaper units refuse
  • Doubles as a genuinely useful power bank — USB-C PD30W plus USB-A quick charge, 2-hour recharge, built-in LED torch, carry case and both cables included
  • The '1000A' figure is Ring's peak/marketing number, not a true cranking-amp rating — buy on the 5.0L petrol / 2.0L diesel coverage claim, and size up to the 1500A or 2000A Ultraboost for bigger diesels or SUVs
  • 8,000mAh is on the small side next to rival lithium packs at this price, so it needs charging more often if used regularly

Don't buy if Don't buy this size if your vehicle is over 2.0L diesel, a large SUV or a 4x4 — step up to Ring's 1500A or 2000A Ultraboost. And whichever size you buy, don't leave a lithium jump starter in the car on a hot day — bring it indoors in summer, as heat degrades the cell.

GOOLOO GP2000 2000A Jump Starter

4.1

Who it's for: Petrol cars, motorbikes and smaller diesels — a glovebox or boot standby rather than a workshop tool.

A genuinely useful, pocket-sized glovebox unit at a fair price, but treat both headline numbers with caution: the 2000A figure is a marketing peak, not a true cranking-amp rating, and GOOLOO's quoted 8.0L petrol/6.0L diesel coverage is generic marketing copy too — the identical figure appears on GOOLOO's own 1500A model, so it isn't a genuine per-model claim. Size your expectations to roughly 3.0L petrol/2.0L diesel for reliable cold starts, treating anything larger as best-effort. The 10-stage protection (including reverse-polarity) is a genuine safety plus for a budget unit.

  • Real reverse-polarity and short-circuit protection alongside 8 other safeguards — rare thoroughness at this price
  • Doubles as a USB power bank (5V/9V/12V quick-charge) with a bright 400-lumen LED torch, so it earns its space in the boot between jump-starts
  • Small and light (544g / ~1.2lb class), easy to keep charged and stowed permanently in the car
  • The '2000A' figure is a peak/marketing number, and GOOLOO's quoted 8.0L petrol/6.0L diesel coverage is generic marketing copy too (the same figure covers their 1500A model) — size your expectations to roughly 3.0L petrol/2.0L diesel for reliable starts instead
  • No digital display for charge level or clamp voltage, so you're relying on a basic LED indicator

Don't buy if Don't buy this if you drive anything larger than a small-to-mid petrol car or a light diesel — GOOLOO's 8.0L petrol/6.0L diesel coverage claim is generic marketing copy (the same figure appears on their 1500A model), so treat starts beyond roughly 3.0L petrol/2.0L diesel as best-effort rather than guaranteed. And don't leave it on a hot dashboard or parcel shelf in summer: GOOLOO rates storage only to 60°C, which a sunny UK cabin can exceed — keep it in the boot footwell or bring it indoors, and top up the charge every six months rather than relying on the 24-month standby claim.

Who it's for: Trade users, farms and fleet operators who need one AGM booster that covers cars through to vans, tractors and excavators on both 12V and 24V, with 24V HGV starts handled as an assist rather than a guaranteed solo crank.

This is a proper trade-grade AGM jump-starter, not a pocket power bank — at around 17.6kg net (20.6kg boxed) it's built to crank vans, tractors and plant as well as cars. The headline 3000A is a peak figure; SIP's own quoted cranking rate is a more honest 1200A (12V) / 600A (24V) — solid for this class, though on 24V that's best treated as an HGV-start assist rather than a guaranteed solo crank.

  • Dual 22Ah AGM batteries with a realistic, SIP-quoted cranking rate rather than just an inflated peak-amp number
  • Genuine 12V and 24V coverage — vans, tractors and excavators, not just cars
  • Reverse-polarity alarm and automatic circuit overload protection, in a rugged steel case
  • Heavy and bulky at 17.6kg net (20.6kg boxed) — not something to casually keep in a hatchback boot
  • AGM cells need recharging roughly every 3 months when not in regular use, so it wants a bit more upkeep than a sealed lithium pack

Don't buy if Don't buy this if you just want a light glovebox jump-starter for occasional car use — it's a heavy trade unit built for fleet/plant duty; a 2-3kg lithium pocket pack will be cheaper, easier to store and plenty for a single car.

GOOLOO GP4000 4000A Peak Jump Starter

4.0

Who it's for: Households with one larger vehicle (a big petrol saloon, an SUV, a van or a diesel with decent-sized engine) who want a single jump starter with headroom rather than cutting it fine on a smaller unit.

A well-specified jump starter with sensible safety features and dependable real-world engine coverage for the vast majority of UK vehicles, currently discounted to a price that undercuts most rivals in its bracket. Treat the 4000A peak-amp and 10.0L diesel figures as manufacturer marketing rather than literal ratings — independent testing suggests comfortably up to around 6.0L petrol and 3.0L diesel — and store it indoors rather than in a hot car.

  • Comfortably starts petrol engines up to around 6.0L and diesel up to around 3.0L in real-world testing — enough headroom for the vast majority of UK cars, vans and campervans
  • 10-layer protection circuitry with reverse-polarity indication and spark-proof clamps reduces the risk of a mis-clamped jump going wrong
  • Discloses a 24,000mAh (about 89Wh) battery, comfortably under the 100Wh airline hand-luggage limit, and doubles as a USB-A/USB-C power bank with a built-in torch
  • The 4000A peak-amp and 10.0L diesel figures on the box are marketing numbers, not cranking-amp ratings — independent testing suggests real-world coverage closer to 6.0L petrol / 3.0L diesel
  • GOOLOO's own product page advertises a '100W' power bank mode that the port ratings don't support — actual output tops out at around 15W, so don't expect fast laptop charging

Don't buy if Don't buy this if you only run a small hatchback or motorbike — a cheaper, smaller-capacity jump starter will do the job and take up less glovebox space; and don't buy any lithium jump starter if you have nowhere frost-free and cool to store it, since GOOLOO's own guidance (like other lithium packs) is to keep it out of a hot car in summer and a freezing one in winter.

Ring Automotive RJS030 1500A Lithium Jump Starter + Type A & C USB Charger

4.0

Who it's for: Drivers who want a compact lithium jump-starter that doubles as a genuinely fast USB-C power bank for phones and laptops.

Ring rates the RJS030 for cars and vans up to 6.0-litre petrol or 3.0-litre diesel, with reverse-polarity, anti-spike and short-circuit protection plus spark-free clamps that suit typical home use. Its Ultraboost button can also kick-start batteries as flat as 0.7V. It's a capable, sensibly priced unit, but treat the 1500A figure as a marketing peak — Ring's own spec sheet gives 350A as the real starting-amps figure — and keep the lithium cell out of a hot car boot in summer.

  • Wide rated engine coverage (up to 6.0L petrol / 3.0L diesel) for a compact unit
  • 60W USB-C PD output fast-charges phones and laptops, plus an Ultraboost button that can jump-start batteries as flat as 0.7V
  • Reverse-polarity, anti-spike and short-circuit protection with spark-free clamp design for safer home use
  • 1500A is Ring's peak/marketing figure — the manufacturer's own spec sheet puts the actual starting-amps rating at a more modest 350A
  • No third-party lab test data published to confirm the claimed engine coverage

Don't buy if Don't buy this if you plan to leave it in the car all year round — like all lithium jump-starters, it shouldn't sit in a hot boot or glovebox through summer; keep it indoors at room temperature between uses, and check its charge periodically.

Who it's for: Households or drivers already on the Milwaukee M18 battery platform who want a compact, no-maintenance jump starter that's ready year-round.

A genuinely capable capacitor-based jump starter that shrugs off cold and skips the trickle-charging faff of lead-acid units, but the £280 price is for the bare tool — factor in an M18 battery and charger before you commit.

  • Ready instantly with no pre-charge or maintenance, unlike lead-acid jump packs that self-discharge over winter
  • Reverse-polarity, spark-proof and overheat protection built in
  • Rated to -18C, so it works in the cold snaps when cars are most likely to fail
  • Sold as a bare unit — no M18 battery, charger or case included, which pushes the real cost well past £280 if you're starting from scratch
  • 2,000 peak-amp marketing figure is not a cranking-amp rating; treat the 8.1L petrol / 3.0L diesel coverage claim as the honest guide to what it can actually start

Don't buy if you don't already own M18 batteries and just want a simple grab-and-go jump starter — a self-contained lithium jump pack with its own built-in battery will be cheaper and simpler for occasional, one-off use.

Who it's for: Households with a car or van who want one unit that jump-starts, inflates tyres and lights the driveway, not just the cheapest way to start a flat battery.

A well-specced 4-in-1 — jump starter, 130PSI compressor, floodlight and a UK mains AC outlet — but it sits at the premium end of the category. The 1500A figure on the box is Nebo's own quoted peak, not a sustained rating; 600A is what it can hold for up to 3 seconds. Judge engine coverage on the conservative 6.0L petrol / 3.0L diesel figure rather than the 8L some retailers quote for this same model — listings disagree, so treat the higher numbers with caution.

  • 4-in-1 design (jump starter, 130PSI compressor, floodlight and a UK 3-pin AC mains outlet) means one item in the boot instead of four
  • Bi-directional USB-C Power Delivery means it can charge a phone or laptop, or be charged itself from the same port, and works as a power bank in a pinch
  • Diesel coverage to around 3.0L, petrol to 6.0L on the conservative figure — enough for most UK family cars and 4x4s — with spark-proof jumper cables and reverse-polarity protection built in
  • At £189.99 you're paying for the compressor, floodlight and AC outlet bundled in — if you only want jump-starting, cheaper single-purpose units do that one job for a lot less
  • The AC mains outlet is for very low-draw devices only — Nebo and B&Q quote different maximum wattages for it, and even the higher figure would drain the 55.5Wh battery in well under an hour, so don't rely on it as meaningful backup power

Don't buy if you only need a basic once-a-year jump starter for a small car — a simpler unit under £60 does that single job without paying for a compressor, light and AC outlet you may never use. Nebo specifies a 0–45°C operating range, so don't leave it in a hot car boot over summer or a freezing unheated garage over winter — keep it somewhere temperate.

NOCO Boost GB20: 500A UltraSafe Jump Starter Power Pack

3.9

Who it's for: A single petrol car, motorbike, ride-on mower or similar small-to-mid petrol engine — a glovebox-sized backup rather than a whole-household solution.

NOCO's GB20 is a compact, well-engineered lithium jump-starter with genuine safety features — spark-proof clamps and reverse-polarity protection — at a fair price. It's rated for petrol engines up to 4.0 litres only, and like all lithium packs it shouldn't be left baking in a hot car through summer; keep it indoors and bring it out when needed.

  • Reverse-polarity protection and spark-proof clamps make it hard to connect the wrong way round
  • Compact and light (0.95kg bare unit) enough to live permanently in a glovebox or boot bag
  • Also works as a phone charger and a genuinely useful 100-lumen torch with SOS/strobe modes
  • NOCO rates diesel as Not Recommended for this model — petrol engines up to 4.0L only
  • USB output caps at 2.1A, fine for a phone but slow for a tablet

Don't buy if Don't buy this one if your household car is diesel, or a large petrol engine over 4.0L — step up to NOCO's GB40 (6.0L petrol/3.0L diesel) or GB70 instead.

CTEK CS FREE 12V Portable Battery Charger, 4-in-1 Charger Power Bank, Jump Starter Alternative With Adaptive Booster

3.9

Who it's for: Drivers who want a genuinely safe, charger-based alternative to a jump starter — not an instant fix, but a gentler way to revive a flat 12V battery — and don't mind waiting for it.

The CS FREE isn't a jump starter — it's a charger-based alternative that revives a flat 12V battery by topping it up rather than delivering a direct crank current, so it's best read as the adjacent 'maintainer-first' pick in this guide rather than a head-to-head jump-starter winner. It skips the inflated peak-amp claims common on cheap jump packs and instead publishes honest output figures (20A/240W). CTEK's own figure of about 15 minutes gets the engine started, but that's a boost-to-start time only — independent UK testing (Parkers) found a full recovery to healthy battery condition took around 8 hours. It's gentler on modern vehicle electronics, and it doubles as a USB-C/USB-A power bank. As with any lithium pack, keep it indoors rather than in a hot car boot over summer.

  • No inflated peak-amp marketing — CTEK states real, honest output (20A/240W) rather than a headline crank-amp number
  • Charge-based Adaptive Boost is gentler on sensitive vehicle electronics than a direct high-current jump
  • Doubles as a USB-C/USB-A power bank for phones and laptops, and is solar-chargeable
  • Around double the price of typical lithium jump starters with similar real-world capability
  • The 15-minute figure is a boost-to-start time only — independent UK testing found a full recovery to healthy battery condition took around 8 hours, and the same review noted the clamps don't grip terminals as tightly as a traditional jump-start clamp

Don't buy if Don't buy this if you need an instant roadside jump start — the CS FREE is a charger-based alternative, not a traditional jump starter: it needs its own pack charged, takes about 15 minutes just to get the engine going, and independent testing found a full recovery to healthy battery condition took around 8 hours. Jump leads and a neighbour's car (or a traditional direct-boost jump pack) will get you moving faster.

AstroAI P10 Car Jump Starter Power Pack

3.8

Who it's for: A glovebox emergency pack for a small-to-medium petrol car or run-around, doubling as a phone power bank and torch.

A genuinely compact, well-priced pack with solid basic safety protections — but the 10.0L petrol/8.0L diesel coverage claim is a headline marketing figure, not a working spec: for a 37Wh pack, reliable coverage is closer to petrol engines up to about 3.0L and small diesels up to about 2.5L. For its size and price this is a sensible small-car backup, not a unit to rely on for a large diesel 4x4 or van.

  • Small enough to actually keep in the car permanently
  • Doubles as a USB-C/USB-A power bank and 3-mode LED torch
  • Reverse-polarity protection plus a wider 10-point safety system
  • Peak-amp and engine-coverage figures are optimistic for the battery size — don't expect it to reliably start a large diesel
  • Single small lithium cell means fewer repeat starts than a bulkier unit if the first attempt fails

Don't buy if You drive a large diesel engine, a van, or a 4x4 — step up to a higher-capacity pack. Also don't leave this (or any lithium jump starter) sitting in a car during hot summer weather: AstroAI's own manual caps charging at 45°C and operation at 50°C, both easily exceeded inside a parked UK car in summer, so store it indoors and bring it out when needed.

The honest bit: the amp number on the box is marketing
Start with the number this category is sold on. Nearly every pack advertises "peak amps", and it is not a figure you can buy on: it describes a momentary surge, not sustained cranking output, and it is not comparable between brands. Where manufacturers publish both, the gap is stark — TOPDON's own spec sheet qualifies its 2500A unit as 550A sustained for two seconds, Ring quotes 250A of actual output on its 1000A pack, and NOCO's long-running GB150 was re-rated from 4000A to 3000A, with the old figure still circulating on retailer listings. GOOLOO prints identical engine coverage on its 1500A and 2000A models. Compare on stated engine coverage instead — "up to 6.0L petrol / 3.0L diesel", say — and treat amp headlines as decoration. Next, when not to buy. A jump starter gets you going; it does not fix whatever flattened the battery, so if yours goes flat repeatedly, spend the money on a garage diagnosis first. Nor is bigger better: most cars on a British driveway are covered by a £50–£100 unit, and the largest packs here are rated for engines no household car has — they are van, motorhome and trade tools. Finally, two safety points that outrank everything above: buy a pack with reverse-polarity protection (every unit on this page carries it in some form), and never leave a lithium pack in a hot parked car — manufacturers' own charging limits stop at 40–45°C, and a cabin in summer sun can go past that.

Where we've bought and used a product ourselves we say so on its review; where we haven't, our verdict is a considered spec-and-evidence comparison, not a hands-on test — and commissions never change a ranking either way. Common questions

What size jump starter do I need for a UK car?

Smaller than the marketing suggests. Typical UK family cars run 1.0–2.0L petrol or 1.5–2.0L diesel engines, which sit comfortably inside mid-range packs like the NOCO GB40 (rated to 6.0L petrol / 3.0L diesel) or Ring's RJS030 (6.0L petrol / 3.0L diesel). Check your engine size in the V5C — it is listed as cylinder capacity in cc under vehicle details — or in the handbook, then buy the pack whose stated coverage clears it with a little headroom, because cold weather and an ageing battery both eat into real-world performance. The largest units here, rated for 8–10L engines, exist for vans, motorhomes and trade fleets, not household cars; where a pocket-sized budget pack prints a figure that large, it is marketing rather than capability.

Are the peak-amp figures on jump starters accurate?

Treat them as marketing rather than measurement. "Peak amps" describes a momentary surge, not sustained cranking output, and the figures are not comparable between brands. Where honest numbers exist, the gap is large: TOPDON's own spec sheet qualifies its 2500A rating as 550A sustained for two seconds, Ring publishes 250A of actual output for its 1000A pack, and Nebo's own UK spec sheet sets the Ultimate's 1500A peak against 600A held for three seconds. Every one of those is the manufacturer's own published figure, sitting underneath its own headline. This page therefore compares on each manufacturer's stated engine coverage, which is the figure that actually predicts whether your car will start.

Is it safe to leave a jump starter in the car?

Not through summer, if it is lithium — which almost all of these are. Manufacturers' own limits are the reason: NOCO specifies charging between 0°C and 40°C, AstroAI caps charging at 45°C and operation at 50°C, and the cabin of a car parked in direct summer sun can exceed those figures. Sustained heat also shortens a lithium cell's life. The sensible pattern is to store the pack charged, indoors, and put it in the car for winter journeys, when a flat battery is most likely. Two units sit outside that rule: the AGM lead-acid SIP, which prefers to live topped up on charge rather than in a hot boot, and Milwaukee's M18 tool, which has no internal battery at all — there the guidance applies to the slot-in packs instead.

Will a jump starter start a diesel?

Yes, if it is rated for one — diesel coverage is always lower than petrol on the same pack, because a compression-ignition engine takes more effort to turn over. NOCO's GB40 covers diesels to 3.0L, its GB70 to 6.0L, and the entry-level GB20 is rated by NOCO as Not Recommended for diesel altogether. Be warier of budget claims: GOOLOO prints the same 8.0L petrol / 6.0L diesel coverage on two differently rated models, so treat roughly 2.0L diesel as the honest expectation from a budget pack. Cold mornings sit at the hard end of the job, so keep headroom.

Can jump-starting damage my car's electronics?

The packs here are engineered to make mistakes hard rather than catastrophic. Every unit on this page carries reverse-polarity protection — connect NOCO's clamps the wrong way round and the unit shows an error light and refuses to deliver current — and spark-proof clamp designs are standard; Ring adds audible as well as visible warnings, and its RJS030 is rated for start/stop vehicles. The one different case is the trade-grade SIP, which sounds an alarm on a reversed connection rather than cutting the current, so it demands more care. Whatever you buy, follow the connection sequence in your car's handbook, and use the dedicated jump-start terminal if your engine bay has one.

Can I take a jump starter on a plane?

Usually, in hand luggage only — and the rules tightened in 2026. The Civil Aviation Authority treats a jump starter as a power bank: cabin baggage only, never the hold, with packs up to 100Wh allowed without airline approval. Under CAA rules in force since 27 March 2026 you may also carry no more than two per person, each individually protected against short circuits; you must not recharge one in flight, and you should not use it to charge anything else on board. Airlines may ask you to keep it in the seat pocket rather than the overhead locker so it stays reachable. Most units here clear the watt-hour bar — the NOCO GB40 is 24Wh, the TOPDON JS2000 Pro 59.2Wh, and the GOOLOO GP4000's 24,000mAh works out around 89Wh. The NOCO GBX155 squeaks under at 99Wh, while the VTOMAN V-Truck's 133.6Wh falls into the 100–160Wh band that needs the airline's approval. Confirm with your airline before you fly.

How often does a jump starter need recharging?

Top the pack up every three to six months, and always after a use — lithium units self-discharge slowly even when idle. Some hold charge well: CTEK quotes up to six months' retention on the RB 3000, and GOOLOO claims 24 months of standby, but a pack you reach for on a freezing morning needs to be full rather than merely alive, so a calendar reminder is cheap insurance. Recharge speeds vary usefully — NOCO's GBX55 refills in about 1.2 hours over 60W USB-C and is jump-ready in five minutes, while the GB40 takes about three hours from a 10W input. Cell lifespan is finite too: CTEK rates its RB packs at 500 charge cycles, which for emergency use means many years.
