Our review
A jump starter with no battery of its own: Milwaukee's M18 JS2000 stores its charge in capacitors fed from whichever M18 tool battery you clip on, and is ready to crank in under 70 seconds. There is nothing to keep topped up, which is the whole point. It suits households and tradespeople already running M18 tools; for everyone else a self-contained lithium pack is the simpler buy.
What it is, and why capacitors
Most packs on our jump starter page hold their energy in a built-in battery that slowly drains and must be stored within a temperature window. The JS2000 has no such battery. Clip on an M18 battery, press the button, and Milwaukee says it is ready to jump in under 70 seconds, delivering up to 2,000 peak amps from its internal capacitors, enough by Milwaukee's rating for petrol engines to 8.1L and diesels to 3.0L. The capacitors are rated for up to 500,000 cycles, and Milwaukee quotes up to 50 jump starts from one 5.0Ah M18 battery. The diesel figure is the one to notice: 3.0L is modest next to the 6.0L NOCO gives its own 2,000A packs, and it is Milwaukee's own number.
In a British winter
The appeal is readiness. A lithium pack left in a car since last winter may be flat on the morning it is needed; an M18 battery lives on its charger in the house or van and this tool draws from it on demand, so the only upkeep is the battery's own. Milwaukee rates the tool to operate from -20°C to +50°C, and a digital display shows the vehicle battery's voltage, a reading worth noting before you crank. With an M18 5.0Ah battery fitted, Milwaukee's EPTA weight is 3.4kg, so it is a boot tool rather than a glovebox one. The housing is impact-resistant and rated IP65, excluding the battery. How it compares
The NOCO Boost X GBX75 is the self-contained alternative: 2,500A peak, 8.5L petrol and 6.5L diesel, a 74Wh battery, 1.71kg, and a 1.7-hour recharge over USB-C. The CTEK RB 3000 is lighter still at 1.028kg and publishes a 1,980A cranking figure. Both need recharging every few months; the Milwaukee does not. The trade-off is the 3.0L diesel ceiling and the fact that the price is for a bare tool, so an M18 battery and charger are extra unless you own them.
Living with it
The box holds the tool alone: no battery, no charger, no case. It works with all M18 batteries, so an existing drill battery will do, and a 500-lumen four-mode task light and a USB-C port for charging a phone are built in. Milwaukee's standard guarantee is one year; eligible power tools can be extended to three years (1+2) if registered online within 30 days of buying from an authorised distributor, and eligible REDLITHIUM batteries to two. There are no consumables beyond the battery's own ageing, and no charging routine to forget.
Safety
Spark-proof clamps, reverse-polarity protection and overheat protection are built in. Never attempt a frozen or visibly damaged battery, and if the car's battery keeps going flat, book a garage or fit a maintenance charger rather than keep cranking.
Our verdict
Buy it if you already own M18 batteries and want a jump starter that is ready every winter without a charging routine, especially for petrol vehicles. Skip it if you drive a diesel over three litres, which Milwaukee does not rate it for, or if you would be buying a battery and charger just to run it; a NOCO GBX75 or GB70 needs no separate battery, weighs less and is rated for larger diesels.
