The 622GW is the dash cam we'd point most people at if the budget stretches: 4K resolution that makes plates readable, image stabilisation, GPS speed and location on the file, and emergency SOS. A dash cam doesn't stop a theft — it wins the aftermath: claims, disputes and vandalism incidents get settled by footage.

Our review
Nextbase's top single-lens dash cam records the road ahead in 4K at 30 frames a second, stamps each clip with speed, position and a what3words square, and shows it on a 3-inch touchscreen. The fact that decides it is power: parked-car recording only works on a permanently live feed, so it suits drivers who want the clearest driving footage and will either hardwire it or do without parked cover.
What the numbers mean
4K is 3,840 by 2,160 pixels, four times the detail of 1080p, enough to keep a number plate legible when you pause the clip. Nextbase also offers 1440p at 60 frames a second and 1080p at 120 for slow motion, and the f1.3 lens covers 140 degrees. One footnote matters: Nextbase says its image stabilisation uses 2K resolution, so you pick the smoothest footage or the sharpest, not both. GPS refreshes ten times a second from two satellite systems, so speed and position on the file are precise enough to argue with.
On the road
What3words runs offline inside the camera and gives a three-metre square to read to a breakdown or emergency operator on an unlit lane. Emergency SOS detects a crash and, if nobody moves afterwards, works through your paired phone to send location, heading and any medical details you have entered to the emergency services. Extreme Weather Mode sharpens fog and mist. For a knock in a car park, Intelligent Parking Mode wakes the camera on impact, saves a protected 45-second clip and stays awake about five minutes in case of another. It records from the impact onward, not the seconds before, the design difference between this camera and the VIOFO A229 Plus Duo.
Parking mode needs wiring
The supplied cable runs from the 12V socket, which on most cars dies with the ignition. Nextbase's support pages say parking mode needs a permanently live feed, from its Series 2 hardwire kit on a permanent-live fuse or its OBD hardwire kit, and that a switched fuse disables it. The hardwire kit's cut-off stops drawing power when the car battery falls to 11.2V, but Nextbase also says its cameras are not designed for continuous day-and-night running and advises unplugging before a long gap in driving. The internal lithium battery exists to close files cleanly: Nextbase quotes 10 to 15 minutes for its Series 2 models, 1 to 3 with a rear module.
How it compares
The VIOFO A229 Plus Duo trades 4K for 2K at 60 frames a second but adds a 2K rear camera, a buffered parking mode that keeps 15 seconds before an event, a supercapacitor instead of a lithium cell and an 18-month warranty. The Nextbase iQ 4K matches the 4K front and adds a cabin camera and a 4G link that messages your phone, but those alerts need a subscription from £69.99 a year. On our dash cam comparison, Garmin's X210 records 1440p and can run Parking Guard from its internal battery or a cable.
Living with it
The box holds the Click&Go PRO GPS mount, a fitting tool, a spare adhesive pad, a USB cable and the car power cable, and no memory card. Nextbase recommends a U3 microSD card for 4K and says 64GB holds roughly four hours. It talks to the free MyNextbase Connect app over dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. DashCamTalk's spec table gives 94 by 53 by 45mm and an operating range of -20°C to 45°C, so lift it off the glass on a hot afternoon. The UK warranty is 12 months, return to base; Nextbase says it can reach 36 months through the free Road Safety Club for Series 2 cameras, a paid extension bought within 28 days, or its Protect subscription. For a change-of-mind return within 28 days of a direct purchase, Nextbase supplies the returns label.
Our verdict
Choose the 622GW when the footage is the worry and the parking is not: a motorway commute, a rural road with no witnesses, a car that sleeps on a drive. It gives you 4K, GPS, what3words and crash alerts with no monthly fee. Look elsewhere if you want to know what happened to the car overnight on the street, because that means a hardwire kit here and the clip still starts at the bump; the VIOFO keeps the seconds before for the same wiring job. For proof the lights were green, a 1080p camera from the comparison will do.

You just want basic journey cover — a 1080p cam does that for a third of the price.

Does the Nextbase 622GW record while parked?
Only with constant power. Nextbase says parking mode needs its hardwire kit on a permanently live fuse or its OBD hardwire kit; the supplied 12V cable dies with the ignition on most cars. An impact then wakes the camera to save a protected 45-second clip, recorded from that moment, not before.
