Petzl Actik review

Petzl Actik 450 lm Head Torch (AAA)

By Tom Calder

Our verdict · Researched
4.4 / 5

The current Actik is Petzl's hybrid design: it ships with three AAA cells and can also take the separate CORE rechargeable pack. Petzl says it gives 450 lumens on its top level and about 100 hours on the lowest, with a red light for keeping night vision. For a household kit it suits anyone who wants spare cells that store for years rather than a battery that must be kept charged. It is lighter and brighter than the Ledlenser H3.2 on the maker's figures, and unlike the Silva Seek 420 it comes with cells in the box.

What we like

  • Takes standard AAA cells, so spares can sit in a drawer for years and be swapped in a blackout
  • Petzl says the lowest level lasts around 100 hours, enough for several nights of low-level use
  • Red continuous and strobe modes sit on the same single button
  • Petzl gives the lamp a 5-year guarantee

Worth knowing

  • Petzl rates it IPX4, so it copes with rain but is not built for immersion
  • The 450 lm top level lasts only about 2 hours on the maker's figures
  • The rechargeable CORE pack is a separate purchase

Our review

The current Petzl Actik is a 98g head torch that runs on three AAA cells out of the box and will also take Petzl's CORE rechargeable pack. Petzl rates it at 450 lumens to the ANSI/PLATO FL1 standard, with a mixed wide-and-focused beam, a red mode and a five-year guarantee.

Why AAA still makes sense at home

A rechargeable torch is only useful if it was charged before the lights went out. An Actik with a sealed packet of lithium or alkaline AAAs beside it will work after a year in a drawer, and a fresh set takes seconds to fit. Petzl calls this its Hybrid concept: run it on shop-bought cells, then add a CORE pack later if you use it often. It accepts alkaline, lithium or NiMH rechargeable AAAs.

Petzl's figures

On three AAAs, Petzl's table gives three white levels: Max Burn Time at 7 lumens, 10 metres and 100 hours; Standard at 100 lumens, 60 metres and 10 hours with 20 hours of reserve lighting after that; and Max Power at 450 lumens, 100 metres and 2 hours. Red is 2 lumens for 60 hours, and the strobe is visible at 700 metres for 400 hours. With the CORE pack the top level rises to 625 lumens and Standard drops to 7 hours.

These are ANSI/PLATO FL1 numbers, which measure brightness at switch-on and burn time until output falls to 10% of the starting level. In practice the 100-lumen Standard setting is the one you will use for cooking, reading or moving around the house, and ten hours of it covers a long evening twice over.

Build and limits

It weighs 98g with batteries, carries a CE mark and is rated IPX4, which means splashes and rain but not submersion. A single button cycles the levels, and the beam mixes a wide flood for close work with a focused centre for seeing further. It is made in France, and Petzl replaced the headband design for the 2025 models, so spares are easy to get. The main limit is the short two hours at full power, so save Max Power for moments when you need to see a long way.

How it compares

The Petzl Tikka is the same family at 350 lumens and 94g with a flood-only beam; it gives slightly longer burn times on Standard and costs less, so choose the Actik only if you want the extra reach. On the head torch page, the Ledlenser H3.2 is heavier and much dimmer, the Silva Seek 420 is similar but ships without cells, and the Black Diamond Spot 400 is lighter at 77g in our data. The rechargeable Ledlenser HF4R Core suits someone who will keep it topped up.

Our verdict

A sensible, well-supported AAA head torch for a household kit or the car, with enough brightness for outdoor jobs and a long low mode for the house. Skip it if you want USB charging in the box or will use it in heavy rain or water; a fully rechargeable, higher-rated torch suits those jobs better.
