Sonik Xtractor 2-Rod Carp Kit review

What is in the box, and which version you are buying

The kit on the listing we track is Sonik's original Xtractor two-rod outfit: two 9ft rods with a 2.75lb test curve, two Xtractor 5000 freespool reels and a 42in VaderX landing net. Sonik's own catalogue has since moved on. For 2026 it lists the kit as the Xtractor+ 2 Rod Carp Kit, built from the newer Xtractor+ rods and reels with an Xtractor 42in net, in 9ft 2.75lb and 3lb versions and 10ft versions from 3lb to 3.5lb. Sonik's kit page does not name which Xtractor+ reel goes in the box, and Sonik sells both a standard and a freespool Xtractor+ reel, so the figures below are Sonik's published numbers for the current Xtractor+ parts, not a description of the older outfit.

What the numbers mean

A test curve is the weight that bends the rod tip to a right angle, so 2.75lb is a rod that flexes early and protects a hook-hold at close range, where 3.5lb is a stiffer casting tool. Sonik's 9ft 2.75lb Xtractor+ rod is a C6 carbon blank weighing 209g that packs to 113cm, with a 40mm butt ring and a 17mm reel seat. A 9ft rod is easier under trees and in a car boot than a 12ft one and gives up distance in return.

Freespool means a second, lighter drag at the back of the reel. A carp picks up the bait and pulls line against gentle resistance instead of dragging the rod in; a turn of the handle brings the main drag back. Sonik's current freespool reel in this size, the Xtractor+ FS 5000, has 3+1 bearings, a 5.1:1 gear ratio, 280m of 0.30mm line on the standard spool and a deeper spare spool, and weighs 411g. The Xtractor+ 42in net has 95cm-deep mesh with a soft base, a two-piece carbon handle that twist-locks between 1.2m and 1.8m, a forged aluminium spreader block and a 127cm packed length.

On the bank

Anyone aged 13 or over needs an Environment Agency rod licence to fish freshwater in England and Wales. The gov.uk prices are £36.80 a year for up to two rods and £55.30 a year for up to three, with a one-day licence at £7.30 a day and an eight-day option; it is free for 13 to 16 year olds. Two rods is what this kit gives you, so the standard licence covers it. The fishery's own rules then decide rod limits, hook types and whether nets need dipping.

The kit stops at rods, reels and net. You still need bank sticks or a pod, bite indication, an unhooking mat, end tackle, and line if the reels arrive empty, which Sonik's page does not say.

How it compares

The NGT Profiler combo on our fishing kit page is one 5ft telescopic rod that packs to about 40cm: the right first rod for a canal or a child, not a carp outfit. The Shimano Baitrunner ST RB is the classic single-reel upgrade in a 6000 size when a bundled reel starts to feel rough, and Sonik's Xtractor+ FS is the house equivalent. NGT's 42in net comes with a 1.8m handle, where the Xtractor+ net's twist-lock handle adjusts between 1.2m and 1.8m.

Living with it

Sonik's UK warranty is 12 months from purchase, covers defects rather than wear or misuse, and needs no registration. Claims go through the retailer with proof of purchase; Sonik asks that nothing is posted to it directly without that step. Rinse the reels after a wet session and let the 95cm mesh dry open rather than folded damp in a bag.

Our verdict

Buy it if you have outgrown a single rod on a local lake and want a matched two-rod setup from a tackle-shop brand without choosing each part yourself. Buy the 10ft 3lb or heavier version instead if your water needs longer casts or has snags that call for a stiffer rod. Skip it if you fish twice a year, or if rivers and barbel are the goal: Sonik makes a separate Xtractor+ Specialist Barbel rod for that.
