PreparedBritain's weekly fuel bulletin: the national picture from Fuel Finder, the statutory scheme every UK forecourt reports to, as read on the morning of 24 September 2026.
- Petrol (E10) averages 173.4p a litre across the 7,570 forecourts reporting a petrol price to Fuel Finder, and diesel (B7) 198.0p across the 7,750 reporting diesel: £95.37 and £108.90 for a 55-litre tank.
- Measured on our retailer-file series (2,356 forecourts in the price files of Asda, Esso, Motor Fuel Group, SGN Retail and Moto), diesel has risen 3.4p a litre over seven days, from 195.1p on 17 September to 198.5p on 24 September, and petrol has risen 1.8p (172.0p to 173.8p); that series runs a little above Fuel Finder's, and the Fuel Finder series began on 24 September 2026, so it has no week to compare yet.
- Diesel is £2 or more a litre at 1,212 of the 7,750 forecourts reporting a diesel price (15.6%).
- Motorway services: diesel averages 212.9p at motorway forecourts against 197.7p elsewhere, 15.2p a litre or about £8 on a 55-litre tank; petrol 191.8p against 173.1p, 18.7p or about £10 a tank. The split is 167 motorway forecourts and 7,717 others among the 7,884 in the data, each mean over those with the grade.
- Supermarkets: diesel averages 194.8p at supermarket forecourts against 198.8p at other forecourts off the motorway, 4.0p a litre or about £2 a tank; petrol 170.6p against 174.1p, 3.5p or about £2 a tank. The split is 2,259 supermarket forecourts (eight of them at motorway services) and 5,466 others off the motorway among the 7,884 in the data, each mean over those with the grade.
By nation, across the 6,590 forecourts whose nation is on record (the feed's country field is blank or unrecognised for the other 1,294):
- England: petrol 173.5p, diesel 198.1p (5,000 forecourts)
- Scotland: petrol 174.5p, diesel 199.1p (642 forecourts)
- Wales: petrol 172.8p, diesel 197.9p (399 forecourts)
- Northern Ireland: petrol 167.5p, diesel 193.2p (549 forecourts)

The bigger difference for most drivers is between forecourts a few miles apart: motorway services average about £8 a tank more than the rest for diesel, and supermarkets about £2 a tank less, so a look at the price before pulling in is worth a few pounds."
