Mountain Warehouse Microlite 950 Sleeping Bag review
By Tom Calder
A budget-friendly 3-season synthetic bag that offers reasonable warmth and easy care for the price. It is a practical home-standby or car-camping bag rather than a lightweight or genuine winter option.
- Best for
- An affordable, machine-washable synthetic bag to keep in a home grab-bag or car for cool-weather standby.
- Skip it if
- You need a genuine lightweight backpacking bag or reliable sub-zero winter warmth

What we like
- Low cost and widely available in the UK, so easy to buy a spare or two for a household kit
- Synthetic microfibre fill keeps insulating even if it gets damp and is machine washable
- Left/right-hand zip versions can be joined into a double, useful for a family kit
Worth knowing
- At around 1.4kg and bulky when packed, it is heavy for backpacking and better suited to the car or a cupboard
- The comfort rating is optimistic — many users find it sleeps cooler than the label, so add a liner for colder nights

Our review
The Microlite 950 is Mountain Warehouse's cheap synthetic sleeping bag, rated to the European standard with a comfort temperature around 5°C. It is a bag for a cupboard, a car boot or a spare-room guest, and for sleeping in a cold house when the heating is off, rather than a bag for carrying up a mountain.
What it is
Mountain Warehouse lists the fill, shell and lining as 100% polyester, a weight of about 1.4kg and a packed size of roughly 17 by 43cm. It describes the bag as mid-season and says it complies with EN ISO 23537-1, the standard that produces the comfort, limit and extreme figures on sleeping bag labels. The UK page gives a comfort rating of 5°C and a limit of 0°C, although Mountain Warehouse's own pages for this range do not all agree on the figures, so read the label on the bag you receive. There is also a Square XL version, which is a different, roomier and heavier bag.
What the ratings mean
Under EN ISO 23537, the comfort temperature is the one at which a standard woman sleeps without feeling cold, and the limit is the one at which a standard man can sleep curled up without waking from cold. The extreme figure, where given, is a survival number, not a sleeping one. A comfort rating of 5°C is plenty for an unheated British bedroom in a winter cut, which rarely falls below about 10°C indoors, and for spring and autumn camping. It is not a bag for a frosty night in a tent. People who sleep cold should add a liner or a blanket over the top.
Where it fits in a household plan
A sleeping bag is one of the cheapest ways to stay warm through a long winter outage, because it traps the heat of the person rather than warming a room. Synthetic fill keeps insulating when damp and shrugs off being stored for years in a cupboard, which down does not. At 1.4kg and the size of a small rucksack when packed, the Microlite is too bulky for a grab bag but right for the car, the loft or a spare room. Our keep warm without heating guide explains how to layer bags, blankets and clothing in a cold house.
How it compares
On the sleeping bags page the Snugpak Softie 9 Hawk is the warmer, better-made choice for genuinely cold nights, with a comfort rating well below freezing and a smaller pack, at several times the outlay. The Snugpak Jungle Bag is lighter and packs far smaller but suits summer and the milder half of the year. The Microlite's case is cost: at its price you can buy one per family member and keep them in the car, which is harder to justify with either Snugpak.
Our verdict
Buy it as a low-cost standby bag for the car, the spare room or a winter power cut, one for each person in the house, and add a blanket over the top for anyone who feels the cold. Mountain Warehouse's UK page does not state a guarantee beyond its returns policy, so check at purchase. Skip it if you need a bag for backpacking, where its weight and bulk count against it, or for sub-zero nights, where its ratings are not enough. It was out of stock at the time of writing.

Who shouldn't buy this
Don't buy this if you need a genuine lightweight backpacking bag or reliable sub-zero winter warmth — this is a value standby bag, not a technical cold-weather one.

How warm is the Mountain Warehouse Microlite 950?
Mountain Warehouse rates it under EN ISO 23537-1 with a comfort temperature of 5°C and a limit of 0°C, though its pages do not all agree, so check the label. It suits an unheated house or a spring or autumn tent, not frost.
Is the Microlite 950 synthetic or down?
Synthetic. The fill, shell and lining are all polyester, which keeps insulating when damp and stores well for years.
How big is it packed?
Mountain Warehouse gives about 17 by 43cm and a weight of 1.4kg, so it suits a car boot or cupboard rather than a grab bag.
What does EN ISO 23537 mean on a sleeping bag?
It is the European test standard behind the comfort, limit and extreme temperatures on the label. The comfort figure is the one to plan around; the extreme figure is a survival rating, not a sleeping one.
