Reliance Aqua-Pak 19L review

Reliance Aqua-Pak 19L (5 Gallon) Water Container

By Tom Calder

Our verdict · Researched
4.2 / 5

The Aqua-Tainer's smaller stablemate: a rigid, translucent 19-litre container whose spout detaches for storage. It stacks neatly, and at about 19kg full it is easier to shift than a 25-litre can.

What we like

  • Rigid and stackable, empty or full
  • Spout for pouring without a pump, detached for storage
  • Translucent, so you can see how much is left

Worth knowing

  • Holds less than a 25-litre jerry can
  • Translucent plastic lets light through, so store it somewhere dark

Our review

Reliance's Aqua-Pak is a rigid 20-litre water container with a hideaway spout that stacks two high when full. The maker lists it as food safe and free of BPA and PFAS, at under a kilogram empty. It is a keep-at-home store for a lost supply, since it weighs about 20kg filled.

What it is

Reliance's page lists the Aqua-Pak at 20 litres, about 29 by 23 by 39cm, and 1.93lb empty, which is under 900g. The spout folds into the cap for storage and pulls out for pouring, so there is no separate tap to lose, and Reliance says filled containers stack two high. It describes the plastic as food safe, BPA and PFAS free, LFGB certified and FDA compliant, though it does not name the polymer on the page. UK listings round the capacity to 19 litres, which is where our name for it comes from.

How much water to keep

The government's Be Ready advice for a water supply interruption is three litres of drinking water per person per day for three days, with more for cooking and washing, so one Aqua-Pak covers two people's drinking water for the three days, and a family of four wants two or three. Fill it from the tap, cap it, and store it somewhere cool and dark; our guide to storing emergency water covers how long tap water keeps and when to refresh it. The translucent wall lets you see the level, but also lets light in, so a cupboard beats a windowsill.

Label each container with the date you filled it, and empty it into the garden or the washing machine when you refresh it rather than pouring it away. Two containers let you rotate: one in use for the kettle, one full in the cupboard.

Limits

At about 20kg full it is a two-handed lift and not a carry, so it stays where you fill it; for fetching water from a bowser or a neighbour, a smaller folding carrier is easier. The spout pours slowly compared with a proper tap, which suits filling a kettle more than a bucket. Reliance is a Canadian brand and its UK supply runs through importers, so check that the listing is the current Aqua-Pak with the hideaway spout rather than an older design.

Check the cap seal with a tilt after filling, before it goes in the cupboard, because a slow drip under the stairs goes unnoticed for weeks.

How it compares

On our water storage comparison the six-pack of 25-litre jerry cans stores far more per pound for a household that has the floor space, and the Enduramaxx 300-litre tank is the garden-scale answer. The Aqua-Pak sits between them: easier to pour from than a jerry can, lighter to move than anything bigger, and neat enough to live under the stairs.

Our verdict

Buy one or two if you want stored drinking water you can pour straight into a kettle, kept in a cupboard and refreshed a few times a year. Skip it if you need to carry water any distance, or if you want bulk storage for washing and flushing as well, where jerry cans or a tank give more litres for the money.

Questions

How much does a full Reliance Aqua-Pak weigh?

About 20kg, since it holds 20 litres and weighs under 900g empty. It is a lift, not a carry, so fill it where it will be stored.

Is the Reliance Aqua-Pak safe for drinking water?

Reliance lists it as food safe, BPA and PFAS free, LFGB certified and FDA compliant. Rinse it before first use and store it away from light.

How many Aqua-Paks does a family need?

The government's Be Ready advice is three litres of drinking water per person per day for three days. One 20-litre container covers two people; a family of four wants two or three.

Can Reliance Aqua-Paks be stacked?

Yes. Reliance says they stack two high when full. Put the stack on a solid floor, since two full containers weigh about 40kg.
