TROBOLO WandaGO review

TROBOLO WandaGO Composting Toilet

By Tom Calder

Our verdict · Researched
4.3 / 5

A compact separating toilet: urine goes to one container and solids to another, which is what keeps the smell down without water or chemicals. The adjustable seat height and close-fitting lid make it easier to live with than most portable loos. Like any composting toilet it's a routine, not an appliance: in use, the urine container needs emptying every day or two.

Our review

The TROBOLO WandaGO is a separating toilet: urine runs to one container at the front, solids drop into a lined container behind, and a scoop of natural litter does the rest. There is no water, no chemical fluid and, kept properly, very little smell. It weighs 4.2 kg, so it moves from shed to campervan to bathroom without fuss.

What it is

TROBOLO gives the closed size as 314 mm high, 382 mm deep and 341 mm wide, a weight of 4.2 kg and a tested load capacity of 150 kg. The seat height adjusts from 30.6 to 43.6 cm, so it can sit close to a normal toilet height. The body is polypropylene, which the maker describes as weatherproof and easy to clean.

The solids container holds 6.5 litres, which TROBOLO rates at 8 to 12 uses, and the liquids container 4.6 litres, rated at 10 to 20 uses. A roll of small inlays lines the solids container, and TROBOLO's FAQ suggests about 250 ml of natural litter over each deposit. Toilet paper goes in the solids side too.

How it works day to day

Separation is what stops the smell: urine and solids kept apart do not produce the odour of a bucket or a poorly maintained chemical toilet. The urine diverter clicks out of the lid so that both containers lift out and empty separately. TROBOLO suggests emptying the solids every five to ten days and gives no fixed interval for liquids, though in a busy household the urine container is the one that fills first.

The maker says it must stand on completely flat ground for the separation to work, which matters in a tent or on a sloping garden-room floor.

Disposal in the UK

TROBOLO's own guidance is that the solids, wrapped in their inlay, go in household waste in the same way as used nappies, and that urine goes down a normal toilet or, diluted with water, onto the garden as fertiliser. If you plan to use it for longer than a short outage, check with your council how it wants sanitary waste bagged.

When the taps go off, every flush uses water you may need for drinking and washing. Our guide to having no water supply covers what your water company owes you and how to manage meanwhile. The WandaGO is for the times when flushing is not possible, or water is too precious to spend on it.

How it compares

On the emergency toilets comparison the Trelino Evo M is another separating toilet built for permanent installs in vans and cabins. The Thetford Porta Potti 335 is a chemical cassette toilet with a piston flush rated at about 27 uses, needing fluid and a disposal point. A bucket toilet with a lid and gelling bags is far cheaper and fine for a few days. The WandaGO sits between: more civilised than a bucket, simpler than a cassette.

Our verdict

Buy it if you want a toilet that can serve a long outage, a campervan and a garden office, with nothing to buy except litter and inlays. Skip it if you only need cover for a day or two without water: a bucket toilet with bags costs a fraction as much. If the thought of emptying a container of solids is a deal-breaker, a cassette toilet is the more familiar routine.

Who shouldn't buy this

You only need cover for a short water outage; a bucket toilet with gelling bags costs far less. If you'd rather not handle waste at all, a cassette toilet with chemical fluid is the more familiar routine.

Questions

Does the TROBOLO WandaGO smell?

Separating urine from solids is what controls the smell, along with covering each use with natural litter. Empty the containers on schedule and keep the lid closed.

How often do you empty a TROBOLO WandaGO?

TROBOLO suggests emptying the solids container every five to ten days. The 4.6-litre urine container is rated for 10 to 20 uses, so it needs emptying more often.

Can you put composting toilet waste in the bin in the UK?

TROBOLO says the bagged solids can go in household waste like used nappies. For anything beyond a short outage, check how your council wants it bagged.

How heavy is the TROBOLO WandaGO?

TROBOLO gives 4.2 kg, with a tested load capacity of 150 kg and an adjustable seat height of 30.6 to 43.6 cm.
