NiteSafe Duo-Lux review

Xtralite NiteSafe Duo-Lux (XL20710)

By Tom Calder

Our verdict · Researched
4.2 / 5

The Duo-Lux is Xtralite's flagship in this range, with a five-LED torch that the maker says gives up to eight hours in power-failure mode. It has two night-light settings, either motion sensor or dusk-to-dawn plus motion. Longer runtime makes it more useful for an evening-long cut than the smaller Duo.

Our review

The NiteSafe Duo-Lux is a plug-in motion-sensor night light whose top section lifts out as a rechargeable five-LED torch. When the mains fails, the torch switches itself on, and Xtralite says it runs for up to eight hours, enough to see a household through most evening power cuts on the landing or stairs.

How it works

The unit plugs into a wall socket. Its front has a six-LED night light that, by default, comes on when it senses movement in the dark, and a second setting keeps a faint dusk-to-dawn glow that brightens with movement. Xtralite gives about 1 lumen for the glow and about 20 lumens on motion, with a sensor range of up to 4 metres across roughly 100 degrees and a delay of about 20 seconds before it dims.

The top is a torch that charges by induction while it sits in the cradle. When the cradle stops detecting mains power, the torch's five LEDs switch on at a low setting. Lift it out and press the side button once for full brightness. Xtralite's manual describes a 500mAh lithium-ion battery and says the torch must be charged for 24 hours before first use.

What it does well

It needs no thought. In a cut at night, the landing lights up by itself, so nobody gropes for a torch on the stairs, and you can then carry the light to the fuse box or a child's bedroom. Up to eight hours in power-failure mode is the longest of the Duo-style units on our list. It is useful for older relatives, for whom a fall on dark stairs is the real risk in a power cut.

The limits

Xtralite says neither the night light nor the motion sensing can be switched off on this model, so if you only want an emergency light, its NiteSafe Maxi suits better. It works only if the torch is charged, seated correctly and the socket is switched on, and the maker advises against plugging it into an extension lead, because the power-failure light might not trigger. The manual says it is not watertight and should not be used in damp places, so keep it out of bathrooms. The maker gives a one-year warranty. We could not confirm a torch brightness figure on Xtralite's own page.

How it compares

On the power cut lights page, the plain NiteSafe Duo is smaller and cheaper but gives about two hours. The NiteSafe Torch has no night light and lasts about three hours in a cut. The NiteSafe Maxi is the one for a whole night: Xtralite gives up to 12 hours on its low power-cut setting and a much brighter torch on high. The Auraglow and Safe T Light units are similar ideas with shorter runtimes. For a full set-up, pair one of these on the stairs with a head torch per person; our power cut preparation guide covers the rest.

Our verdict

A good always-on night light for a landing or hallway that turns into a long-running emergency light without anyone touching it. Skip it if you dislike a night light that cannot be switched off, or only want a light for outages; the Maxi or the NiteSafe Torch fits better.

Questions

Does the Xtralite NiteSafe Duo-Lux come on automatically in a power cut?

Yes. When the cradle no longer detects mains power, the torch's top LEDs switch on at a low setting. Lift it out and press the side button for full brightness.

How long does the Duo-Lux last in a power cut?

Xtralite says up to eight hours from the top LEDs when the torch is fully charged. Charge it for 24 hours before first use, as the manual says.

Can I turn off the night light on the Duo-Lux?

No. Xtralite says this model's night light and sensor are always active and points to the NiteSafe Maxi for a power-failure-only light.

Can I plug the Duo-Lux into an extension lead?

Xtralite advises against it, because the power-failure light might not switch on. Plug it straight into a wall socket and leave the socket switched on.
