Ambrosia Deluxe Rice review

Ambrosia Deluxe Rice Pudding

By Tom Calder

Our verdict · Researched
4.4 / 5

The most filling tin here that its maker says you can eat cold: 480 kcal a can, with no heating needed. It's a pudding rather than a meal, but a few in the cupboard make a no-cook store go a lot further.

Our review

Ambrosia Deluxe is the creamier version of the familiar tinned rice pudding, made with full cream milk and a little cream. Each 400g can gives 480 kcal across two servings, which makes it one of the most energy-dense tins in a store cupboard, and an easy one to rotate if your household already eats it.

What is in the can

Ambrosia lists full cream milk, rice (9%), sugar, whey, cream (3.5%), skimmed milk, salt, vanilla extract and natural flavouring, with milk making up 77% of the recipe. It is suitable for vegetarians and milk is the declared allergen. Per 100g it gives 120 kcal, 4.5g of fat (2.8g saturated), 16.4g of carbohydrate (9.6g sugars), 3.3g of protein and 0.20g of salt. Ambrosia counts a can as two 200g servings at 240 kcal each, so a whole can is 480 kcal and about 13g of protein.

Why it earns a place in a store

Stored food only works if it gets eaten and replaced, and a pudding most people already like gets rotated. Its calories are high for a tin of this size, it needs no water to prepare, and the ring-pull means no tin opener. It also adds something comforting to a cold-weather store: a warm sweet bowl late in a long day without power does a lot for morale, particularly with children.

Heating and storage

Ambrosia's directions are to warm it gently on the hob, stirring and not letting it boil, or to microwave it at 800W for a minute, stir and give it another minute. Its product page gives warming directions only, so if you plan to eat it cold in a power cut, check the wording on your cans. Unopened cans keep in a cool, dry place. Once opened, the maker says to tip it out of the can, refrigerate it and eat it within three days, which matters when the fridge is off: open one only when it will be finished at one sitting. Our power cut food safety guide covers the fridge side.

How it compares

On the tinned food page, only Stagg's chilli beats it for calories per can, and that needs heating. Grant's Irish Stew gives 310 kcal of meat, potato and veg; Heinz Baked Beanz give 336 kcal with more fibre; John West sardines give protein and oily fish with no cooking. Rice pudding is a dessert and short on protein, fibre and vitamins, so it belongs alongside those, not instead of them. Our how much food to store guide helps balance a cupboard.

Dates

The can carries a best-before date. GOV.UK explains that best-before dates are about quality, while use-by dates are about safety; food past its best-before is usually still safe if the can is undamaged, though it may not be at its best. Do not eat from a can that is swollen, leaking or badly dented. Our use-by vs best-before guide has more.

Our verdict

A sensible high-calorie, easy-to-rotate tin for a household that already likes rice pudding. Skip it if someone in the house is allergic to milk or simply will not eat it, because a tin nobody wants just sits there until it is thrown out.

Who shouldn't buy this

Don't buy it if anyone at home has a milk allergy, or nobody eats rice pudding now: tins nobody wants don't get rotated.
