Cleanwaste GO Anywhere Toilet Bags (Wag Bags) review
By Tom Calder
The self-contained answer to going to the toilet when the mains are down: a NASA-developed gel locks waste solid for odour-free, spill-proof storage until you can bin it. Trusted by the US military and disaster agencies, it is about as foolproof as this category gets, though the per-bag cost mounts up in prolonged use.

- A proven, no-plumbing loo solution for flats, vehicles and grab bags when the water or power is off.
- Skip it if
- You have a garden or the space for a simple twin-bucket or bucket-and-liner system, where bin bags…

What we like
- Genuinely proven, not a novelty: over 10 million kits used by the US military and FEMA since 1999.
- The Poo Powder gelling agent turns liquid waste solid and controls odour, so storage and transport stay hygienic and spill-proof.
- Fully self-contained: each kit includes the gel-loaded waste bag, a puncture-resistant zip-close disposal bag, toilet paper and a hand wipe, and the waste is landfill-approved. Each bag handles several uses before it needs sealing.
Worth knowing
- Cost per use is high next to a DIY bucket-liner-and-cat-litter setup, and UK packs carry an import premium.
- Waste still goes to landfill rather than composting, and a larger pack takes up cupboard space.

Our review
Cleanwaste's GO Anywhere Toilet Kit, the original wag bag, is a waste bag pre-loaded with a gelling powder that turns liquid waste solid and controls odour, with a puncture-resistant zip-close outer bag, toilet paper and a hand wipe in each kit. It fits a bucket, a portable toilet seat or a toilet that will not flush. It is the tidiest answer to a drain or water failure in a flat, at a cost per use that mounts up.
What is in a kit
Cleanwaste lists four parts: a waste bag pre-loaded with its Poo Powder gelling and deodorising agent, a secure zip-close outer bag that resists punctures, a wad of toilet paper, and a hand wipe. Each kit gels up to 32 US fluid ounces of waste, about 0.95 litres, which Cleanwaste says is 40 per cent more than rival products, and it describes a kit as good for multiple uses. The bags can be used on the ground, in a bucket, in any portable toilet seat or over a non-working toilet bowl. They are made in the USA and carry US military stock numbers, which is the provenance behind the brand's reputation.
Using them at home
If the water or the drains fail, the GOV.UK public health advice written for a national power outage is blunt: you will not be able to flush the toilet, do not try to, collect waste in plastic bags, seal them and dispose of them with normal household waste, ideally in an outside bin. A wag bag is that plastic bag with the gel and the second bag already sorted. Line the toilet bowl or a bucket with the waste bag, use it until the gel has done its work, seal it in the outer bag and bin it. The same advice says to wash hands in a bowl of water with soap or household disinfectant; the wipe in the kit covers you until you can.
Cleanwaste says to dispose of used kits in the rubbish. We found no UK guidance specific to gelled waste beyond the general instruction above, so follow your council's rules and keep sealed bags in an outside bin until collection. Our guide on what to do with no water supply covers the rest of the house.
Limits
Cleanwaste publishes no shelf life, so date the box and keep it dry. A kit is a pouch, not a seat: for comfort pair it with a bucket toilet or a folding seat. The per-use cost is many times that of a bin liner and cat litter, which is why they suit a flat, a car or a grab bag where there is no garden to dig and no room for a bucket system, rather than a week of family use.
How they compare
On our emergency toilets page, a bucket toilet with a seat is the cheap frame these bags go in. The Thetford Porta Potti 565P is a flushing cassette toilet with a sealed tank for a longer outage, and the Trelino Evo M separates liquids and solids with no chemicals. Wag bags are the lightest and least to store, and the only one of these that works over your own toilet bowl.
Our verdict
The proven, no-mess way to deal with the one job nobody plans for, in the least space. Buy a pack for a flat, a car or a grab bag, and a bucket seat to go with it if you have room. Skip it as a long-term solution for a house with a garden, where a bucket, liners and cat litter do the same for far less per use.

Who shouldn't buy this
You have a garden or the space for a simple twin-bucket or bucket-and-liner system, where bin bags and cat litter do much the same job for a fraction of the per-use cost. These kits earn their keep for flats, cars and grab bags where compactness and zero mess matter most, not as an everyday high-volume solution.

Questions
How many uses does one wag bag give?
Cleanwaste says each kit gels up to 32 US fluid ounces, about 0.95 litres, and is good for multiple uses. Seal it once the gel is saturated or it has been open a day.
Can I use a wag bag over my own toilet?
Yes. Cleanwaste says the bag fits non-working toilets as well as buckets and portable seats. Put the seat down over the bag edges to hold it.
How do I dispose of a used wag bag in the UK?
Seal the inner bag in the zip-close outer bag and put it with normal household waste, ideally in an outside bin, which is the GOV.UK advice for bagged waste when toilets cannot be flushed. Never put it down a drain.
Do wag bags have a shelf life?
Cleanwaste does not publish one. Keep the box dry and cool and date it when you buy it.
