Doulton HIP Trio System review

What is in the box and what each chamber does

The HIP Trio is a wall-mounted head with three screw-off sumps, roughly 29 by 32 by 10 cm, feeding its own drinking tap. Doulton's recommended order for this bundle is the limescale cartridge (9A04) in sump one, the fluoride cartridge (9B04) in sump two and the Biotect Ultra (2501) candle in sump three. The system is WRAS certified and tested by NSF International to NSF/ANSI 372 for low lead.

The Biotect Ultra earns the certifications: a ceramic shell rated at 0.9 micron absolute around an activated carbon core. Doulton's test data shows greater than 99.99% removal of bacteria and of Cryptosporidium and Giardia cysts, 99.5% lead, 95.5% free chlorine and greater than 99.9% microplastics, to the NSF/ANSI 42, 53 and 401 protocols, tested in its single-candle housings. Doulton rates it at 1.9 litres a minute and 2,300 litres or six months, whichever comes first.

The limescale and fluoride cartridges

Doulton is careful in describing the two pre-filters. The limescale cartridge, it says, reduces build-up and the chalky taste of hard water and helps protect appliances; it is not called a softener and no percentage is published. The fluoride cartridge is 'an option for those who would prefer to reduce the level', again without a reduction figure. Both are changed every three months, against six for the candle.

Whether the fluoride stage is worth having depends on your postcode. UKHSA's 2026 monitoring report says about one in ten people in England have fluoride added to their supply, and that about 85% lived in areas averaging below 0.4 mg per litre between 2017 and 2024. Your water company can tell you your own level.

Fitting it in a British kitchen

This bundle includes the pillar tap, so you will be cutting a hole in the worktop or sink unless one exists. Doulton's instructions list a drill, a tube cutter and a cross-head screwdriver, and ask for a 10 cm gap under the sumps; Doulton puts an average install at about an hour. UK law, it notes, requires an isolation valve and a non-return valve before the filter.

Check pressure first. The printed instructions give 20 psi (1.38 bar) minimum and 90 psi (6 bar) maximum, but Doulton's product page and test-data table point to 30 psi (2 bar) for TRIO housings, so plan on that; if a litre takes more than 12 seconds from your cold tap, Doulton says take advice before buying. Cold water only, up to 30°C. Commissioning is slow: ten minutes running, 24 hours standing, then ten minutes more.

In a power cut, and on a boil water notice

Nothing here needs electricity. As long as the mains holds pressure the Trio filters, so unlike the pumped reverse-osmosis units we review it keeps working through a power cut. It is not a licence to ignore a boil water notice: Doulton's instructions say not to use it on water that is microbiologically unsafe or of unknown quality without disinfection.

How it compares

Doulton's own Ecofast uses the same candle in a single inline housing: the same 2,300 litres and 1.9 litres a minute, under an hour to fit, but without the limescale and fluoride stages or a tap in the box. The BWT In-Line kit is the budget route, a carbon cartridge rated at 2,000 litres or six months, aimed at chlorine taste, odour and sediment. Living with it

The candle can be scrubbed with an abrasive kitchen pad under running water when flow drops. Consumables are the real commitment: at Doulton's intervals that is eight pre-filter cartridges and two candles a year, most of the spend going on the quarterly cartridges. Doulton offers a free five-year extended warranty on its domestic systems once you register the purchase online, and returns on its own store are 14 days.

Our verdict

Buy it if you want a permanent, British-made filter with real certification behind the microbiological claims, and you live in a fluoridated area or want scale inhibition at the tap without minding a quarterly cartridge routine. Skip it if your goal is softer water, if you rent, or if three cartridges' upkeep gives you pause; the Ecofast gets you the same candle for far less.

Does the Doulton HIP Trio remove limescale?

Not in the way a softener does. Doulton says the limescale cartridge reduces build-up and the chalky taste and helps protect appliances, but publishes no percentage and does not call it softening. The candle deliberately leaves minerals in.

Does the Doulton HIP Trio work in a power cut?

Yes. It runs on mains water pressure alone, with no pump or electrics, so it keeps filtering for as long as your supply flows. Follow any boil water notice regardless.
