Duronic Hurricane review
Duronic Hurricane Wind-Up and USB Rechargeable LED Torch and Lantern
By Tom Calder
A sensible all-rounder for a power cut: one unit is a handheld torch, a lantern for the table and a red warning light, charged from a USB cable day to day, with a crank for when the power is off. Duronic rates a full charge at up to 5.5 hours as a torch and 2.25 as a lantern. It isn't bright, at 32 lumens on the listing, and the crank is a top-up rather than a charger: the listing's own figure is about 15 minutes of torch light per minute of winding.
- Best for

What we like
- Torch, lantern and red emergency light in one, with a hook to hang it up
- Charges from a USB cable (stored in the handle) or the hand crank, so it can be topped up with the power off
- Up to 5.5 hours as a torch from a full charge, on Duronic's figures
Worth knowing
- Dim as a room light: the listing gives 32 lumens
- Winding is slow going: about 15 minutes of torch light, or 6 as a lantern, per minute of cranking on the listing's figures
- Not water resistant, per the listing, so it's an indoor and fair-weather light

Our review
Duronic's Hurricane is a three-in-one light for the power-cut drawer: a handheld torch, a 32-lumen lantern and a red flashing beacon, charged from a USB cable that stores in the handle or by winding the crank. Duronic rates a full charge at 5.5 hours as a torch, and a minute of winding buys about 15 minutes of torch light. It is dim as a room light, but it never needs batteries.
What it does
One button cycles the modes: Duronic says press once for the handheld torch, twice for the lantern, three times for the red emergency light and a fourth time to switch off. The lantern head gives 32 lumens, enough to read by at a table but not to light a room. Duronic does not publish a lumen figure for the torch beam. There is a hook for hanging it and it stands on its base, and a USB cable tucks away inside the handle for charging from any phone charger or power bank.
Duronic quotes a full charge as 5.5 hours of torch, 2 hours as a lantern (the page also says 2.25 hours in one place) and 30 hours in the red SOS mode. The maker also lists a USB output for emergency phone charging, with the caveat that it will not give a phone a full charge.
What the crank is for
Duronic's own figures for one minute of winding are 15 minutes of torch light, 6 minutes of lantern light or 2 hours of the red beacon. That makes the crank a way to find the fuse box or get to bed, not a way to run the lantern all evening. The sensible routine is to keep it charged by USB and treat the handle as the fallback once the power bank is flat. Our emergency kit list covers how a crank light fits alongside a battery torch.
What Duronic does not say
The product page gives no battery capacity, no weight, no water-resistance rating and no charge time over USB. Without an IP rating, treat it as an indoor light and keep it out of the rain, or use it under a porch rather than in the garden. The same goes for the crank: wind it steadily rather than fast, because the handle, not the battery, is the part most likely to fail on any crank light. It is also not a bright torch by modern standards, so it belongs beside a proper head torch rather than in place of one.
How it compares
On our torches and radios page, the Power Plus Shark is a simpler crank torch with no lantern mode, and the igadgitz Xtra adds a solar panel and a waterproof rating. For a room light the Ledlenser ML6 is many times brighter and runs far longer, but it has no crank, so it needs charging before the cut. The Hurricane's case is the lantern and beacon in one crank-backed unit.
Our verdict
A sensible, low-cost drawer light that can always be wound back to life, with a lantern mode the plain crank torches lack. Keep it charged by USB and expect the crank to buy minutes, not hours. Skip it if you want one light to brighten a whole room, or something for use outdoors in the wet.

Who shouldn't buy this
Don't buy it if you want one bright light for a whole room — a rechargeable lantern such as the Ledlenser ML6 is far brighter, though it has no crank.

Questions

Duronic quotes 5.5 hours as a torch, about 2 hours as a lantern and 30 hours in the red flashing mode from a full USB charge.
How much light does one minute of winding give?
Duronic's figures are 15 minutes of torch, 6 minutes of lantern or 2 hours of the red beacon per minute of cranking.
Can the Duronic Hurricane charge a phone?
Duronic lists an emergency phone-charging output but says it will not give a full charge. Treat it as enough for a short call, not a phone top-up.
