Ledlenser P6R Core Rechargeable Torch review

By Tom Calder

Our verdict · Researched
4.3 / 5

A genuinely well-made 900-lumen torch with an IP68 waterproof body, a focusable beam and a 7-year warranty, so it earns its place as the household emergency torch. You pay a premium over budget brands, but the build quality and long low-mode runtime justify it for something you want to rely on in a power cut.

What we like

  • Robust aircraft-grade aluminium body, IP68 waterproof and backed by a 7-year warranty
  • Sensible spread of modes with a very long 95-hour low setting - useful when you need light to last, not just to be bright
  • USB rechargeable, so no scrabbling for disposable batteries during an outage

Worth knowing

  • Noticeably pricier than capable budget torches that also hit 900+ lumens
  • Uses Ledlenser's proprietary magnetic charging contact rather than a standard USB-C port on the torch itself

Our review

Ledlenser's P6R Core is a 170g aluminium torch with a focusing head, a 900-lumen boost, an IP68 rating and a replaceable 18650 cell charged through a magnetic cable. Its strongest card for a power cut is the 15-lumen low mode, which Ledlenser rates for 95 hours. It is a long-term household torch, not a spare.

What Ledlenser publishes

Ledlenser's data sheet gives four outputs, measured to the ANSI FL1 standard: boost at 900 lumens, power at 600, mid at 240 and low at 15, with beam distances of 240, 190, 120 and 25 metres. It lists run times of 2, 6 and 95 hours, the longest on the lowest setting; boost is a short burst. The cell is a 3.7V, 2,500mAh 18650 lithium-ion, 9.25Wh, and Ledlenser states it is replaceable. It charges in the torch through a magnetic contact cable, in about five hours depending on the charger.

The torch is 151mm long, 158mm when focused, and weighs 170g with the cell. Ledlenser's Advanced Focus System slides the head from a wide flood to a narrow spot. It is rated IP68, dust-tight and watertight from 15cm to 1m for up to 30 minutes, rated by Ledlenser to survive a 2m drop, and works from -20 to 40°C. In the box are the cell, a wrist strap and the magnetic charging cable.

Using it in a power cut

The modes map neatly onto a blackout. Low at 15 lumens is enough to move around a house or read, and at 95 hours it would cover several nights. Mid lights a room when it is pointed at the ceiling. Boost is for checking a fuse box or the garden. A wide flood is easier on the eyes indoors than a tight spot. The government's Be Ready campaign says torches are safer than candles; our guide to candles in a power cut explains why. Keep it in the same place every time, so anyone in the house can find it in the dark.

Limits

The magnetic cable is the catch: lose it and you cannot charge the torch through the body, so keep it in the drawer with the torch, or buy a spare 18650 cell and an external charger. It is also more torch than many households need. A lithium cell keeps best part-charged, and our lithium battery guide covers safe charging. Ledlenser's data sheet gives a seven-year warranty with registration, so register it when you buy it. Charge it every few months even if unused, so it is full when the lights go out.

How it compares

On our torch and radio comparison the Fenix PD36R is far brighter, with USB-C charging built in, for a higher outlay. The Anker Bolder LC40 is a cheaper 400-lumen torch. A head torch such as the Petzl Tikka keeps both hands free, which many people prefer for cooking or caring for children in the dark. The P6R Core's case is its long low mode, its sealed body and the warranty.

Our verdict

Buy it if you want one well-built torch that will last many years and run for days on low in a long power cut. Skip it if you just need a cheap spare for each room, or want standard USB-C charging on the torch itself. Pair it with a head torch and see our power cut preparation guide.

Who shouldn't buy this

You just want a cheap spare for the grab bag or the most lumens per pound - a £15-25 torch will cover a basic blackout, and this is overkill if it will mostly sit unused.
