Ledlenser ML6 Warm Light review

Ledlenser ML6 Warm Light Rechargeable Lantern

By Tom Calder

Our verdict · Researched
4.3 / 5

A well-made lantern from a torch specialist, with a warm 750-lumen top setting that lights a whole room without the harsh blue cast of cheaper LEDs. Its power-bank output will give a phone a top-up in a long cut. There is no hand crank or solar panel, so charge it when a storm is forecast and keep it topped up.

What we like

  • Up to 750 lumens of warm white light, dimmable, plus a red light for night use
  • Works as a power bank, so it can top up a phone from its own battery
  • IP66 sealing and a warranty of up to seven years from a specialist torch brand

Worth knowing

  • No hand crank or solar input: once it's flat it needs mains, a car socket or a power bank
  • Charging a phone from it shortens the light you get from each charge

Our review

The ML6 Warm Light is Ledlenser's mid-sized rechargeable lantern: up to 750 lumens of warm-toned light, a red mode, IP66 sealing and a power-bank output. It is a good main light for a room in a power cut, with a long low setting for overnight. It needs charging from a socket or power bank, so it suits households that keep things topped up.

What it is

A cylindrical lantern, 178 mm tall and 42 mm across, weighing 280 g. Ledlenser lists three main levels, 750 lumens on Boost, 550 on Power and 5 on Low, with continuous dimming in between, plus a red light that is easier on the eyes at night. It runs from a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery, an 18650 cell according to retailer specifications, and it can top up a phone from that battery.

Ledlenser rates it IP66 against dust and powerful water jets, gives a 1.5 m drop rating and says it is usable from minus 20 to 40 degrees. The warranty runs to seven years if you register the lantern with Ledlenser.

In a power cut

Warm white is the point of this version. Light at the yellower end of the range is kinder in a living room than the stark blue-white of many cheap LEDs, and it is easier to read or eat by. Ledlenser's runtimes are 3.5 hours at 550 lumens and 200 hours on the 5-lumen Low, so a single charge covers several nights if you keep it low and turn it up only when you need to.

A lantern like this is also the safer alternative to candles, which fire services warn about during power cuts; our guide to candles in a power cut has the detail. Charge it as soon as a storm warning goes out, and keep a power bank to recharge it if the cut runs on.

The limits

There is no hand crank, no solar panel and no AA fallback, so a flat battery means finding a socket, a car charger or a power bank before it lights again. Every phone top-up takes light you would otherwise have later. Ledlenser gives no runtime for the 750-lumen Boost setting, so treat it as a short burst rather than a level to leave on.

Retailers repeat several different runtime and warranty figures for this lantern. We use Ledlenser's own: the 3.5-hour and 200-hour runtimes, and seven years on registration.

How it compares

On our lantern comparison, the Fenix CL28R is brighter at 2,000 lumens, with a much bigger 10,000 mAh battery and fast charging, at 376 g. The BioLite AlpenGlow 500 has a 6,400 mAh battery and quotes up to 200 hours on low, but only an IPX4 splash rating. Ledlenser's own ML4 is a 71 g mini lantern that can run on an AA cell, a better fit for a grab bag. Torches and wind-up lights are on the torches and radios page.

Our verdict

A well-built, pleasant-to-live-with room light from a specialist brand, and a good choice as the main lantern for a household that charges things before a storm. If you need a light that can be revived by hand when everything is flat, pair it with a wind-up torch or choose a lantern that takes spare batteries.

Who shouldn't buy this

You want a light you can recharge by hand with the grid down. A crank or solar lantern, or a torch that takes spare AA batteries, suits a long outage better.

Questions

How long does the Ledlenser ML6 Warm Light run?

Ledlenser quotes 3.5 hours at 550 lumens and 200 hours on the 5-lumen Low setting. It gives no runtime for the 750-lumen Boost.

Can the ML6 charge a phone?

Yes. It has a power-bank function that tops up a phone from its own battery, which shortens the light you get from that charge.

Is the Ledlenser ML6 waterproof?

Ledlenser rates it IP66, which means dust-tight and protected against powerful water jets. That covers heavy rain, but it isn't rated for submersion.

What warranty does the ML6 have?

Ledlenser offers up to seven years when you register the lantern with them. Retailers quote shorter terms, so register it when you buy.
