eneloop AA review
Panasonic eneloop AA Rechargeable Batteries (4-pack)
By Tom Calder
The reference low self-discharge AA. This European BK-3MCDE version is rated at a minimum of 2000 mAh on its datasheet (Panasonic's global page lists other regions at a 1900 mAh minimum), and Panasonic says eneloop keeps around 70% of its charge after ten years in storage, which is why people pick it for torches and radios that sit in a drawer. Alkaline cells are still the simpler choice for a kit you will not touch for years, so treat these as the option if you want to reuse cells and have a charger and a power source.
- Best for
- A kit that needs reusable AA cells you can top up once or twice a year and still trust.
- Skip it if
- You want a set-and-forget kit with nothing to charge

What we like
- Panasonic quotes slow self-discharge, so a charged cell is still useful months later
- Fits any standard NiMH charger
- Same AA size as alkaline, so it drops into torches and radios
Worth knowing
- Needs a charger and mains or USB power to refill, which a long outage may not provide
- Lower capacity than the eneloop pro line, so shorter runtime per charge in heavy-draw devices

Our review
Panasonic's eneloop AA, part number BK-3MCDE, is the standard low self-discharge rechargeable cell: a minimum 2,000 mAh at 1.2 V, made in Japan, and sold pre-charged. Panasonic's storage claim is that about 70% of a full charge is still there a decade later, which is the figure that matters for a torch or radio that sits in a drawer. It still needs a charger and somewhere to plug it in.
What it is
The distributor data sheet for the BK-3MCDE gives a nickel metal hydride cell with a minimum capacity of 2,000 mAh, a nominal 1.2 V, a weight of 28 g, charging from 0°C to 40°C and discharging from minus 20°C to 50°C, made in Japan. Panasonic's eneloop FAQ gives the retention claim: around 70% of a full charge remains after ten years in storage at 20°C, measured under IEC 61951-2. The four-pack contains cells only; the charger is separate.
On cycle life, Panasonic's FAQ explains that eneloop was rated at up to 2,100 charges under the 2011 version of the IEC test, and at approximately 600 under the stricter 2017 revision. Both describe the same cell. The honest reading is that it will outlast any household use, and that the bigger number is a test artefact.
Rechargeable or disposable for a kit
For a radio or torch that sits untouched, a lithium or alkaline cell is simpler: it holds its charge for years and needs nothing. Older NiMH cells lost a large part of their charge in a few months, which is why they had a poor name for emergency kit. eneloop's low self-discharge changes that: a set charged at the start of winter is still useful in spring, and Panasonic's own FAQ makes the point that eneloop is better suited to this than ordinary NiMH. Our power cut preparation guide suggests a split: rechargeables for the things you use every week, lithium cells for the sealed kit.
The dependency is the charger. In a long outage you need a USB charger and a power bank or a power station to refill them. If you have those, four eneloops replace hundreds of disposable cells over their life.
How it compares
On the rechargeable batteries page the eneloop pro AA holds about 2,500 mAh for high-drain devices, at the cost of faster self-discharge and fewer cycles, so it suits a camera flash more than a kit. Duracell's Recharge Ultra and Energizer's Recharge Power Plus are the mainstream rivals; Energizer's charger kit with four AAs is the easy way in if you own nothing yet. The eneloop AAA is the same chemistry at 800 mAh for remotes, head torches and small radios. For most households, standard eneloop AA plus a decent smart charger is the right first purchase.
Our verdict
Buy a pack for the AA devices you use weekly, and a charger that can run from USB. Skip them for the grab bag or the drawer radio you hope never to use, where lithium cells need no charger and no attention. Charge them when you put the clocks back, and again when they go forward, and they will be ready for the night the power goes.

Who shouldn't buy this
Don't buy it if you want a set-and-forget kit with nothing to charge; lithium or alkaline cells in the drawer are simpler.

How long do eneloop AA batteries hold their charge?
Panasonic's FAQ says around 70% of a full charge remains after ten years in storage at 20°C, tested under IEC 61951-2. In practice, charge them twice a year and they will be ready.
How many times can an eneloop be recharged?
Panasonic quotes up to 2,100 cycles under the 2011 IEC test method and approximately 600 under the 2017 revision. Either figure is far more than a household will use.
Do they work in any charger?
They are standard 1.2 V NiMH AA cells, so any NiMH charger will do. A smart charger that charges each cell independently is kinder to them than a cheap timer charger.
What is the capacity?
The BK-3MCDE data sheet gives a minimum of 2,000 mAh. Panasonic's global pages list other regional versions at a 1,900 mAh minimum.
