Energizer Vision HD+ review

Energizer Vision HD+ Head Torch (350 Lumens)

By Tom Calder

Our verdict · Researched
3.6 / 5

The updated version of Energizer's budget AAA head torch, with more output (350 lumens) and seven modes including smart dimming. Its real virtue in a power cut is unchanged: standard AAA batteries you can stockpile and swap by hand in the dark, with no built-in cell to find flat. Output and build are basic, which is fine for a backup.

What we like

  • Runs on standard AAA batteries you can keep spares of and swap by hand — nothing to recharge before a power cut
  • Seven modes, including spot, wide and smart dimming, with an 80-metre beam on high
  • IPX4 water resistance and a 1-metre drop rating cope with dog walks, loft rummaging and a wet evening

Worth knowing

  • 350 lumens and a basic build put it well behind rechargeable outdoor head torches on range and durability
  • Short runtime on high — the listing gives up to 4 hours in one place and 2 hours 45 minutes in another — so heavy use gets through cells

Our review

Energizer's Vision HD+ is a budget head torch that runs on three AAA batteries, puts out up to 350 lumens and throws a beam to 80 metres on high. Its real strength in a power cut is the simplest one: the batteries are standard cells you can buy anywhere and swap in the dark. It is a backup and household light rather than a hill-walking tool.

What it is

A plastic head torch with a fabric strap, powered by three AAA cells that come in the box. Energizer rates it at 350 lumens with an 80 m beam on high, IPX4 water resistance against splashing and a 1 m drop test. The UK page lists a red mode, high and low spotlight with floodlight, and high spotlight with low floodlight, with a dimmable switching option to adjust brightness.

Energizer's North American page for the same model gives up to 4 hours on high and 35 hours on a 45-lumen low setting with a 30 m beam. The UK page gives no runtime, and neither page gives a weight.

In a power cut

A head torch is the light you actually want when the power goes: both hands free to find the fuse box, light the stairs, cook on a camping stove outside or change a nappy. The Be Ready checklist asks for a torch and spare batteries, and that is exactly where AAA power helps. A rechargeable torch that was left flat in a drawer is useless at 9pm in a storm; a pack of AAA cells from the cupboard is not.

The red mode is useful at night, because it preserves your night vision and doesn't wake the rest of the house. Store the torch with the cells out, or check them every few months, so a leaking battery doesn't ruin it. Our guide to preparing for a power cut covers the rest of the kit.

The limits

Four hours on high from three AAA cells, on Energizer's figure, means heavy use gets through batteries quickly, and alkaline cells lose output in the cold. The build is basic and IPX4 is a splash rating, so it is fine for a wet garden but not for being dropped in a puddle. For long walks or regular night running, a regulated rechargeable head torch is a better tool.

Energizer's own pages describe the mode count differently from retailer listings, so go by the modes listed on the UK page rather than a headline number.

How it compares

On our head torch comparison, the Petzl Tikka (2025) is a similar 350-lumen AAA torch from a specialist, with Petzl's published runtimes of 2 hours at maximum and 110 hours at 7 lumens, and an optional rechargeable pack. Black Diamond's Astro 300 also runs on three AAA cells. If you prefer rechargeable, the Ledlenser HF4R charges over USB-C and weighs 72 g. The Energizer is the cheap, widely sold choice for a drawer or a car.

Our verdict

It is cheap enough to buy two: one for the kitchen drawer and one for the car or grab bag, each with a spare set of AAA cells. It does the household job well. If you walk in the hills at night or want long runtimes, spend more on a specialist torch.

Who shouldn't buy this

Don't buy it as your main light for serious hiking or long off-grid stints — a rechargeable head torch with a regulated high/low range and longer runtime is the better tool. This is a backup, not a performance light.
