Huel Black Edition review

Huel Black Edition Powder (17 meals)

By Tom Calder

Our verdict · Researched
3.8 / 5

A powdered complete meal: one serving shaken with water is 400 calories and 40g of protein by Huel's listing, and the bag holds 17 meals. It needs no cooking, which suits a power cut, but it does take water from your store, and the listing gives no shelf life, so it's a food to use and replace rather than one to put away for years.

Our review

Huel Black Edition is a 1.53 kg bag of meal powder that makes 17 servings of 400 kcal and 40 g of protein each when shaken with water. It is vegan and gluten-free, and there is nothing to cook, so it works with the hob off; it is also a food you must keep using, because Huel publishes no multi-year shelf life. Think of it as rotation food, not a store.

What is in a serving

Huel's UK nutrition page gives, per 90 g serving: 400 kcal, 40 g protein, 17 g fat, 17 g carbohydrate and 8.2 g fibre, with 26 vitamins and minerals. The bag is 1.53 kg, which works out at 17 servings. Huel's product page describes it as a complete meal shake, vegan and gluten-free, with no artificial sweeteners; the US page quotes slightly different figures and 27 vitamins and minerals, so use the UK page for a UK bag. Huel's preparation guidance is two scoops of about 45 g each with water; it gives no fixed volume of water, and most people use around 500 ml.

Huel does not publish a best-before period on its product pages. Its staff have said on its forum that bags are typically dated around a year from manufacture, but that is not an official figure, so read the date on the bag when it arrives.

Why it suits a power cut, and why it is not a store

Nothing to heat, nothing to open with a tin opener, and a meal with real protein in two minutes: that is useful on a dark evening with the hob off. Each meal takes water, though, which comes from the same store as your drinking water. Our guide to how much food to store counts that water in.

Huel's own page on using it for every meal says it is technically possible to live on Huel, and quotes its co-founder, a nutritionist, saying he would discourage it. For a few days of a power cut that is beside the point; for a long-term store it matters, because a bag dated a year out is not a 25-year food. Buy it if you will drink it for breakfast anyway and replace it as you go.

How it compares

On the emergency food page the Huel ready-to-drink bottles need no water at all, at 400 kcal a bottle, and are the better choice if your stored water is tight. The ReadyWise 60-serving bucket is the opposite kind of food: freeze-dried, dated for 25 years, and needing hot water to be pleasant. Expedition Foods pouches give 800 kcal a bag with a five-year date, and the Wayfayrer pouch is a cooked meal you can eat cold. Huel Black has the most protein per meal of the group and the shortest date.

Our verdict

Buy a bag if Huel is already part of your week, and keep it a bag ahead so there is always one unopened. Skip it as a food to seal away for years, where a freeze-dried bucket or 25-year food is made for the job, and skip it if your water store is small, where the ready-to-drink bottles make more sense.

Who shouldn't buy this

Don't buy it if you want food to put away for years: a freeze-dried bucket is made for that.

Questions

How many calories are in a serving of Huel Black Edition?

Huel's UK nutrition page gives 400 kcal, 40 g protein, 17 g fat, 17 g carbohydrate and 8.2 g fibre per 90 g serving.

How long does Huel Black Edition keep?

Huel publishes no shelf life on its product pages. Its staff have said on the Huel forum that bags are usually dated about a year ahead, so check the date on the bag and rotate it.

Does it need cooking or hot water?

No. Shake two scoops with cold water. That makes it useful in a power cut, though every meal uses water from your store.

Can I live on Huel in an emergency?

For a few days, yes, as part of what you have. Huel's own guidance says living on it alone is possible but not something its nutritionist co-founder would encourage.
