Hyundai HY3900Si review
Hyundai HY3900Si 3300W Petrol Inverter Generator
By Tom Calder
A 3kW continuous inverter generator that Hyundai lists at 21.15kg, lighter than the HY3250SEi already on this page but without electric start. Its only mains outlet is a 16A industrial blue socket, so ordinary 13A appliances need a suitable 16A-to-13A adaptor lead, and that connector suits caravan hook-up cables and some tools better than a household extension lead. The small 4-litre tank gives a stated 3.6 hours at half load, so a long outage means frequent, careful outdoor refuelling.
- Best for
- Households that want 3kW of inverter power in a lighter, recoil-start body and are happy to use a 16A connection.
- Skip it if
- You want electric start or several household sockets without an adaptor

What we like
- 3,000W continuous pure sine-wave output, about half as much again as the 2kW models on this page
- Hyundai lists 21.15kg, lighter than the 26.5kg HY3250SEi
- 16A blue socket suits caravan-style hook-up leads and higher-draw equipment
- 3-year home warranty from Hyundai
Worth knowing
- No 13A socket: standard appliances need a 16A-to-13A adaptor lead, which is an extra purchase
- Hyundai states 3.6 hours at 50% load from a 4-litre tank, so refuelling comes round quickly
- Recoil start only, and 63 dB(A) at 7m under half load is audible to neighbours

Our review
The HY3900Si is Hyundai UK's recoil-start 3kW inverter: 3,000W continuous, 3,300W peak, pure sine wave, from a 144cc four-stroke engine. It is lighter than the electric-start HY3250SEi, but its single 16A blue socket and 4-litre tank shape how you would use it in a long power cut, and it must only ever run outdoors.
Who it suits
A household that already understands petrol engines and wants enough output for a fridge-freezer, a kettle or a microwave (one at a time), a few lights and some chargers, with clean enough power for electronics. It also suits caravanners, because the blue 16A socket takes a standard hook-up lead. If you have never pulled a recoil cord or stored fuel, read our generator safety guide and our power station vs generator comparison first; a battery unit is simpler for most homes.
What Hyundai says it does
Hyundai's UK page lists 3,000W rated and 3,300W maximum output at 230V 50Hz, pure sine wave, with an ECO mode that lets the engine idle down at light load. There is one 16A industrial socket and a 12V car-style outlet. The engine is a 144cc air-cooled single cylinder with recoil start, the tank holds 4 litres of unleaded and the sump takes 400ml of SAE 10W-30 oil.
Hyundai gives 3.6 hours at half load (about 1.11 litres an hour) and 6.3 hours at 10% load. Noise is listed as 60 dB(A) at 7 metres at 10% load and 63 dB(A) at half load, with a marked sound power of 95 dB(A). It weighs 21.15kg net and measures 490 by 460 by 285mm. The warranty is three years for home use, one year commercial and 90 days for hire, capped at 1,000 running hours.
Where the paperwork disagrees
The downloadable manual does not match the web page everywhere. Its spec table gives a continuous running time of 2.2 hours and a net weight of 20.7kg, and the same page of the website quotes a different half-load noise figure in its FAQ. We have used the product table, which our comparison data matches, but plan your fuel on the shorter number until you have seen how long a tank lasts with your own appliances. When we checked on 2 November 2026 the maker's own shop showed it as sold out, though not discontinued.
The limits that matter at home
There is no 13A socket. To run ordinary plugs you need a 16A-to-13A adaptor lead or a site-style splitter, and a heavy-duty outdoor lead long enough to keep the machine well away from the house. A small tank means refuelling every few hours under real load, and you must stop the engine and let it cool before you do; the manual forbids refuelling while it runs. It has an overload light and low-oil shutdown, so check the oil before every use.
Carbon monoxide is the serious risk. Hyundai's manual says never to use it in a house, garage, large vehicle, boat or tent, and only outside, far away from open windows, doors and vents. The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland adds that fans will not stop CO building up and that you should have battery CO alarms inside. Never connect it to house wiring without an electrician-fitted changeover switch.
How it compares
The HY3250SEi on the generators page gives the same 3,000W continuous with electric start, a longer stated 5.5 hours at half load and a quieter 59 dB(A), at the cost of more weight. The HY2350Si and Champion 92001i are around 2kW, lighter and far easier to move, with longer stated runtimes; if your essentials total under about 1,800W, one of those is the saner choice.
Our verdict
A capable 3kW inverter for someone who wants that output in the lightest Hyundai body and is comfortable with a 16A lead and recoil start. Skip it if you want household sockets, electric start or long unattended runs; the HY3250SEi or a smaller 2kW machine fits better, and a battery power station avoids fuel and fumes entirely.

Who shouldn't buy this
You want electric start or several household sockets without an adaptor; the HY3250SEi already on this page is the better fit. A petrol generator must run outdoors only, well away from doors, windows and vents, never in a garage, shed, porch or tent, with a carbon monoxide alarm indoors. Connecting any generator to house wiring needs a qualified electrician and a proper changeover switch; never backfeed through a socket.

Questions
Can the Hyundai HY3900Si run a fridge-freezer?
A typical household fridge-freezer draws far less than its 3,000W continuous rating; check the appliance's rating plate, and remember its compressor needs a brief surge to start. You will need a 16A-to-13A adaptor because the generator has no 13A socket.
How long does the HY3900Si run on a tank?
Hyundai's product page says 3.6 hours at half load and 6.3 hours at 10% load from the 4-litre tank. The manual's table says 2.2 hours continuous, so plan for the shorter figure.
Can I use the HY3900Si in a garage with the door open?
No. Hyundai's manual says never to run it inside a building, garage or any confined space, even with doors and windows open. Run it outdoors, well away from openings, with a CO alarm inside the house.
What warranty does the HY3900Si have?
Three years for domestic use, one year for commercial use and 90 days for hire, or 1,000 running hours, whichever comes first, according to Hyundai UK.
