Katadyn BeFree AC 0.5L Water Filter Bottle

By Tom Calder

Our verdict · Researched
4.3 / 5

Katadyn's current BeFree adds an activated-carbon stage to its fast 0.1-micron membrane, so as well as removing bacteria, protozoa and microplastics it cuts chlorine and odours. At 72 g it rolls up small, and it cleans with a shake rather than a backflush kit. The soft flask is the weak point: treat it gently, and carry it as your portable option alongside stored water at home.

What we like

  • Fast flow of up to 2 litres a minute, with no pumping or waiting
  • Ultralight at 72 g, and rolls up small for a grab bag or coat pocket
  • Activated carbon reduces chlorine, odours and sediment as well as filtering

Worth knowing

  • A soft flask punctures more easily than a hard bottle
  • Doesn't remove viruses, so it isn't for floodwater or water that may carry sewage

Our review

Katadyn's BeFree AC pairs a fast hollow-fibre filter with an activated-carbon stage on a soft 0.5-litre flask. At 72g it disappears into a pocket, filters as quickly as you can squeeze and drink, and removes bacteria and protozoa from stream water, but not viruses or chemical pollution.

What it removes and what it does not

Katadyn says the BeFree AC removes cysts, bacteria, protozoa, sediment and microplastics, and that the carbon reduces chlorine taste and odours. Packstack gives the membrane's pore size as 0.1 micron, small enough for bacteria and protozoa such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium. Neither Katadyn's page nor the independent reviewers claim it removes viruses, and Packstack and Outdoor Gear Lab both say it does not. It is not a treatment for floodwater, water that may carry sewage, or chemical contamination.

Figures from Katadyn

Weight 72g. Flow up to 2 litres a minute. The hollow-fibre filter is rated for up to 1,000 litres and the carbon for up to 200 litres, both depending on water quality, with replacement carbon sold in packs of three. You clean the membrane in the field by shaking or swishing it in clean water, with no backflush syringe. Flow drops as it clogs, which tells you it needs cleaning or replacing. If the water is cloudy, let it settle or pour it through a clean cloth first; that keeps the membrane from clogging so quickly.

The limits

The soft flask is the weak point. Outdoor Gear Lab marked it down for durability, reporting flasks that leaked or broke, and Packstack describes the material as thin. Keep the filter from freezing: Packstack notes that freeze damage cannot be seen, so a filter that has frozen may no longer be safe. Keep it in an inside pocket in winter and replace it if in doubt. Do not use the flask for anything but filtering, and let it dry with the cap off before storing it, so nothing grows inside between trips.

In a UK emergency

If your water company issues a boil water notice, follow it: boil the water as instructed, rather than relying on a filter like this. Where the BeFree AC fits is a walking pack, a car kit or a grab bag, for drinking from a clear stream if you are caught out, or improving the taste of stored water. Our how to purify water in an emergency guide and boil water notice guide explain the order of choices, and stored bottled water stays the first line at home.

How it compares

On the water filter page, the Sawyer Mini is rated for far more water and is tougher, but slower and heavier to use. The LifeStraw Peak and MSR TrailShot are similar weights with rigid parts. Two picks go further: the GRAYL GeoPress and Water-to-Go bottle claim virus and some chemical removal, at the cost of weight or filter life. If floodwater or sewage is a real possibility, one of those or boiling is the answer.

Our verdict

The lightest and quickest way to drink safely from a clear British stream, with better taste than a plain filter. Skip it if you need protection from viruses or chemicals, or something that will survive rough handling in a vehicle kit.

Who shouldn't buy this

You need to treat floodwater or water that may carry sewage: no hollow-fibre filter removes viruses, so boil it or use a purifier. Choose a hard-sided filter if it will be knocked about in a vehicle kit.

Questions

Does the Katadyn BeFree AC remove viruses?

No. It removes bacteria, protozoa, sediment and microplastics. Viruses are not on Katadyn's list, and Packstack and Outdoor Gear Lab say it does not remove them, so boil water that may be contaminated with sewage.

How long does the BeFree AC filter last?

Katadyn rates the hollow-fibre filter for up to 1,000 litres and the carbon element for up to 200 litres, depending on water quality.

Can I use the BeFree AC during a boil water notice?

Follow your water company's notice and boil the water. A hollow-fibre filter is not a substitute for the treatment the notice asks for.

How do you clean a Katadyn BeFree?

Shake or swish the filter in clean water. It needs no backflushing, and Katadyn says flow returns once the membrane is clear.
