Levoit Core 400S review

Levoit Core 400S Smart Air Purifier

By Tom Calder

Our verdict · Researched
4.0 / 5

Levoit's biggest single-room coverage figure on this list at 166 m², with a clearly stated 6–8 month filter-replacement schedule. The catch is Levoit hasn't published CADR or noise figures for this model, so you're comparing room size alone against rivals that publish the fuller picture.

What we like

  • Largest stated room coverage on this list (166 m² once-hourly)
  • Clear, published filter-replacement schedule (6–8 months)
  • 3-stage HEPA plus carbon filtration traps particles to 0.3 microns

Worth knowing

  • No published CADR figure, so it can't be directly compared on airflow to rivals like the Winix Zero-S
  • No published noise rating, so you can't judge bedroom suitability against other models
  • No single confirmed Amazon.co.uk listing at time of writing — buying direct from Levoit is the safer route

Our review

The Core 400S is a tall Levoit cylinder with a laser PM2.5 sensor, a numeric readout and VeSync app control, rated for a 166 m² room at one air change an hour. The thing to grasp is that the coverage figure is generous and the machine behind it is modest: 38 W and 24 to 52 dB. It suits a big living room with a spare corner, run on auto and mostly forgotten about.

What the numbers mean

Levoit's UK page says the Core 400S cleans a 166 m² room once an hour or an 83 m² room twice an hour, and adds that this is for closed single rooms, not open-plan spaces. One change an hour is a low bar; two or more is what shifts pollen or frying smoke. A 433 m³/h CADR appears in an image caption on the same page, though not in the specification list, and the manual's own troubleshooting advice is that rooms over 37 m² take longer to purify. The filter is a three-stage cartridge: nylon pre-filter, a HEPA-grade main layer Levoit rates at 99.97% of particles at 0.3 microns, and an activated carbon wrap for smells and VOCs. Rated power is 38 W.

In a British home

The front display shows PM2.5 in micrograms per cubic metre, and the manual's bands are blue up to 35, green to 75, orange to 115 and red above that, with auto mode stepping the fan accordingly and never using turbo. Sleep mode runs below low speed and turns the display off after three seconds. The app adds a Quiet Auto mode that caps the fan at medium and an Efficient Auto mode that sizes a cleaning run to your room area. Levoit says to shut windows and doors while it runs, leave 38 cm clear all round, avoid rooms above 85% humidity and keep essential oil diffusers away. Our air quality tracker shows whether an open window or the purifier is the better answer today.

How it compares

The smaller Levoit Core 300S states a 258 m³/h CADR, which this model's specification list does not, and a 22 dB sleep mode for a bedroom or home office. The Winix Zero-S is the direct rival for a large room: 410 m³/h, a 100 m² rating and 27 to 51 dB, with a separate carbon stage. If quietness decides it, the Philips 2200 Series (AC2210) pairs 420 m³/h with a 13 dB floor and is in the comparison. The Core 400S wins on the readout and the app; the others win on published airflow.

Living with it

Levoit's manual, the US edition, rates it at 38 W, and the UK listing gives no wattage. At that figure it costs about 1p an hour at the Ofgem price cap unit rate of 26.32p per kWh for October to December 2026, so a full day on is roughly 24p. The replacement cartridge is the Core 400S-RF; Levoit says change it every 12 months and the app's filter percentage assumes 12 hours of use a day, while the pre-filter wants a vacuum every two to four weeks and the laser sensor one every three months. It stands 51.9 cm tall on a 27.4 cm footprint and weighs 5 kg. The panel gives four speeds, sleep, auto, a 1 to 12 hour timer, display-off and a display lock; the app stretches the timer to 24 hours and adds schedules. Levoit's warranty is two years, and direct orders from levoit.co.uk can be returned within 30 days with return postage at your cost unless the unit is faulty.

Our verdict

Buy it if you want a large-room purifier that shows you a number, runs itself and sips electricity, and you are content to trust the room rating rather than compare airflow figures. Look elsewhere if you want the quietest possible bedroom unit, or if you want to weigh CADR against rivals before spending, because Levoit's published specification still leaves that gap. Treat it as the living room machine and the Core 300S as the bedroom one.

Who shouldn't buy this

Don't buy it if you want to compare purifiers strictly on CADR before buying — Levoit doesn't publish one for this model.

Questions

How loud is the Levoit Core 400S?

Levoit's manual lists 24 to 52 dB. Sleep mode sits below the lowest of the four speeds and auto mode never selects turbo, so the top figure only applies when you choose turbo yourself.

What size room is the Levoit Core 400S for?

Levoit rates it for a 166 m² room at one air change an hour, or 83 m² at two, and says that applies to a closed single room rather than an open-plan floor. Its manual adds that rooms over 37 m² take longer to clean.

How often does the Core 400S filter need changing?

Every 12 months, Levoit says, using the Core 400S-RF cartridge; the app's remaining-life figure is based on 12 hours of use a day, so heavy use brings it forward. The pre-filter is cleaned, not replaced, every two to four weeks.

How much does the Levoit Core 400S cost to run?

Rated at 38 W, it uses about 1p of electricity an hour at the Ofgem price cap unit rate of 26.32p per kWh for October to December 2026, so leaving it on around the clock is roughly 24p a day.
