OutIn Mino Portable Electric Espresso Machine review

By Tom Calder

Our verdict · Researched
3.5 / 5

The smaller, tougher OutIn: a 67 mm tube that heats its own water and is rated IP67 against dust and water, which suits a car, a caravan or a bag. By OutIn's own lab figures it makes up to six cups per charge from room-temperature water, or 500-plus if you pour in water that's already hot, say from a flask. Like the Nano 2 it's one small cup at a time, and it takes ground coffee: a comfort item for a cold power cut, not a way to make hot water for a household.

Our review

OutIn's smaller battery espresso maker: a 67mm by 195mm tube weighing 685g that heats 50ml of water on its own 3,000mAh battery and forces it through ground coffee at up to 22 bar. The number to hold onto is six, the cups OutIn's lab gets from cold water on one charge. It suits a glovebox, a caravan locker or a grab bag, where the IP67 rating earns its place.

What the numbers mean

OutIn's spec table gives a 3,000mAh three-cell battery, a 30W USB-C input, and heating of 50ml of 25°C water to 93.3°C in 149 seconds. The pump peaks at 22 bar, the tank takes 50 to 70ml, and the basket holds up to 12g of grounds. OutIn's lab puts noise below 60dB(A) and the operating range at -15°C to 45°C.

IP67 is the headline: dust-tight, and able to withstand temporary immersion. OutIn describes it as splash, water and dust resistance, says the rating is not a permanent condition as seals wear, and excludes liquid damage from the warranty, so treat it as insurance against rain, not an invitation to rinse it under the tap.

In a UK power cut

Heating the water is where the battery goes, which is why OutIn's figures are six cups from cold against 500 or more with water that is already hot. The sensible pattern is a vacuum flask filled from a camping stove or before the cut, with the Mino doing only the pressure work, so one charge lasts a long outage. OutIn says the charger must supply 20V at 30W or more, so recharge it from a USB-C PD power bank of at least that rating rather than an old 5V brick. OutIn quotes 20% to 80% in 45 minutes and a full charge in about 90, says the Mino can be used while plugged in, and advises 20 minutes on a 30W charger first if it has run flat.

It makes one 50ml shot at a time for one person; hot water for tea or a hot-water bottle still needs a stove and kettle. See power cut preparation.

How it compares

The OutIn Nano 2 is the bigger sibling: 71mm by 236mm and 740g, a 5,000mAh 54Wh battery that OutIn rates at up to nine cups from cold and over 600 with preheated water, an 85ml stainless tank, an 8g basket, 21 bar, and 45W charging to full in about 100 minutes. Both take ground coffee or Nespresso Original Line capsules; the Mino's FAQ adds that Dolce Gusto capsules do not fit. We list no third self-heating machine, so the real alternative is the stove-and-kettle route on the comparison.

Living with it

OutIn recommends pure water because mineral water scales the heater, a damp cloth for the outside, no boiling water on the shell, and an internal flush by removing the lower parts, filling the tank and double-pressing the button. It suggests starting at 2.1 on its Fino grinder and warns that too fine or too much coffee builds pressure, leaks and can trigger the auto cut-off. Materials are food-grade plastic, steel and silicone with a Tritan cup. The warranty is a 12-month limited one; returns are accepted within 30 days of delivery, the buyer paying return postage unless the fault is OutIn's. Orders ship from the nearest of OutIn's US, EU or China warehouses with stock, and any import duty or tax is the recipient's to pay.

Safety

It is a lithium battery wrapped round a heater. OutIn says carry it in cabin baggage only and never use it on a flight, and notes that hot water touches some plastic parts. Charge it as you would any lithium device; our lithium battery fire safety guide has the basics.

Our verdict

Buy it if you want espresso in a van, a tent or a long outage and value the small size and weather sealing over cup count. Skip it if you drink several coffees a day away from the mains: the Nano 2 gives half again the cups and a bigger tank for a little more bulk. If what you really want in a power cut is hot drinks for the house, buy a stove and a flask instead.

Who shouldn't buy this

Don't buy it if you want capsules or a bigger cup: the Nano 2 takes Nespresso Original-compatible capsules and holds 85 ml.

Questions

How many coffees does the OutIn Mino make on one charge?

OutIn's lab figure is up to six 50ml shots from 25°C water, and 500 or more if you add water that is already hot from a kettle or flask. The battery is 3,000mAh and recharges fully in about 90 minutes at 30W.

Is the OutIn Mino waterproof?

It is rated IP67 for dust and water, which OutIn describes as splash, water and dust resistance that may lessen as seals wear. Liquid damage is excluded from its warranty, so do not submerge it on purpose.

Does the OutIn Mino take Nespresso capsules?

Yes. OutIn's product page and FAQ say it takes ground coffee or Nespresso Original Line capsules, including other Original Line brands, using the capsule adapter. Dolce Gusto capsules do not fit. Ground coffee goes in the basket, up to 12g per shot.

Can I use the OutIn Mino while it is charging?

Yes. OutIn's FAQ says the Mino can be used while plugged in. If it has run completely flat, OutIn recommends about 20 minutes on a 30W charger before brewing.
