Ring RWK2 winter kit review

Ring RWK2 Compact Winter Car Rescue Kit

By Tom Calder

Our verdict · Researched
3.6 / 5

Ring's RWK2 packs the four winter basics into one compact polyester case: a shovel to dig out of snow, a hi-vis vest, a foil blanket and a torch. Ring says the vest complies with EN 20471 and the shovel extends to 580mm. It is a starter kit rather than a complete one, so you would still add water, snacks, a phone power bank and warm layers.

What we like

  • Ring says the shovel folds to 240mm and opens to 580mm, so it stows easily
  • Includes a hi-vis vest that Ring states complies with EN 20471
  • Torch comes with its 3 AAA batteries, according to Ring
  • Single carry case keeps the items together

Worth knowing

  • Ring lists no first-aid kit, jump leads or warning triangle
  • A foil blanket gives emergency warmth only, not a substitute for proper layers

Our review

Ring's RWK2 Car Winter Rescue Kit is four winter items in a 600D polyester case: a folding snow shovel, a hi-vis vest and a foil blanket, plus a nine-LED torch with its AAA batteries. Ring's sheet gives the whole pack as 250 by 185 by 65mm and under 1.3kg, small enough to Velcro to the boot carpet. It is a starter kit for getting unstuck and being seen, not a breakdown kit.

What is in the case

Ring's specification sheet lists a heavy-duty foldable snow shovel, 240mm folded and 580mm extended, weighing 710g; a high-visibility vest it describes as compliant with EN 20471, the hi-vis clothing standard; a foil blanket; a nine-LED torch with three AAA batteries included; and a 600D polyester carry case. Pack size is 250 by 185 by 65mm and net weight 1.285kg on the sheet, or 1.32kg on Ring's web page, which also mentions a Velcro backing to stop the case sliding round the boot. Ring prints no warranty on either document, so check with the seller.

The shovel is the item that justifies the box. At 580mm it is a hand shovel for clearing snow from behind the wheels and in front of the exhaust, not a drive-clearing spade, and that is the job that gets a car moving again.

What the official checklists add

The Highway Code's rule 228 says not to drive in snow or ice unless the journey is essential, and lists an emergency kit of de-icer, ice scraper, torch, warm clothing and boots, a first aid kit, jump leads and a shovel. The RAC's winter breakdown checklist adds blankets, food and drink, a charged phone and a hi-vis jacket. Against those, the RWK2 covers the shovel, torch, vest and a blanket of sorts. You still need scraper and de-icer, proper warm layers, water and snacks, a power bank and, ideally, jump leads or a jump starter. Our car emergency kit checklist and driving in snow and ice guides fill in the rest.

The limits

A foil blanket is for an hour on a hard shoulder; it is not a substitute for a coat and a wool blanket on a night in a drift. There are no jump leads, no triangle, no first aid kit and no tyre repair. The vest is one size. The torch is a basic nine-LED unit, so keep spare AAAs with it and swap them each autumn. Treat the kit as a core to build on rather than a finished answer.

How it compares

On the car emergency kits page, the AA Winter Car Emergency Kit is the bigger bundle: booster cables, a shovel, torch, blanket, vest, poncho and snow cleats in a canvas bag. The Halfords kit covers the all-year breakdown side with a triangle, tow rope and foot pump but nothing for snow. The Ring RPPL300 jump starter replaces cables. The RWK2 is the smallest and lightest of the winter options, and the only one with a quoted shovel size; choose it for a small car or an under-seat stow, and the AA kit when the boot is empty.

Our verdict

Buy it if you want the snow shovel, vest and torch in one small case that stays put in the boot, and you will add layers, water, a scraper and a power bank yourself. Skip it if you already carry a shovel and a vest, or if you want a kit that also covers a flat battery and first aid, where the AA bundle or a jump starter and a separate first aid kit serve better.
