Silva Seek 420 review
Silva Seek 420 Hybrid Head Torch
By Tom Calder
The Seek 420 is a hybrid lamp: Silva says it runs on three AAA cells or its own rechargeable Hybrid battery, neither of which comes in the box. Silva quotes 420 lumens for about 3 hours and 10 lumens for up to 110 hours, UK retailer listings give 200 lumens for about 6 hours, and it has a red LED. It is a good fit for people who want AAA flexibility in a lighter, slimmer lamp than the H3.2.
- Best for
- A light AAA-or-rechargeable head torch for household use.
- Skip it if

What we like
- Works on ordinary AAA cells, so spares can be stored
- Silva lists a 10 lm level for 110 hours, plus a separate red LED
- Slim 25 mm headband, and 93 g with AAA cells fitted on Silva's figures
- Silva rates it IPX5, adds a button lock and gives a 5-year warranty
Worth knowing
- No batteries are included, so you must buy AAA or the Hybrid pack before it is useful
- The Hybrid rechargeable pack is a separate purchase
- Brightness at 420 lm lasts only about 3 hours on the maker's figures

Our review
Silva's Seek 420 is a hybrid head torch: it runs on three ordinary AAA cells or on Silva's rechargeable Hybrid battery, and neither is supplied. Silva quotes 420 lumens at the top, a 10 lumen low mode that runs for up to 110 hours, a red LED, IPX5 water resistance and a five-year warranty. It suits a household that wants a slim lamp fed from a drawer of AAA cells in a long power cut.
What you get
Silva's page gives three white modes: 420 lumens throwing 87 metres, 200 lumens to 67 metres and 10 lumens to 15 metres, with burn time up to 110 hours on the lowest. UK retailer tables fill in the rest: about 3 hours at 420 lumens and 6 hours at 200. There is a red LED for reading a map or checking on a child without waking the room, a lock to stop it switching on in a bag, and a battery indicator. Silva rates it IPX5, which means rain, not immersion.
Weight is where sources differ. Silva lists 80g for the lamp alone and 105g or 113g with a battery fitted, without saying which battery is which; retailer tables give 84g with the Hybrid pack and 92g with three AAA. Any of those is light. The warranty is five years on the lamp and two on the lithium battery.
Why hybrid matters in a power cut
A rechargeable head torch is only as good as the charge it had when the lights went out. AAA cells sit in a drawer for years, and a pack of them keeps a 10 lumen lamp going for weeks. The Hybrid battery charges by USB-C from a power bank for everyday use, and when it is flat you drop in AAAs. That is the argument for buying this over a sealed rechargeable lamp. The 10 lumen mode is the one that matters for a long outage: enough to move about the house and cook by, for 110 hours on Silva's figure. Our power cut preparation guide puts a head torch per person at the top of the list.
The limits
Nothing comes in the box but the lamp and headband, so budget for AAAs or the Hybrid pack and a USB-C cable before it is useful. Full power lasts about three hours, as with any AAA lamp of this output. IPX5 is fine for a wet walk, not for a dropped-in-a-stream rescue. Article numbers vary by colour, so check the model name rather than the number when ordering.
How it compares
On the head torches page, the Petzl Actik is the closest rival: 450 lumens, the same AAA-or-pack idea with Petzl's CORE battery, and AAAs included, so it works from the box. The Petzl Tikka is simpler and cheaper, at 350 lumens, also with cells supplied. The Ledlenser H3.2 is the budget AAA lamp with a fraction of the output. Against the Petzls, the Silva's draw is its five-year warranty, its slimmer band and a longer quoted low-mode runtime; its drawback is the empty battery bay.
Our verdict
Buy it if you keep AAA cells for a long power cut and want a light, well-made lamp with a red mode and a long low setting, and you are happy to buy the batteries. Skip it if you want a lamp that works the moment it arrives: the Petzl Actik ships with cells, and for most households that is the difference.
