St John Ambulance Large First Aid Kit review

By Tom Calder

Our verdict · Researched
4.0 / 5

A properly stocked, British Standard-compliant kit backed by the country's best-known first-aid charity, and it feels it: durable case, quality dressings and sensible contents. For a single small household it's more kit than you strictly need, but the completeness and provenance are genuinely reassuring.

What we like

  • Complies with BS 8599-1:2019 and comes from St John Ambulance, so the contents and quality are trustworthy rather than guesswork
  • Comprehensive coverage - burn dressings, foil blankets, eye pads, wound wipes, gloves and 100 plasters in a durable, wall-mountable box
  • Rated for 100+ people in low-risk settings, so it comfortably covers a busy family home or a small team

Worth knowing

  • Costs noticeably more than a generic home first-aid kit, and much of the piece count is plasters
  • It's a wall-box workplace kit, not a compact grab-bag, so it's less suited to the car or a rucksack

Our review

St John Ambulance's large workplace kit is a wall-mountable first aid box that conforms to BS 8599-1:2019, the British Standard for workplace kits. It is far more than one family strictly needs, but for a large household, a home business or a community building it gives standard-checked contents from the UK's best-known first aid charity.

What's in it

St John Ambulance lists 100 plasters, 12 pairs of large nitrile gloves, six medium (12 by 12 cm) and four large (18 by 18 cm) sterile dressings, four each of triangular bandages, finger dressings and eye pads, four packs of ten wound-cleansing wipes, three rolls of microporous tape, three foil blankets, two 10 by 10 cm hydrogel burn dressings, two conforming bandages, two Revive-Aid resuscitation face shields, a pair of scissors, a guidance booklet and a wall bracket.

The box measures 34 by 10 by 35 cm. St John Ambulance doesn't give a single piece count; adding up its list, counting glove pairs as one, comes to 152.

What the standard means

BS 8599-1 sets out what a workplace first aid kit should contain, so a kit that conforms has been stocked to a published list rather than padded with extra plasters. The Health and Safety Executive tells buyers to look for BS 8599, while noting that by law a kit doesn't have to meet it and that contents should follow your own needs assessment. BSI published an amendment in April 2026, BS 8599-1:2019+A1:2026; check the current version if you need the kit for a workplace.

For a home, the practical benefit is the mix: proper large dressings for a serious cut, hydrogel dressings for burns and scalds, and foil blankets, which many cheaper home kits leave out. Our guides to treating a burn or scald and the home first aid kit checklist explain how to use them.

The limits

This is a box for a wall, not a bag to carry. It suits a kitchen, a utility room or a workshop, and won't fit neatly in a grab bag or a car door. Vehicle kits are covered by a separate part of the standard, BS 8599-2.

Like any kit, it contains no medicines, and the contents have dates. Check it a couple of times a year, replace what you use, and add your household's own medicines and any items for allergies separately.

How it compares

On our first aid comparison, the Lifesystems Waterproof kit is the portable choice for trips, with 32 items in a sealed bag but no standard behind it. The Steroplast 70-piece kit is a home and travel roll with ice packs and a foil blanket, and the Steroplast First Response bag suits someone who wants a grab-and-go responder kit. This SJA box is the one to pick when completeness matters more than size.

Our verdict

Buy it if you want one well-stocked, properly specified kit on the wall for a busy home, a home office with staff or a village hall. For a couple in a flat, a smaller kit plus a portable one for the car is the more sensible split.

A researched review, built from the maker's specs, manual and UK listings; facts checked 2 Nov 2026. Sources: St John Ambulance: Large Workplace First Aid Kit BS 8599-1:2019; HSE: What to put in your first aid kit; BSI: BS 8599-1 workplace first aid kits.

Who shouldn't buy this

You only want a small grab-and-go kit for the car, a day pack or a one- or two-person household - a smaller SJA Universal or a compact kit will do the job for less money and take up less space.

Questions

Is the St John Ambulance large kit BS 8599 compliant?

Yes. St John Ambulance says it conforms with British Standard BS 8599-1:2019, the standard for workplace first aid kits. BSI has since published an amendment, BS 8599-1:2019+A1:2026.

What's the difference between this and a home first aid kit?

It is stocked to the workplace standard's list, with large and medium sterile dressings, burn dressings, foil blankets and 12 pairs of gloves. Many home kits are smaller and lean more on plasters.

Can I keep it in the car?

It isn't designed for that. Vehicle kits are covered by BS 8599-2, and this box is meant to be wall-mounted. Choose a compact vehicle or travel kit for the car.

How many people does the large kit cover?

St John Ambulance's page we read doesn't give a headcount, and HSE says the right contents depend on your own needs assessment. For a household, the size is generous; for a workplace, base the choice on that assessment.
