Yale Linus Smart Lock L2 review

A genuinely useful way to add smart control while keeping your existing mechanical lock and key in place, but it doesn't add insurance-rated security itself — Yale's own recommended companion cylinder is TS007 3-star rated, a different standard from the BS3621 most insurers ask for, so check the small print rather than assume.

Our review
Yale's retrofit lock for a euro-cylinder door: a 146mm bar on the inside that turns your existing thumbturn, with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Matter built in, a rechargeable battery and a door sensor in the box. What matters most is that your key and cylinder stay exactly as they are. It suits a household that wants remote locking and guest codes without calling a locksmith.
What it is
Yale's getting-started page gives the L2 as 51.7 x 146.2 x 45.75mm without the thumbturn and 648g, and the product page calls it twice as fast and quieter than the first Linus. It fixes to a mounting plate over the inside of a euro-profile cylinder, using the thumbturn adapter in the box so a physical key keeps working from outside; Yale's FAQ says a 22mm round or Swiss cylinder can be fitted with the adhesive backer, and warns that some doors will need a cylinder change. The Yale Dot and a DoorSense magnet are included, so the app shows whether the door is open as well as whether it is locked. Remote locking, an activity feed, alerts, Auto-Lock, Auto-Unlock and guest keys or codes run through the free Yale Home app; PIN entry needs the separate Smart Keypad or Fingerprint Keypad.
Fit on a British door
On a single-point euro mortice door the L2 does the whole job. On a uPVC or composite multipoint door the motor turns the cylinder but cannot lift the handle, so the household still lifts it on the way out; Yale sells the L2 with a backplate handle for multipoint doors with handles, listed for lift-to-lock and auto-engage mechanisms, or with a cradle pull escutcheon. Yale's compatibility checker asks for the handle-to-keyhole centre, the backset and how far the thumbturn protrudes, so measure those first.
Battery, charging and a power cut
Yale quotes up to six months per charge in normal use, with turns per lock, door stiffness, daily openings and signal strength all shortening it; the alert comes at 20%, followed by daily emails and pushes as it falls. Charging takes one to five hours through USB-C from a 5V 1 to 3A charger; neither the charger nor the cable is in the box, and the pack is sold as a spare. The lock cannot run from the mains. In a power cut it keeps working on the battery and over Bluetooth at the door; remote control and Matter stop with your router, and the key still works. Wi-Fi can be 2.4 or 5GHz.
How it compares
The SwitchBot Lock Pro is the closest match on our pages: also clamp-on, it swaps the rechargeable pack for four AA cells SwitchBot rates at six to nine months, fits British oval cylinders too, and needs a SwitchBot hub for remote control. Nuki's Smart Lock Go (2025) with Keypad also fits over your cylinder and has a keypad for up to 200 codes in the box, where Yale sells keypads separately, but it runs on AA cells and Nuki sells remote access for it as an extra. Insurance and standards
The L2 is a motor on the inside of the door; Yale makes no BS 3621, TS 007 or Sold Secure claim for it, and whatever rating your cylinder has today stays in place. If you upgrade, Yale's Platinum Ultra 3 Star thumbturn cylinder is Kitemarked to TS007:2024 at three stars, Secured by Design approved and Sold Secure Diamond, with a ten-year guarantee, and Yale lists it as working with the L2; a TS 007 cylinder is still not a BS 3621 mortice deadlock, so match the words in your policy. Living with it
Matter runs over the built-in Wi-Fi with Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings hubs, and older locks gain it through a firmware update; Yale says the Matter 1.2 Open Door action currently needs Home Assistant. Lock sounds can be muted in the app within Bluetooth range. Up to five Yale Dots pair with one lock, and guests can only operate it within Bluetooth range. Yale's UK guarantee is two years, returns are free within 14 days of delivery, and no cylinder comes in the box.
Our verdict
Buy it if you have a euro-cylinder door, want remote locking and a door-open sensor without a bridge, and like keeping your key. Pass if Yale's checker rules your door out, if you want a keypad in the box, or if you would rather swap AA cells than charge a pack.

Skip this if you need a lock that is itself BS3621-insurance-rated; check your existing deadlock's own certification instead, since the Linus L2 doesn't add one.

Does the Yale Linus L2 need a Wi-Fi bridge?
No. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are built in, so remote locking and the Matter connection work from the lock itself. Matter needs only your smart-home platform's own hub.
How long does the Yale Linus L2 battery last and how do you charge it?
Yale says up to six months in normal use, with a 20% alert. Charging is one to five hours over USB-C with a 5V 1 to 3A charger; the charger and cable are not supplied, and a spare pack is sold separately.
Will the Yale Linus L2 work on a uPVC multipoint door?
Yes with the backplate-handle version, which Yale lists for lift-to-lock and auto-engage locks, but the motor only turns the cylinder: someone still has to lift the handle to throw the hooks before it can lock.
Is the Yale Linus L2 BS3621 approved?
No. Yale makes no BS 3621 claim for the L2; it is an add-on that leaves your cylinder's own rating unchanged. Yale's 3-star cylinder carries a TS 007 Kitemark, which is a different standard.
