The annual pack comes with four refill cartridges. It's a comfort-and-quality upgrade for everyday drinking water, not an emergency purifier: it needs mains pressure and doesn't disinfect.

Be clear what a filter jug is for
Improving the taste and reducing the limescale and chlorine of water that's already safe from the mains. None of these purify water — they won't make floodwater, rainwater or a contaminated supply safe, which needs boiling, tablets or a dedicated purifier.
The spec that separates them is certification.
A cheap carbon jug improves taste; the ones worth paying more for carry independent NSF/ANSI (or EN 17093) certification for specific contaminants — lead, PFAS 'forever chemicals', heavy metals. ZeroWater filters to zero dissolved solids and includes a meter; Brita and Aqua Optima focus on taste and limescale. Match the claim to what your water actually needs.
Then do the sums on running cost, because that's where jugs get expensive.
A cartridge lasting 100–150 litres is roughly a month for a household — and the cartridges, not the jug, are the real annual cost. Refillable systems (Phox) and long-life tap filters (TAPP) cut both plastic and cost if you'll stick with them.

What does a water filter jug actually remove?
Most reduce chlorine taste, limescale and some metals; better-certified ones (e.g. ZeroWater) also cut lead, PFAS and other dissolved solids. None remove bacteria, viruses or parasites — they're for improving safe mains water, not purifying.
Do filter jugs remove limescale?
They reduce it — carbon/ion-exchange cartridges soften the water and cut scale, which is why they're popular in hard-water areas. They don't eliminate it entirely, and cartridge life is shorter in hard water.
ZeroWater or Brita — which is better?
ZeroWater filters more thoroughly (to zero TDS, with lead/PFAS certification and a meter) but the cartridges are dearer and shorter-lived. Brita is cheaper to run and fine if you mainly want better taste. Pick by whether you're chasing contaminant removal or just taste.
Can I use a filter jug for emergency or rainwater?
No. A jug won't make floodwater, rainwater or a compromised supply safe — it doesn't disinfect. For that you need to boil the water, use purification tablets, or use a certified microbiological filter.
How often should I change the cartridge?
Typically every 100–150 litres, or about a month for a household — sooner in hard water. Most jugs have an indicator. An overdue cartridge stops working and can worsen taste.
