Is UK tap water safe to drink?
A calm, sourced answer: UK mains tap water is among the safest in the world. What the regulation says, why taste isn't safety, and the one genuine caveat — lead pipes.

The short answer: yes
UK mains tap water is among the safest in the world, and it's worth saying so plainly because a great deal of marketing depends on making people doubt it. Public tap water in England and Wales is regulated by the independent Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) under legally enforceable standards (Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own equivalents), which set maximum limits for microbiological, chemical and other parameters.
In 2024, public water supplies in England met the drinking water standards in 99.97% of tests — one of the strongest compliance records anywhere. And tap water is tested far more often than bottled water: many thousands of times a year at the source, the treatment works, in the network and at customers' taps, whereas bottled water is mainly checked at source and can then sit in plastic for months.
Taste isn't the same as safety
The things people most often dislike about tap water are sensory, not safety, issues. The faint taste or smell of chlorine is a deliberate, required disinfection safeguard that keeps water safe as it travels through the pipes — the World Health Organization's health-based guideline for residual chlorine is 5mg/l, and UK levels sit well below that. Being able to taste it is a preference issue, not a hazard.
Hard water and limescale are caused by naturally dissolved calcium and magnesium. There's no health-based limit for hardness because these are essential dietary minerals; the problems hard water causes — furred-up kettles, spotting — are practical and aesthetic, not health risks. An unfamiliar taste, by itself, doesn't mean water is unsafe.
The one genuine caveat: lead pipes
There is one real thing to know about, and it doesn't come from the mains — it's lead, which can dissolve into water from old lead pipes or fittings inside some older properties. Lead pipework was commonly used to connect homes to the mains before 1970, so a house built before then may have lead pipes (homes built after 1970 are unlikely to). The regulatory limit is 10 micrograms per litre, and the plumbing inside your home up to the kitchen tap is the homeowner's responsibility.
If you're in an older property, you can reduce any lead risk by running the tap to clear water that's been standing in the pipes overnight before using it for drinking or cooking (a washing-up bowl's worth is usually enough), and by using cold water for drinking and cooking, since hot water dissolves more lead. Where a lead risk exists, water companies also dose the supply to reduce how much lead dissolves. If you're concerned, ask your water company about a lead test.
Private supplies are different
One exception to the 'tap water is safe' rule is private water supplies — boreholes, wells and springs — which serve around 1% of people in England (about 3% in Wales), mostly in remote rural areas. These are regulated differently: your local authority is the regulator, not the DWI, and the safety of the supply depends on it being properly tested and risk-assessed. If you're on a private supply, don't assume it meets mains standards — have your council test it.
When water genuinely isn't safe: boil water notices
On the rare occasions mains water might not be safe, your water company issues a 'boil water notice' — usually a precaution after tests or a network event raise the possibility of contamination. The advice is to bring water to a rolling boil and let it cool, and to use boiled or bottled water for drinking, brushing teeth, making ice, preparing food and cleaning baby feeding equipment until the notice is lifted. Boiling deals with bacteria, viruses and parasites like Cryptosporidium.
That's the system working as intended — you're told when to take extra care, which is precisely why, the rest of the time, you can drink from the tap with confidence.
