3M's data sheet lists the 9332+ as FFP3 NR D with an exhalation valve, the top of the three EN 149 classes. The flat-fold three-panel body stores easily and, per UK stockists, moves with the face as you talk. The valve means it filters what the wearer breathes in, not what they breathe out, and 3M recommends a fit test, so a clean-shaven seal matters.

Best for The higher filtration class for heavy smoke or fine dust, in a flat-fold shape that packs into a drawer or go-bag.

Good
  • FFP3, the highest of the three EN 149 classes, per 3M's data sheet
  • Flat-fold body is easy to store in a kit
  • 3M states a five-year shelf life from manufacture
Worth knowing
  • Valved, so exhaled breath is not filtered for others
  • Single use: marked NR (not reusable)
  • Rated for particles; 3M lists no gas or vapour protection

Who shouldn't buy it: You want a mask that protects people near you, or you have facial hair that stops the edges sealing.

A cup-shaped design 3M says it has made for over 40 years, from a maker with UK support. 3M lists the 8822 as FFP2 NR D to EN 149, with a Cool Flow valve that 3M says helps reduce heat build-up. The valve lets breath out unfiltered, so it filters the air the wearer breathes in, not the air they breathe out.

Best for A household stock of rigid, valved FFP2 masks for smoke, dusty clear-ups or cleaning jobs.

Good
  • Collapse-resistant cup shell, per UK retailer listings
  • 3M says the Cool Flow valve helps reduce heat build-up
  • Box of ten, enough to share across a household
Worth knowing
  • Valved, so your exhaled breath is not filtered for others
  • One standard size only, per 3M

Who shouldn't buy it: You need a mask that also protects others around you, or you have a beard or stubble that would break the seal.

JSP M632 FFP3
FFP3, EN 149:2001+A1:2009 · Yes, exhalation valve · Moulded cup shape · 10 masks

JSP's technical sheet lists the M632 as a moulded, valved FFP3 respirator to EN 149:2001+A1:2009, and its data sheet gives a 99% minimum filtration efficiency for the class. It comes in a box of ten. As with any valved mask it filters what the wearer breathes in, not what they breathe out, and the seal depends on a good fit.

Best for A moulded FFP3 mask from a British PPE maker for a household stock aimed at heavy smoke or dusty clear-ups.

Good
  • FFP3 class with a stated 99% minimum filtration efficiency
  • UK maker with a UK phone line on its technical sheet
  • CE certificate number published on JSP's technical sheet
Worth knowing
  • Valved, so it does not filter your breath for people nearby
  • Moulded shape takes more storage room than a flat-fold mask

Who shouldn't buy it: You need a flat-fold mask for a tight go-bag, or a design that also filters outgoing breath.

Dräger lists the X-plore 1320 V as the valved FFP2 member of its pre-formed X-plore 1300 range, which meets EN 149:2001+A1:2009 with the dolomite dust marking. The range comes in a universal size for FFP2 and has a four-point adjustable head harness. Dräger rates it for one work shift at most, and the valve means it filters what the wearer breathes in, not what they breathe out.

Best for A valved FFP2 from a respiratory-protection specialist for dusty clear-ups and smoke.

Good
  • Four-point adjustable head harness, per Dräger
  • Adjustable strap length, per Dräger
  • Individually wrapped, per a UK retailer listing
Worth knowing
  • Valved, so exhaled breath is not filtered
  • Dräger rates the range for one work shift at most
  • Rated for particles; Dräger lists no gas or vapour protection

Who shouldn't buy it: You want one mask to wear over several days, or one that also filters outgoing breath.

The honest bit
For smoke or pollution, the first advice from UKHSA is to stay indoors with windows and doors closed and to avoid strenuous activity outside, not to buy a mask. A mask is for the time you have to be out in it. A respirator only works if it seals, and HSE says tight-fitting masks do not seal over stubble or a beard, so if you will not shave, a mask of any class is not giving you the protection on the box. Every mask on this page has an exhalation valve, which means it filters what you breathe in, not what you breathe out: if the point is to protect a vulnerable person near you, you want an unvalved mask instead. None of these masks filters gases or vapours, including the carbon monoxide in a fire.

Before you buy

Start with the class, and take it only from the maker.

EN 149:2001+A1:2009 has three classes: FFP1, FFP2 and FFP3, and the standard sets a higher minimum filter efficiency and a tighter limit on leakage at each step. FFP2 covers most household uses; FFP3 has to meet the tighter limits, and NHS infection-control guidance specifies it for staff in the highest-risk settings. The letters that follow matter too: NR means not reusable beyond one shift, R means reusable, and D means the mask passed an extra clogging test with dolomite dust, which 3M and Dräger both state for their masks here.

Then decide on the valve, because it changes who the mask protects.

An exhalation valve opens as you breathe out, so warm, damp breath leaves unfiltered. 3M says its Cool Flow valve helps reduce heat build-up, and Dräger makes the same point about its CoolMAX valve, which is why valved masks are easier to wear for a long clear-up or a hot day. The trade-off is that a valved mask protects the wearer only. If someone at home is ill and the mask is meant to shield others, buy an unvalved FFP2 or FFP3 instead. All four masks on this page are valved.

Fit decides whether the class means anything.

HSE's guidance on respiratory protective equipment is clear that tight-fitting masks rely on a seal to the skin, and that stubble or a beard where the edge sits breaks that seal; HSE also says a face-fit test is needed for workplace use. At home you can at least do the makers' own seal check: cover the mask with both hands, breathe in sharply, and adjust the nose clip and straps until no air leaks round the edge. Children's faces are smaller than these standard-size masks are designed for, so do not assume an adult mask seals on a child.

Choose a shape for how you will store and wear it.

Cup-shaped masks like the 3M 8822, JSP M632 and Dräger X-plore 1320 V hold their form, and UK stockists describe the 3M shell as collapse-resistant, which helps in heat and humidity, but a box of ten takes drawer space. Flat-fold masks like the 3M Aura 9332+ pack into a go-bag or a coat pocket. Dräger's range has a four-point adjustable head harness; most others use fixed elastic straps. All of these are single-use NR masks, so a box of ten is a sensible household stock.

Check the date and buy from a source you trust.

3M states a five-year shelf life from manufacture for its Aura 9300+ range, and the date is printed on the box, so look for it when the masks arrive. Counterfeit respirators have been a known problem since 2020; buy from the maker's own listing or a recognised UK safety stockist, and expect to see the standard, the class, the CE or UKCA mark and the maker's name printed on the mask itself. Finally, keep expectations proportionate: these masks are rated for particles. They do nothing against gases, and they are no substitute for leaving a smoke-filled area.

How we choose

We verify every product's specifications against at least two independent sources, re-check its UK price and stock on a schedule where we can track it automatically, and cross-check safety-relevant claims against official guidance. Every review is labelled Researched or Used and reviewed by us: where we've bought a product, or been sent it free, and used it ourselves, its review says which; where we haven't, our verdict is a considered spec-and-evidence comparison, not a hands-on test — and commissions never change a ranking either way. Common questions

What is the difference between FFP2 and FFP3 masks?

Both are filtering half masks made to EN 149:2001+A1:2009. The standard sets a minimum filter efficiency and a maximum inward leakage for each class, and FFP3 has to meet tighter limits than FFP2 on both. FFP2 covers most household uses, and FFP3 is what NHS infection-control guidance specifies for staff in its highest-risk settings. Either only reaches its rated level if the mask seals to a clean-shaven face.

Do FFP2 masks help with wildfire smoke?

They can reduce the fine particles you breathe in while you are outside, if the mask seals well, and that is the main harm in wood smoke. UKHSA's advice during smoke episodes, though, puts staying indoors with windows closed first, and says to avoid strenuous outdoor activity. A particle mask does nothing against the gases in smoke, so treat it as a tool for necessary trips out, not as a reason to stay in smoky air.

Can I wear an FFP2 or FFP3 mask with a beard?

Not with any confidence that it is working. HSE says tight-fitting respirators need a seal to the skin and that facial hair where the mask edge sits stops them sealing, which is why workplaces require wearers to be clean-shaven. 3M recommends a fit test for its respirators for the same reason. If you will not shave, an FFP mask is not the right choice; a loose-fitting powered respirator is the workplace answer, and at home the honest option is to limit time in the smoke or dust.

What do the letters NR, R and D mean on a mask?

They come from EN 149. NR means the mask is not reusable and should be thrown away after one use or one work shift; R means it can be reused in line with the maker's instructions. D means the mask has passed an optional clogging test using dolomite dust, which shows it keeps breathing resistance acceptable as it loads up. 3M marks its 8822 and 9332+ as NR D, and Dräger states the D test for its X-plore 1300 range.

Does a valved mask protect other people?

No. The valve opens when you breathe out, so your breath leaves the mask without passing through the filter. That keeps the mask cooler and drier, which is why valved designs are common for dust and smoke, but it means a valved mask protects the wearer, not the people nearby. If the aim is to shield a vulnerable person at home, or a clinic or care home asks you to wear a mask, use an unvalved FFP2 or FFP3, or a medical face mask.

How long do FFP2 and FFP3 masks last in storage?

It depends on the maker. 3M states a five-year shelf life from the date of manufacture for its Aura 9332+ when stored as directed, and the dates are printed on the box. Check the date when a box arrives, keep masks in their packaging in a cool, dry place away from sunlight, and discard any that are crushed, damp or have perished straps. Once worn, a mask marked NR is for one use only.
