But carrying one in public is restricted: a folding non-locking blade under 3 inches (7.62cm) is the only type you can carry without needing a specific 'good reason'. A locking blade — which most full-size multi-tools have — or any blade over 3 inches requires a good reason to carry (work or a specific task), so a big Leatherman belongs in the home, car or camping kit, not your daily pocket.
Then match the tool to the job. For a home or emergency kit, prioritise strong pliers, a good selection of drivers (including the small ones for electronics and glasses), a saw and scissors — the things you actually reach for.
