AA Winter Car Emergency Kit review
By Tom Calder
A sensible, AA-branded bundle that covers the winter breakdown basics in one zipped bag. The individual items are budget-grade rather than best-in-class, but as a grab-and-go starting point for the boot it does the job at a fair price.
- Best for
- Drivers who want a ready-made cold-weather boot kit without assembling one piece by piece.
- Skip it if
- You already own a decent torch, jump leads and a hi-vis vest

Researched, not used. We haven't used this product. This review is built from the maker's specifications, owner reports and our own sizing.
What we like
- Covers the core winter essentials in a single grab bag - shovel, snow grips, hi-vis, torch, warmth and jump leads
- Compact zipped canvas bag stows neatly in a boot and keeps everything together
- Reasonable value for a complete bundle versus buying each piece separately
Worth knowing
- Components are basic - a thin foil blanket and a modest torch rather than premium kit
- No first-aid kit, food or water, and the standard pack omits a warning triangle

Our review
The AA Winter Car Emergency Kit, sold under licence by Saxon Brands as AA5281, puts the cold-weather basics in one zipped canvas bag: booster cables, a folding snow shovel, a torch, a foil blanket, a hi-vis vest, a rain poncho and a pair of snow and ice cleats. It suits a driver who wants a boot bag assembled for them. The parts are basic, and it is not a breakdown kit on its own.
What is in the bag
Saxon Brands' listing gives eight items: booster cables, a canvas carry bag, a COB torch, a foil blanket, a foldable snow shovel, a hi-vis vest, snow and ice cleats and a rain poncho. UK stockists describe the booster cables as three metres long and suitable for engines up to 2,500cc, which rules out larger diesels and most vans. Retailer listings vary on the torch, with some describing a nine-LED model and others the COB type Saxon names, so expect whichever is current.
The AA branding is a licence, not a sign the AA built the kit, and Saxon names no standards for the components. Several retailers call the vest EN 471 approved; that standard was replaced by EN ISO 20471, and the maker does not state either, so treat the vest as a visibility aid rather than certified workwear.
What it covers, and what it does not
The bag answers the three winter problems a driver can fix at the roadside: a flat battery, a car stuck in snow and being seen while waiting. The cleats are a thoughtful extra, since the walk from a stranded car is where people fall. The foil blanket and poncho are for an hour on a hard shoulder, not a night in a drift.
It has no warning triangle, no first aid kit, no water, no snacks and no phone power bank. Add a scraper and de-icer, a bottle of water, something to eat and a charged power bank, and keep warm layers in the car through the winter. Our car emergency kit checklist lists the lot, and driving in snow and ice covers when not to set off at all. Booster cables are only useful if you know the order of connection; our how to jump start a car guide walks through it.
How it compares
On the car emergency kits page, the Ring RWK2 is the smaller rival: shovel, vest, foil blanket and torch in a compact case, with no booster cables or cleats. The Halfords Car Emergency Kit covers the all-year breakdown side, with a warning triangle, tow rope, booster cables and a foot pump, but nothing for snow. A lithium jump starter such as the Ring RPPL300 replaces the booster cables for a driver who does not want to rely on a second car. The AA kit is the widest winter bundle of the three, and the only one with cleats.
Our verdict
Buy it if your boot is empty and you want a winter bag sorted in one go, particularly if you drive rural or hilly roads where snow and a flat battery are real possibilities. Skip it if you already own decent booster cables, a torch and a vest: a folding shovel and a set of cleats bought on their own fill the gap for less, and the bundle's components are the budget versions of each.

Who shouldn't buy this
Don't buy it if you already own a decent torch, jump leads and a hi-vis vest - you'll likely pay more for the bundle than simply topping up the couple of items you're missing.

What is in the AA Winter Car Emergency Kit?
Saxon Brands lists eight items: booster cables, a canvas carry bag, a COB torch, a foil blanket, a foldable snow shovel, a hi-vis vest, snow and ice cleats and a rain poncho. Stockists give the cables as three metres, for engines up to 2,500cc.
Does the AA Winter Car Emergency Kit include a warning triangle?
No. It has no triangle, no first aid kit and no tyre repair items. Add those separately, along with water, food and a phone power bank.
Is the hi-vis vest in the AA kit certified?
The maker states no standard. Some retailers say EN 471, which has been replaced by EN ISO 20471. Treat it as a visibility aid rather than certified workwear.
Will the booster cables start a large diesel?
Stockists rate the three-metre cables for engines up to 2,500cc, so they are for small and medium petrol and diesel cars. A larger engine needs heavier cables or a lithium jump starter.
