Hive Thermostat for Heating (Combi Boiler) with Hive Hub

The mainstream, widely supported option, and with the required Hub in the box it is the cheapest route into a well-known British Gas-backed ecosystem with OpenTherm modulation on compatible combis. Two things to be clear about before ordering: this is the combi version, so it controls heating only and there is no cylinder for it to manage, and Hive's published incompatibility list is long. Check your specific boiler against that list rather than assuming a mainstream brand means universal fit.

Our review
Hive's standard wireless thermostat in its combi form, bundled with the Hive Hub that links it to the app. It is the most familiar name on the page and the lowest-cost door into Hive's ecosystem, but it is heating only: there is no hot water channel on this receiver. It suits a combi household that wants a dependable app, voice control and the option of Hive radiator valves later.
What it is
Three parts. The thermostat is a 96mm square dial unit, 46mm deep, powered by four AA alkaline cells that Hive says should not be swapped for rechargeables. The receiver is a 90mm box wired to the boiler on 230V mains, in its single-channel combi version here. The hub, 90 by 90 by 24mm and powered over USB-C, links the two to your router by Ethernet or Wi-Fi; Hive recommends setting it up on a cable first and says devices should be within about 10m of it. All of them talk Zigbee locally. The receiver can be installed in relay mode or OpenTherm mode, and on an OpenTherm combi Hive claims up to 12% extra gas saving from modulating control, a figure it bases on a class V thermostat versus a standard one, for compatible combi boilers only and in a single zone.
Compatibility, honestly listed
Hive is unusually specific about what it will not do. Storage heaters, plug-in electric heaters and electric underfloor heating are out; wet underfloor heating is fine. Oil boilers work if they already have a thermostat or programmer, but Hive will not send an installer for them. Hive's engineers will not fit it to heat pumps or solid fuel boilers, including biomass, and Hive says it has not finished testing those systems, and Honeywell SmartFit or a Vaillant VR 65 control centre must be removed first. A list of Worcester Bosch models that only accept Worcester's own room stat is published on the product page; everything else Hive believes is compatible. Check that list before ordering rather than after.
Installing and using it
Hive's own wording is that fitting the thermostat needs competence in electrical wiring and DIY, and it recommends an experienced tradesperson or its British Gas-backed installation booked at checkout. Once running, the app offers schedules, a one-hour boost, holiday mode, a geolocation alert if you leave with the heating on, and frost protection that Hive's support pages say switches on below 7°C. Voice control covers Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple HomeKit and Siri Shortcuts. If broadband drops, Hive says the thermostat keeps following its schedule and you adjust it at the dial; if the hub itself is switched off, the thermostat may lose touch with the receiver, and Hive says the heating button on the receiver can switch the heating on temporarily.
How it compares
The tado X starter kit needs no hub, adds hot water control and a rechargeable thermostat, and is the better buy for a cylinder home. The Netatmo costs less but is relay-only with a 120VA limit and no modulation. For rooms, Hive's own radiator valve three-pack swaps onto existing valve bodies, and Hive says extra thermostats run up to six zones on an existing multi-zone system. Living with it
Hive's standard warranty is one year, extended while you pay for Hive+, which also unlocks the budget-led Saver mode. Hive recommends a 1.5Mbps internet connection. Its headline of up to £182 a year in savings assumes Ofgem's medium gas use of 9,500kWh and Hive's own assumptions, so treat it as a ceiling. Hive's battery guide asks for new non-rechargeable alkaline cells and says that once they go flat the heating switches off and can only be run from the receiver's buttons, so change them at the first low-battery warning.
Our verdict
Buy it if you have a combi, your boiler is not on Hive's exclusion list, and you value a mainstream app with voice support and a radiator valve range to grow into. Do not buy this version if you have a hot water cylinder, a heat pump, storage heaters or electric underfloor heating. Who shouldn't buy this
Don't buy it if you have a hot water cylinder to control — this combi SKU cannot, and Hive's Heating & Hot Water bundle is a different, dearer product.

Does the Hive Thermostat work without the Hive Hub?
Not as a smart thermostat. The hub is what connects it to the app, and Hive warns that if the hub is switched off the thermostat may be unable to talk to the receiver; the receiver's heating button can then switch the heating on temporarily. The hub is in this bundle for that reason.
Does the Hive combi thermostat control hot water?
No. This is the combi version with a single-channel receiver, so it controls heating only. Hive's Heating and Hot Water version with a dual-channel receiver is a separate product.
What happens to Hive heating if the internet goes down?
Hive says the heating keeps working and follows its schedule; you can adjust the target temperature at the thermostat, but the app will show the devices as offline until broadband returns.
Does the Hive Thermostat support OpenTherm?
Yes, on compatible combi boilers only and in a single zone, where Hive claims up to 12% extra savings from modulating control. On other boilers it switches the boiler on and off.
