The most complete package here for the money: OpenTherm or relay control, hot water control included via the bundled Programmer X, and no separate hub or bridge to buy because the Programmer is itself the Thread border router. It is also the one the manufacturer describes as genuinely self-installable, with in-app instructions tailored to your system, though the Programmer still wires in at the boiler — which is why tado sells professional fitting at £140. Note that the Matter and Thread support is smart-home connectivity, not any form of safety approval.

Our review
tado's second-generation wireless kit pairs a 17.8mm-thin battery thermostat with the Programmer X, the mains box at the boiler that handles heating, hot water and the Thread network in one. What matters most is that it does hot water and OpenTherm with nothing else to buy. It suits most gas or heat-pump homes that want a tidy single-zone system they can expand later.
What it is
The Programmer X wires to the boiler or heat pump over OpenTherm or a relay contact, runs on 230V, measures 96 by 156 by 27mm, and doubles as the Thread border router, so the thermostat and any tado X radiator valves talk through it without a separate bridge. The wireless unit is tado's 2nd gen Wireless Temperature Sensor X: 110mm square and 17.8mm deep, with an LED matrix display, a circular touch surface and a top button that can be set to show humidity or boost the heating. It has a built-in lithium battery charged over USB-C, and the kit we track is listed with a stand. The box also holds screws, sticky pads, wiring accessories and an installation cable, but not the USB-C lead.
Compatibility and installation
tado claims 95% of heating systems: gas boilers, heat pumps and water-based underfloor heating, over OpenTherm or a relay. It works alongside every tado X device, including first-generation ones, but not the older V3+ range, so an existing tado home may need a rethink. tado says you can install it yourself with guided set-up in the app; the Programmer still goes on the boiler's wiring, and tado offers fitting by a certified engineer through a partner for those who would rather not. For bigger homes tado suggests adding a Bridge X per 100 square metres to keep the Thread signal solid.
Hot water, Matter and the subscription
If your boiler or heat pump feeds a cylinder, the Programmer runs the hot water schedule as well as the heating; on a combi there is simply nothing to schedule. tado X is Matter and Thread enabled, and tado says it works with all major smart home platforms. The free app covers remote control, schedules, Room Link and Matter, and the schedule is stored on the device so it runs without internet. Geofencing, pre-heating, Energy IQ reports, open window detection, Care & Protect fault alerts and adaptive heating sit behind AI Assist at £3.99 a month or £29.99 a year, cancellable at any time. tado's headline saving of 22% on average, up to £244 a year on an average UK gas bill, is its own modelled figure and depends on how you heated before.
How it compares
The Hive combi thermostat needs its hub, runs on four AA cells and controls heating only, though it is the better-known brand. The Honeywell T6R-HW matches the two channels and OpenTherm and is specified for S, Y and W-plan systems, with Resideo's five-year warranty list behind it but no radiator valve range. For zoning from day one, Drayton's Wiser kits include two radiator thermostats; tado sells its own Smart Radiator Thermostat X to add rooms later. The full field is on our comparison.
Living with it
tado's help centre says the battery lasts up to a year (its launch release says more than a year), recommends a full charge before each heating season, and puts a full charge at four to five hours from any 5V, 0.5A USB-C charger; the sensor keeps working while plugged in. The warranty is two years, which tado calls a Premium Direct-Service Warranty, and orders from tado's own shop carry 30 days of free returns. There is no hub to power, but the Programmer and the boiler both need mains, so in a power cut the heating stops like any other system; see can a power station run a gas boiler.
Our verdict
This is the kit to buy if you want one box that does OpenTherm, hot water and smart-home connectivity without a hub, and you are comfortable with a short wiring job or paying someone for it. Skip it if you need room-by-room control immediately, if you already own V3+ tado kit, or if you want geofencing without a monthly fee, because the useful automation is in the subscription.

Don't buy it if you want room-by-room control out of the box — Drayton's Wiser Multi-Zone kits include two radiator thermostats, and this kit includes none.
