Hyundai 2.2kW Inverter review
Hyundai 2.2kW Petrol Inverter Generator (Electric Start)
By Tom Calder
A 2.2kW inverter generator with clean, pure sine wave output, so it's safe for laptops, routers and TVs, plus electric start and an eco mode that throttles down with the load. Like every petrol generator it must only run outdoors, well away from doors, windows and vents, and never in a garage, shed or porch, because of carbon monoxide.
- Best for
- A petrol backup for a long power cut that can run a fridge, lights and sensitive electronics.
- Skip it if
- You only need to keep phones, lights and a router going through a short cut

Researched, not used. We haven't used this product. This review is built from the maker's specifications, owner reports and our own sizing.
What we like
- Pure sine wave output, safe for laptops, routers and TVs
- Electric start, and an eco mode that cuts fuel use and noise at light loads
- 22.6kg: light enough to lift into a car boot
Worth knowing
- Needs petrol stored safely, and it can only ever run outdoors
- At 61 dB from 7 m it's quieter than an open-frame generator, but neighbours will still hear it

Our review
Hyundai's HY2250SEi is a 2.2kW petrol inverter generator with electric start, two UK sockets, a six-litre tank and a quoted 7.5 hours at half load, at 22.6kg. It gives clean power for a fridge, a router and chargers. Like every petrol generator it runs outdoors only, because of carbon monoxide.
What it is
Hyundai Power Equipment's page lists the HY2250SEi at 2.2kW maximum and 2.0kW continuous from a 79cc four-stroke engine, with pure sine wave output, electric start with a recoil backup, two 13A UK sockets and a 12V DC outlet. The tank holds six litres, and Hyundai quotes 7.5 hours at 50% load, about 0.7 litres an hour, rising to 1.25 litres an hour flat out. Noise is 61dB(A) at seven metres, and net weight is 22.6kg. The warranty is three years for home use, one year commercial and 90 days hire, up to 1,000 hours.
What 2kW runs
Two kilowatts continuous covers a fridge-freezer, a router, lights, phone and laptop chargers and a television together, with room to spare for a microwave in short bursts. It will not run an electric shower, an oven or a 3kW kettle, and a fan heater takes most of it. Add up the rated watts on the labels of what you want to run, allow for the surge when a fridge compressor starts, and read our guide to using a generator safely before the first run. Never connect a generator to the house wiring; plug appliances into it directly with outdoor-rated leads.
The eco mode lets the engine idle down under a light load, which is what saves fuel and keeps the noise nearer the quoted figure overnight; switch it off before starting a fridge or a pump, which need the surge. Run it for ten minutes every couple of months, with fresh fuel, so it starts when the lights go out.
Carbon monoxide: the rule that matters
Hyundai's own page says petrol generators must never be used inside because of the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. The NHS lists portable generators among the causes of poisoning and says never to use a barbecue or camping stove indoors or inside a tent. That means outdoors, on level ground, well away from open windows, doors and air bricks, never in a garage, shed, porch or conservatory even with the door open, and with a carbon monoxide alarm in the house. Store petrol in approved containers away from the house, and let the engine cool before refuelling.
How it compares
On our generator comparison the Champion 92001i is a close rival at the same output, and the Hyundai HY2350Si is a lighter recoil-start model with one socket. The Hyundai HY3250SEi steps up to 3.2kW for a household that wants to add a heater. If your list is lights, phones and a router, a portable power station does it silently indoors, and our guide weighs the two.
Our verdict
Buy it if you want a petrol backup that one person can lift, with electric start and a long run time, to keep a fridge and the essentials going through a multi-day cut. Skip it if you have nowhere outdoors to run it safely, or if your needs stop at phones and lights, where a power station is simpler, quieter and needs no fuel store.
A researched review, built from the maker's specs, manual and UK listings; facts checked 2 Nov 2026. Sources: Hyundai Power Equipment: HY2250SEi 2.2kW inverter generator product page; NHS: carbon monoxide poisoning; HSENI: carbon monoxide dangers from heating appliances and generators used indoors.
Who shouldn't buy this
You only need to keep phones, lights and a router going through a short cut. A battery power station is silent, with no petrol to store, and gives off no fumes, so unlike a petrol generator it can be used indoors; follow its maker's charging and storage guidance. A petrol generator must run outdoors, well away from doors and windows, because of carbon monoxide.
