Hyundai HY2350Si review

Hyundai HY2350Si 2000W Petrol Inverter Generator

By Tom Calder

Our verdict · Researched
4.0 / 5

A compact 2kW inverter generator with 1,800W continuous pure sine-wave output, which Hyundai lists at 18kg. It is lighter than the Hyundai 2.2kW already on this page and close in weight to the Champion 92001i, but it has one 13A socket where the Champion has two. It suits a household that needs to cover a few essentials rather than a kettle or heater. Like every petrol generator it must run outdoors only.

What we like

  • Pure sine-wave output, which Hyundai says suits laptops, TVs and other sensitive electronics
  • Hyundai lists 18kg, light enough for one person to lift into a car boot
  • ECO mode, with a stated 14.5 hours at 10% load and 5.7 hours at 50% load from the 4-litre tank
  • 3-year home warranty from Hyundai

Worth knowing

  • A single 13A socket means a multi-way extension lead if you need to power several things
  • Recoil start only; Hyundai lists no electric start
  • 1,800W continuous will not run a kettle, electric heater or other high-draw appliance

Our review

Hyundai's HY2350Si is a small petrol inverter generator: 2,000 W maximum and 1,800 W rated from a 79.7 cc engine, with one 13 A socket, a 4-litre tank that Hyundai says runs 14.5 hours at 10 per cent load, and a listed weight of 18 kg. It is enough for a fridge, router, lights and chargers through a long cut, and, as with any petrol generator, it has to run outdoors, well away from the house.

What it is

Hyundai's product page gives 2,000 W maximum and 1,800 W rated output, pure sine wave, from a 79.7 cc four-stroke engine with recoil start. Outlets are a single 13 A BS socket and a 12 V cigarette-lighter outlet, which the manual rates at 8.3 A. The tank holds 4 litres, and Hyundai quotes 14.5 hours at 10 per cent load or 5.7 hours at 50 per cent. Noise is listed at 59 dB(A) at 10 per cent load and 61 dB(A) at 50 per cent, both at 7 m. Net weight is 18 kg and the manual gives 480 by 285 by 460 mm.

The warranty is three years for home use, one year commercial, up to 1,000 hours. Oil is SAE 10W-30; the page lists 350 ml, though the manual's filling instruction says 0.41 litres, so fill to the mark rather than to a number. The manual says to change the oil after the first 10 hours and then yearly or every 100 hours.

Carbon monoxide: outdoors only

Hyundai's manual puts it in capitals: breathing in carbon monoxide fumes can cause death, and using a generator indoors in an unventilated area can kill you in minutes. It says never to use it inside a building with poor ventilation even if the doors and windows are open, never inside a confined space such as a house, garage, large vehicle, boat or tent, and only outside, far away from open windows, doors and vents.

Health and Safety Executive Northern Ireland's guidance for using a generator in an emergency says the same: do not use a generator indoors or in partially enclosed spaces including homes, garages and crawl spaces, do not operate it near open doors and windows, keep it outside and fuel it outside, and fit battery-powered carbon monoxide alarms inside your home. Never plug a generator into a household socket; connecting it to house wiring is a job for a qualified electrician with a changeover switch. Our guide to using a generator safely covers siting, leads and fuel.

What 1,800 W runs

A fridge-freezer, a router, LED lights and phone chargers together draw a few hundred watts, well within 1,800 W. A kettle, toaster or fan heater alone is 2,000 to 3,000 W and will trip it. With one socket you will run a heavy-duty extension lead with a multi-way block, so add up the labels before you plug in. At 10 per cent load the 4-litre tank lasts most of a day; at half load, less than a night.

How it compares

On our generator comparison, the Champion 92001i gives 1,900 W rated with two sockets at a similar weight. Hyundai's own HY2000Si is the older sibling, and the HY3250SEi steps up to 3,000 W for a household that wants more headroom. If your needs are lights, a router and a fridge for a day, a battery power station is silent and fume-free; see power station versus generator.

Our verdict

A light, inexpensive inverter generator with a long published runtime at low load and a three-year home warranty, suited to covering the essentials through a long cut. Buy it if you have a safe outdoor spot well away from doors and windows and will store fuel properly. Skip it if you have nowhere outside to run it, or if a power station would cover everything you need.

Who shouldn't buy this

You only need phones, a router and a few lights covered: a battery power station is silent and gives off no fumes, so it can be used indoors (follow its maker's charging and storage guidance). A petrol generator must run outdoors only, well away from doors, windows and vents, never in a garage, shed, porch or tent, with a carbon monoxide alarm indoors. Connecting any generator to house wiring needs a qualified electrician and a proper changeover switch; never backfeed through a socket.
