Ring Alarm Pack XL review

Ring Alarm Pack - XL + Indoor Camera (2nd Gen) with Alarm Outdoor Siren (by Amazon)

By Tom Calder

Our verdict · Researched
4.3 / 5

This is the biggest Ring Alarm bundle sold on Amazon UK and it covers a full house out of the box: six contact sensors, three motion detectors, a keypad, an indoor camera and an outdoor siren. It's a genuinely cheap first layer of home security, but treat the on-screen '£X saved' framing with a pinch of salt and budget for a Ring Home subscription if you want remote control or cellular backup.

What we like

  • Enough sensors for most 3-4 bed homes without buying add-ons separately
  • Self-monitoring (local keypad + app alerts) works with no subscription at all
  • Indoor camera and outdoor siren are bundled in, not extras

Worth knowing

  • Remote arm/disarm, cellular backup and video recording all need a paid Ring Home plan
  • 14 separate pieces to place and pair — a longer install than a basic 4-piece starter kit

Our review

Ring's largest UK alarm bundle: a Base Station, keypad, six contact sensors, three motion detectors, a range extender, the battery-powered Outdoor Siren and a plug-in 1080p Indoor Camera, fourteen items Ring says suit homes with three or more bedrooms. Settle first what should happen when nobody is home, because Alarm Calls and cellular backup are subscription features. It suits a family house wanting every ground-floor opening covered from one box.

What is in the box, and what the numbers mean

Ring lists one Base Station, one Keypad, six Contact Sensors, three Motion Detectors, one Range Extender, one Outdoor Siren and one Indoor Camera, all 2nd Gen. The Base Station's siren is rated at 104 dB at 30 cm and the keypad's at 75 dB at 30 cm; both are measured close to the sounder, so what the street hears is the outdoor unit's job, rated at over 100 dB at one metre with adjustable volume and flashing LEDs.

Sensors talk to the base over Z-Wave with a 76 m open-air, line-of-sight range, and the extender adds a further 76 m. Contact sensors take two CR2032 cells and motion detectors two AAs; Ring does not publish their life. The outdoor siren's three D batteries last about three years by Ring's estimate, assuming 90 minutes of sounding, and it is rated for minus 20 to 49 degrees; everything else is indoor-only. The warranty is one year, with security updates for at least four years after a device is last sold new.

Placing fourteen pieces in a British home

Six contacts cover a front door, a back door, patio doors and three reachable windows; three motion detectors typically go in the hall, living room and landing. Ring says its detectors ignore pets under 22 kg only at the lowest sensitivity and when mounted 2.1 metres up, so a bigger dog means relying on the contacts in its rooms. The keypad runs from a plug or its built-in battery.

The Indoor Camera plugs into a standard socket, films in 1080p, and has a privacy cover that cuts video and audio when swivelled across; recording and video history are Ring Protect features, with a 30-day trial in the box. Ring rates the Base Station's battery at up to 24 hours, so the alarm rides out a normal cut; phone alerts stop when your router loses power unless you have Cellular Backup or a router battery.

What a Ring Protect plan adds

Ring's UK plans run from Ring Solo at £4.99 a month for one device, through Ring Multi at £7.99 a month for every device at one address and Ring Pro at £15.99 a month, to a top tier at £29.99 a month with Guard Response, a 24/7 exterior call-out typically within 30 minutes. Ring's plans page lists Alarm Calls, which phone three emergency contacts, and Cellular Backup on all plans. One wrinkle: Ring's product page says both that digital arming needs a subscription and that app arming is free. Keypad arming and the sirens are not in question.

How it compares

The Ring Alarm Pack M is the same hub, keypad, outdoor siren and plans with two contacts and two motion detectors and no camera, sized for a two-bedroom home. The SimpliSafe 7 Piece Alarm also covers two openings and two rooms, quotes a 24-hour base battery and a 95dB siren, and offers Securitas guard response on its Pro Premium plan at £29.99 a month. The XL alone puts a camera in the box; the full line-up is on our home alarm systems page.

Insurance and the police

Police in England, Wales and Northern Ireland respond to alarms under a National Police Chiefs' Council policy requiring a remotely monitored system installed and monitored by NSI- or SSAIB-certified companies. A Ring kit is self-fitted and does not qualify, even with Guard Response, which sends a guard rather than the police. Tell your insurer precisely what is fitted and never tick "monitored alarm" for it.

Our verdict

Buy the XL if you have three or more bedrooms, want the whole ground floor covered in one afternoon and will use the camera; it is the sensible upper end of self-fit alarms. Skip it for a flat or small terrace, where the Pack M covers the same doors with far less kit, and skip the category if a police response is the requirement, which needs an installer, a grade and a monitoring contract.

Who shouldn't buy this

Don't buy the XL pack if you live in a flat or small house — a basic 4-5 piece Ring Alarm kit covers that for well under half the price, and you can add sensors later as needed.

Questions

Does the Ring Alarm Pack XL work without a subscription?

The keypad, the 104 dB base siren, the outdoor siren and mobile notifications all work with no plan. Alarm Calls, Cellular Backup and camera recording need Ring Protect, from £4.99 a month, and Ring's page is inconsistent on whether app arming is free.

How loud is the Ring Alarm Outdoor Siren?

Ring rates it at over 100 dB at one metre, adjustable, with flashing LEDs when the alarm triggers. Ring's set-up guide says it starts at the lowest volume and sounds for three minutes by default, so check both settings in the app once it is mounted.

How long does the Ring Alarm Base Station last in a power cut?

Up to 24 hours on its built-in rechargeable battery, according to Ring. The siren and keypad keep working; phone alerts stop when your router loses power unless you have Cellular Backup or a router battery.

Can the Ring Alarm Pack XL cover a detached garage?

Only within Z-Wave range: 76 m open-air line of sight to the base, plus 76 m through the indoor-only range extender. The outdoor siren is rated for minus 20 to 49 degrees and can go on an outside wall; the sensors are indoor-rated.
