Our review
The Sawyer Mini is a palm-sized hollow-fibre filter rated by Sawyer for up to 100,000 US gallons, about 378,000 litres, which is why it suits a home kit you buy once and keep. It removes bacteria and protozoa to a 0.1-micron standard but not viruses or chemicals, so in Britain it is a backstop for a supply failure, not a substitute for the boil notice.
What it is
Sawyer describes a 0.1-micron absolute hollow-fibre membrane that removes 99.99999% of bacteria such as salmonella, cholera and E. coli, 99.9999% of protozoa such as giardia and cryptosporidium, and all microplastics. It makes no claim for viruses, and Sawyer's support page says it does not remove metals, chemicals, pesticides or salt. The kit holds the filter, a 16 fl oz (about 470ml) squeeze pouch, a cleaning syringe and a straw. The filter alone weighs about 57g. It screws onto the pouch, onto a standard disposable water bottle, or inline in a hydration tube, and the straw lets you drink straight from a container.
Lifespan and care
The 100,000-gallon rating is Sawyer's own and assumes the filter is backwashed whenever flow slows, using the syringe to push clean water the wrong way through it. Sawyer also says to backwash before and after long storage. It is designed for no more than 20 psi of pressure, so Sawyer advises against connecting it to a tap. The one way to ruin it is frost: Sawyer says a filter that has never been wetted is safe from freezing, but once used it must be kept from freezing, and a filter that may have frozen should be replaced. There is no warranty for a frozen filter, so a used Mini belongs indoors, not in the car over winter.
What it does not do
A 0.1-micron filter stops bacteria and cysts, but the US CDC's travel guidance notes that microfilters of this size may not adequately remove enteric viruses such as norovirus. In a UK water emergency the first instruction is your water company's, as our boil water notice guide explains: boiling kills everything, and a filter is for when you cannot boil. Our emergency water purification guide compares filters, tablets and boiling. For river or flood water, pair the Mini with tablets or boiling.
How it compares
On the water filter straws page the LifeStraw Peak personal filter is the simpler grab-and-go straw, rated for 4,000 litres with the same bacteria and protozoa coverage. The GRAYL GeoPress is the one that also claims viruses, at far more weight and a short cartridge life. The Katadyn BeFree is faster to drink from. The Mini's case is its rated lifespan and the fact that it fits onto almost anything.
Our verdict
Buy it as the filter you keep at home for a supply failure or a long cut, where its rated volume and bottle fit make it the most adaptable choice on the page. Skip it if you want a straw you can hand to anyone with no instructions, since the squeeze pouch and backwashing take a minute to learn, or if viruses are the concern, where a purifier or boiling is needed.

Who shouldn't buy this
Don't buy it if you just want a grab-and-go straw — the LifeStraw is simpler for that job.

Questions
Does the Sawyer Mini remove viruses?
No. Sawyer claims bacteria, protozoa and microplastics at 0.1 micron, and makes no virus claim. For water that may carry viruses, boil it or use a purifier such as the GRAYL GeoPress.
How long does a Sawyer Mini last?
Sawyer rates it for up to 100,000 US gallons, about 378,000 litres, if it is backwashed with the supplied syringe whenever flow slows. Freezing after use ruins it and is not covered by warranty.
Can I attach the Sawyer Mini to a tap?
Sawyer advises against it. The filter is designed for no more than 20 psi, and mains pressure is far higher. Use the pouch, a bottle or gravity instead.
What comes in the box?
The filter, a 16 fl oz squeeze pouch, a cleaning syringe for backwashing and a drinking straw.
