Which water company supplies my address?

Enter your postcode to find the company that supplies your water, its number for no water or a leak, and whether a hosepipe ban applies. Below it: every supplier and the areas it covers.

By Tom Calder · Numbers checked on each company’s own website, 4 November 2026 · Supply zones from the Environment Agency

In short

Your water company is set by where you live: households can’t choose it. The quickest answer is your water bill, which names your water company and, if it’s a different one, your sewerage company. Without a bill, use the postcode box below. In Scotland your supplier is always Scottish Water, and in Northern Ireland it’s NI Water. In England and Wales there are 19 main suppliers, listed in the table.

Enter your full postcode. Works for England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

We look your postcode up with postcodes.io to find where it is, then match it to the water supply zones. We don’t keep it, and it isn’t added to the page address.

Water companies in England and Wales, and the areas they supply

Supply areas don’t follow council boundaries, so a council area can be split between two companies. The areas listed are the council areas each company mainly supplies. The number shown is the one each company gives for reporting no water, a burst or a leak. Hosepipe bans are from the Environment Agency’s weekly report to 29 October 2026: 10 of these suppliers had one in force.

Your sewerage company may be different

Some companies supply water only, so a different company takes away and treats your waste water. In England these water-only suppliers are Affinity Water, Bristol Water, Cambridge Water, Essex & Suffolk Water, Portsmouth Water, SES Water, South East Water and South Staffs Water, and Bournemouth Water (part of South West Water) in its area. Even where a regional company does both, some areas get water from one company and sewerage from another: in Hartlepool, for example, Anglian Water supplies the water and Northumbrian Water the sewerage. Ofwat says this can mean two separate bills.

There’s no open map of sewerage areas we can check your postcode against, so we don’t name a sewerage company. Your water bill names it, and CCW’s list of water companies shows which are water-only. Water UK’s postcode checker gives your water and wastewater provider from your postcode.

If your water goes off: what to do

  1. Check it isn’t just you. Try the cold kitchen tap, make sure your internal stop tap (usually under the kitchen sink) is fully open, and ask a neighbour.
  2. Check your water company’s website for a problem in your area and when it expects the water back. If nothing is listed, ring its number in the table above.
  3. Fill up while there’s pressure. Kettles, jugs and clean bottles for drinking; the bath or buckets for flushing and washing.
  4. If it lasts, water companies must have plans to provide water by other means. If your company sets up bottled water stations, it lists them on its website. If you’re on its Priority Services Register, it may deliver bottled water to your door.

The full guide covers toilets, hot water and what to do when the water comes back: no water coming out of your taps. Register for extra help in advance with the Priority Services Register.

What you’re owed when the water is off

Under the Guaranteed Standards Scheme, a company in England must restore an unplanned interruption within 12 hours of the supply going off or of it becoming aware of the problem, or for planned work by the time given in the notice. If it misses that, a household is owed £50, plus £50 for each further full 12 hours, up to twice your yearly water supply charge for one incident. It should arrive automatically, usually as a credit on your bill; if it’s paid late, the company owes a further £40, and if it couldn’t tell your home was affected you can claim, by phone or in writing, within three months.

Planned work needs at least 48 hours’ notice for a shut-off longer than four hours. In Wales, Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water and Hafren Dyfrdwy customers get the older amounts: £20 for a missed deadline, then £10 for each further 24 hours, and the deadline is still 12 hours, or 48 hours for a burst on a strategic main (a large trunk main).

A hosepipe ban doesn’t bring money off your bill; payments only come in if an emergency drought order cuts essential supplies (see the questions below).

Common questions

What water company services my address?

It depends only on where you live. Your water bill names your water company, and your sewerage company if that’s a different one. Without a bill, enter your postcode in the box on this page: it matches it to the Environment Agency’s map of water supply zones. In Scotland it is always Scottish Water, and in Northern Ireland, NI Water.

Can I choose or switch my water company?

Not as a household. Ofwat says household customers can’t change their water supplier or sewerage company: which one supplies your home depends on where you live. Some homes are supplied by a small local company rather than the regional one; your bill names yours.

Who do I call if I have no water?

Your water company’s supply or emergency line: the table on this page lists every company’s number. Check your internal stop tap first and ask a neighbour whether their water is off too. If it’s off for them, the company’s website usually shows the problem and when it expects the water back.

Is my sewerage company the same as my water company?

Not always. Some companies supply water only, so another company takes away your waste water, and in a few places the regional companies split it differently. Your bill names both. CCW, the water consumer body, explains who does what.

How much compensation do I get if my water is off?

In England, if your company doesn’t restore an unplanned interruption within 12 hours of the supply going off or of it becoming aware of the problem, a household is owed £50, plus £50 for each further full 12 hours, up to twice your yearly water supply charge for one incident. It should arrive automatically, usually as a credit on your bill; if it’s paid late, the company owes a further £40. In Wales, Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water and Hafren Dyfrdwy customers get the older amounts: £20, then £10 for each further 24 hours.

Will I get money off my water bill during a hosepipe ban?

No. Southern Water's code of practice, for example, says it doesn't offer rebates during a temporary use ban “as we don't charge customers for using a hosepipe”. Payments only come in if restrictions go much further. If an emergency drought order interrupts or cuts off essential household water (for cooking, washing, drinking and flushing the toilet), water companies in England and Wales are required by their licences to pay household customers £10 for each day or part day, up to the company's average household bill for the previous year. That doesn't cover watering the garden, washing the car or filling a pool, and nothing is owed if Ofwat judges the circumstances so exceptional that the company couldn't reasonably have avoided the interruption.

Can I get free water-saving devices from my water company?

Often, yes. The Consumer Council for Water (CCW) says most water companies offer free water-saving devices, such as strips that show a leaking toilet, shower timers and water-efficient shower heads. Ring your company and ask, or use the Get Water Fit tool on CCW's website (run by Save Water Save Money), which asks for your postcode and a few questions and shows where you could save. If you're on a water meter, using less water also cuts your bill.
