What you'll get in winter 2026/27
The Winter Fuel Payment is a tax-free payment to help pensioner households with heating. For winter 2026/27 it's £200 where the qualifying person is aged 66–79, or £300 where someone is aged 80 or over. Where two eligible people live together, the household total is split, so an individual amount can be £100, £150 or £200; care-home residents get £100 or £150. GOV.UK sums it up as 'between £100 and £300'.
You qualify if you were born on or before 27 June 1960 and usually live in England, Wales or Northern Ireland, based on the qualifying week of 21–27 September 2026. You don't need to apply — it's paid automatically, with most people paid in November or December 2026.
The £35,000 catch, explained
After being restricted to benefit recipients for one winter, the payment is back for all pensioner households — but with an income test applied afterwards. Everyone eligible is paid first, automatically. Then, if your total individual income for the year is over £35,000, HMRC takes the payment back.
Three things matter here. It's your own individual income that counts — your partner's income doesn't. It's a cliff-edge, not a gradual taper: income of £35,001 means the whole payment is reclaimed. And the recovery is automatic — through your tax code the following year if you're on PAYE, or via Self Assessment — so there's nothing you need to do.
One important protection: if you receive Pension Credit (or another qualifying means-tested benefit), you're exempt from the clawback regardless of your income — another reason to check whether you can claim Pension Credit. If you'd simply rather not receive the payment, there's an opt-out route on GOV.UK.
Scotland is different
Scotland has replaced the Winter Fuel Payment with its own devolved benefit, the Pension Age Winter Heating Payment. For 2026/27 that's £211.15 if the qualifying person is aged 66–79, or £316.70 if aged 80 or over, based on the same 21–27 September 2026 qualifying week. It's paid automatically once a year, and it carries the same £35,000 individual-income clawback via HMRC.
