Best fan heaters and ceramic fan heaters for one room UK (2026)
A fan heater is the quickest way to take the chill off one room: it blows warm air as soon as it is switched on and stops warming soon after it is switched off. That makes it right for a short spell on a landing, in a home office or in a bedroom while you get ready, and wrong for a whole evening in the living room. This page compares fan and ceramic fan heaters sold in the UK on power draw, settings, stated safety features, size and any noise figure given. We have not used any of them; every figure is credited to the maker or a UK retailer.

Our verdictOur verdictResearched De'Longhi's UK page lists the Capsule You&Me as a 2000W ceramic fan heater with 1000W as the lower setting, oscillation, a digital panel with remote, a timer and a tip-over switch. It is the most feature-rich fan heater here and compact at 1.3kg. Fan heaters respond fast but cool quickly, so it suits short spells in an occupied room. De'Longhi's page gave it a two-year warranty, and noise is listed at 45 to 48dB. Best for A small room where you want quick, evenly spread warmth you can set with a remote and timer. Good

Our verdictOur verdictResearched Dimplex describes the DXUC2BS as a 2kW upright ceramic fan heater with three power settings, warm or cool air and an adjustable thermostat. Fan heaters respond faster than the radiators and convectors here but cool down just as quickly and are noisier. It is the small, inexpensive end of a Dimplex-brand choice. Use it for short top-ups and keep it clear of curtains and fabric. Best for Fast warmth at a desk, on a landing or in another small space you only use for a short time. Good

Our verdictOur verdictResearched At 3kW this Dimplex draws about as much as a 13A plug is designed to carry, so it heats a large space faster than the 2kW models here, with two heat settings, a thermostat with frost setting and a cool-air option per the maker. That also means it must go straight into a wall socket, never an extension lead or adaptor, and it should not be left running unattended. Dimplex gives it a three-year guarantee on its page. For ordinary rooms a 2kW heater is the more measured choice. Best for A big heat boost in a larger room or conservatory when you are in the room and can watch it. Good

Who shouldn't buy it: The room is small or you want something to leave running: a 2kW radiator or a lower-power heater is safer and cheaper.

Our verdictOur verdictResearched De'Longhi lists the Capsule Hobby HFS30C24.DG with IP21 drip protection and a two-year warranty, and a UK retailer lists 1500W and 2400W settings, an adjustable thermostat, a two-position stand, a tip-over switch and a thermal fuse. That retailer puts it at about 45dB on higher settings, a noticeable hum. It heats a small room quickly but still suits short use. At 2.4kW it should go straight into a wall socket, never an extension lead, and must not be covered. Best for A compact, higher-output fan heater for a workroom, hobby room or other small space used in short spells. Good

Our verdictOur verdictResearched Dimplex lists the DXFF20TSN as a 2kW flat fan heater with two heat settings, an adjustable thermostat with a frost setting, and a cool-blow mode for summer. It stands about 11cm high, so it sits low on the floor. Like any fan heater it warms the air fast and stops warming soon after it is switched off, so it suits short bursts rather than all-evening heat. Plug it straight into a wall socket rather than an extension lead, and never cover it or let fabric near the grille. Best for A quick top-up of warmth in a small room or hallway you only use for short spells. Good

Our verdictOur verdictResearched Pro Breeze lists this 2000W mini ceramic fan heater at 1.44kg with three power modes plus fan-only, a thermostat, overheat protection and an anti-tip switch, for rooms up to 15 square metres. It is less established than Dimplex or De'Longhi, though Pro Breeze is a recognisable UK-sold brand. Noise is stated as 55dB, so it is audible. It is a short-spell heater, not a radiator replacement. Best for A small, light heater for a desk, caravan or tiny room that is occupied while it runs. Good

Our verdictOur verdictResearched Dimplex describes the DEUF2N as a 2kW upright fan heater with two heat settings, an adjustable thermostat with a frost setting and a cool-air option. Dimplex gives its size as 240 x 190 x 125mm with a carry handle, so it fits on a floor or a clear desk. It heats quickly and cools quickly, and the fan is audible, so treat it as a short-burst heater. Use a wall socket, not an extension lead, and keep it uncovered. Best for A small upright heater for a bedroom, study or hallway when you want warmth fast and only for a while. Good

Our verdictOur verdictResearched Dimplex describes the Desk Friend as a compact 400W ceramic fan heater for desks and bedside tables, with two heat settings, two fan speeds, an adjustable thermostat and a detachable handwarmer. At 400W it uses a fifth of the power of a 2kW heater, but Dimplex itself says it is for personal warmth rather than a whole room. Keep it on a clear, stable surface and plugged into a wall socket. Best for Warming one person at a desk or bedside when heating a whole room would be wasteful. Good

Who shouldn't buy it: You need to bring a whole cold room up to temperature.

Before you buy
Start with how long the room will be heated, because that decides whether a fan heater is right at all.
Fan heaters move air across a hot element or a ceramic plate, so the warmth is felt within a minute and gone almost as fast. That suits a room you use for twenty minutes: a landing while you dress, a home office until the house warms through, a workshop on a cold morning. For a room you sit in all evening, an oil-filled radiator holds heat and runs quieter, and our electric heaters page compares them. Choose a fan heater for speed, not for all-day warmth.
Ceramic or standard makes less difference than the listings suggest.
A ceramic fan heater warms a self-regulating ceramic element whose output falls as it gets hotter; a standard fan heater uses a wire element. Both turn the same watts into heat, so a 2kW heater of either type warms a room at the same rate and costs the same to run. Dimplex sells both kinds here. Form varies more: the flat Dimplex DXFF20TSN stands about 11cm high on the floor, the upright DEUF2N and DXUC2BS sit on a desk or floor, and the 400W Dimplex Desk Friend warms one person, not a room.
Size the power to the room, and be honest about the cost.
Most fan heaters are 2kW, which suits a small to medium room in a well-insulated home. The De'Longhi Capsule Hobby offers 2.4kW and one Dimplex flat heater 3kW; 3kW is about as much as a UK 13A plug is designed to carry, so those suit larger or colder spaces used briefly. Pro Breeze rates its mini heater for rooms up to 15 square metres. Each kilowatt uses one unit of electricity an hour, so a 2kW heater on full uses two units; a lower setting, such as 1kW or 1.5kW on the De'Longhi models, uses less.
Follow the Electrical Safety First rules every time, whichever heater you buy.
Plug it straight into a wall socket, never an extension lead or adaptor, because a heater's high, steady draw can overheat a lead or block. Never cover it or dry clothes on it, keep it well clear of curtains, bedding and furniture, stand it on a flat, stable surface, and switch it off when you leave the room or go to bed. Look for a stated overheat cut-out and tip-over switch: Dimplex lists both on its flat heaters and the DEUF2N, Pro Breeze on its mini heater, and a UK retailer on the Capsule Hobby.
Then weigh noise and controls.
Fan heaters are among the noisiest electric heaters, and only some makers give a figure: a UK retailer puts the De'Longhi Capsule Hobby at about 45dB on higher settings, De'Longhi lists the Capsule You&Me at 45 to 48dB, and Pro Breeze states 55dB; Dimplex gives none. At 45dB a heater is audible in a quiet bedroom. The DXUC2BS, Desk Friend and You&Me list a tip or tilt switch but no separate overheat cut-out. Most models have a thermostat and two or three settings; the You&Me adds a timer, remote and oscillation. Compact models weigh about 1.3kg to 1.6kg.
We verify every product's specifications against at least two independent sources, re-check its UK price and stock on a schedule where we can track it automatically, and cross-check safety-relevant claims against official guidance. Every review is labelled Researched or Used and reviewed by us: where we've bought a product, or been sent it free, and used it ourselves, its review says which; where we haven't, our verdict is a considered spec-and-evidence comparison, not a hands-on test — and commissions never change a ranking either way. Common questions
Is a ceramic fan heater better than a normal fan heater?
Not in the way the word suggests. A ceramic heater uses a self-regulating ceramic element that reduces its output as it heats up; a standard fan heater uses a wire element. Both put the same number of watts into the room, so a 2kW heater of either type warms a room at the same rate and uses the same electricity. The differences that matter are the stated safety features, the settings, the noise figure and the shape, which is why we compare on those rather than on the element.
How much does a fan heater cost to run?
Work it out from the power rating. A heater uses its rated kilowatts as units of electricity for each hour at full output, so a 2kW fan heater on full uses two units an hour, a 2.4kW model 2.4 units and a 3kW model three. Multiply the units by the rate per unit on your bill. With the thermostat set and the door shut, the heater cycles off once the room is warm, so real use is lower, but it remains one of the dearer ways to heat a room.
Can I plug a fan heater into an extension lead?
No. Electrical Safety First and the fire services say to plug a portable heater straight into a wall socket. A 2kW heater draws close to 9 amps for as long as it runs, which can overheat an extension lead or a multi-way adaptor, especially a coiled or partly unwound reel, and that is a known cause of house fires. If the socket is in the wrong place, move the heater rather than the lead, and never daisy-chain adaptors.
Is it safe to leave a fan heater on overnight or unattended?
Electrical Safety First and the fire services advise switching a portable heater off when you go to bed or leave the room, even one with a thermostat, overheat cut-out and tip-over switch. Those features reduce the risk if the heater is knocked over or blocked; they do not make it a heater for unattended use. Warm the bedroom before bed and switch the heater off, or use an electric blanket exactly as its instructions say. Keep any heater well away from bedding.
Can I use a fan heater in a bathroom?
Keep a plug-in portable heater out of the bathroom. Water, steam and wet hands do not mix with a mains heater, and the De'Longhi Capsule Hobby's IP21 rating covers only vertically dripping water, not splashes or steam; the other heaters here state no water rating. A heater for a bathroom should be a fixed unit designed for that location and installed by a qualified electrician, such as a wall-mounted heater or a heated towel rail. Until then, warm the bathroom by leaving the door open to a heated hallway.
Will a fan heater work in a power cut?
No. Every heater on this page needs a mains socket. A 2kW heater would empty a 1kWh portable power station in about half an hour at best, and only if its inverter can supply 2kW at all. Our keeping-warm-in-a-power-cut page covers what does work: layers, a hot water bottle, a sleeping bag and gathering in one room. Never use a barbecue, camping stove or outdoor gas heater indoors for warmth: they give off carbon monoxide.
