A neat way to get filtered water on demand without replacing your main tap, and it wastes no water in use — but it's a premium price for activated carbon and ion-exchange filtration, and BRITA's own guidance suggests hard-water homes will be changing the cartridge closer to every 3-4 months than the headline 12.

Our review
BRITA's 3-way tap replaces your kitchen mixer with one that has a third, blue lever pouring cold filtered water from a P1000 ion-exchange and carbon cartridge under the sink. Capacity decides it: BRITA rates the cartridge at 1,200 litres in water under 10 °dH but only 400 in very hard water. For homes with pressurised hot water that want less limescale at the tap.
What it is
It is a complete replacement tap: the rectangle version is brushed stainless steel, 29 cm tall and 2.3 kg, with a blue BRITA lever beside the mixer lever feeding cold filtered water through its own channel. BRITA rates filtered flow at 3.5 litres a minute against 7 for the mains side.
Under the sink, a filter head with a locking handle holds the P1000, a 1 kg cartridge of ion-exchange resin, which removes some of the carbonate hardness that becomes kettle scale, plus activated carbon for chlorine taste. BRITA also lists lead and copper from household pipework, and says the cartridge is TÜV, ACS and NSF certified.
Cartridge life in UK water
The 1,200-litre, 12-month claim applies at the filter head's setting A, for water up to 10 °dH. BRITA's manual gives 600 litres at setting B (10 to 17 °dH) and 400 litres at setting C (17 to 24 °dH). One German degree is roughly 17.8 mg/l of calcium carbonate, so setting C starts near 300 mg/l, where the Drinking Water Inspectorate's scale turns from hard to very hard.
By our arithmetic, a home drawing 4 litres a day would use 1,200 litres in about ten months, 600 in five and 400 in just over three. BRITA caps every cartridge at 12 months regardless. A light in the BRITA lever turns yellow at 90% of capacity and red when it is spent.
Fitting it in a British kitchen
You need the standard 35 mm tap hole, hot and cold supplies at a minimum of 2 bar and a half-inch angle valve on the cold feed, which the supplied T-piece tees off. The tap body is rated to 10 bar and hot water up to 60 °C, but the cartridge's limit, and the range on BRITA's product page, is 2 to 8.6 bar.
The hard stop is the hot-water system. BRITA says the tap must not be installed with a low-pressure boiler, which rules out vented, loft-tank hot water. The tell is simple: three hoses to your current tap means low pressure, two means you are fine.
How it compares
The closest rival here is the Doulton Ecofast: a ceramic and carbon candle rated at 2,300 litres and six months at 1.9 litres a minute, tested to NSF standards for cysts and lead and against bacteria, with no effect on hardness and its tap sold separately. The BWT In-Line Water Filter Kit is carbon only: 2,000 litres or six months, 2 litres a minute, small tap included.
BRITA's edge is one tidy mixer and the only cartridge of the three that reduces limescale; its weakness is capacity in hard water. If scale is your only complaint, many filter jugs use similar ion-exchange and carbon chemistry with no plumbing at all. More in the comparison.
Living with it
Cartridge changes need no tools: opening the locking handle cuts water to the cartridge, you vent pressure through a flush valve, swap it, reset the indicator and run at least a litre through. BRITA asks for a 2-litre flush after two or three idle days and 20 litres after four weeks away.
The filter head is designed for five years of service, the indicator's CR2032 battery for about two. The UK warranty is two years, extendable to three if you register within two years, and excludes limescale wear and poor installation.
Safety and when not to rely on it
UK tap water already meets Drinking Water Inspectorate standards, and BRITA says the cartridge is only for water of drinking quality, never microbiologically impaired or unknown supplies. Under a boil-water notice BRITA's instruction is to take the system out of use, boil as advised, then fit a fresh cartridge and clean the connections once the notice lifts. Boiling advice for babies or people with weak immunity applies to filtered water too.
Our verdict
Buy it if you have a combi boiler or unvented cylinder, a standard 35 mm hole and water hard enough that kettle scale annoys you, and will budget for a cartridge every three to five months rather than once a year. Pass if your hot water is tank-fed, if you rent and cannot change the tap, or if certified reduction of cysts and lead is the goal.

Who shouldn't buy this
Skip this if you're in a very hard water area and want to minimise ongoing cartridge spend, or if you'd rather avoid a second tap hole and professional install — a jug or fridge filter is a cheaper first step, and a plumbed RO system suits those wanting the broadest contaminant reduction.

How long does the BRITA P1000 cartridge last in hard water?
BRITA rates it at 1,200 litres only up to 10 °dH, about 178 mg/l: 600 litres from 10 to 17 °dH and 400 litres from 17 to 24 °dH, which covers most very hard areas. Twelve months is the ceiling in any water.
Can I fit the BRITA 3-way tap myself?
BRITA describes seven steps needing a 4 mm Allen key, spanners and a screwdriver: remove the old tap, fit the new one through the 35 mm hole, tee the cold supply and connect the hoses and filter head. If you are unsure of your hot-water type, ask a plumber first.
Does the BRITA mypure 3-way tap filter hot water?
No. Only the blue lever delivers filtered water and it is cold only; BRITA limits intake water to 4 to 30 °C. The mixer lever bypasses the filter entirely.
Will the BRITA 3-way tap work with a vented hot-water tank?
No. BRITA says it cannot be installed with a low-pressure boiler because of the risk of water damage. Combi boilers and unvented cylinders are fine.
