Best thermal curtains and linings UK (2026)
A heavy curtain, drawn at dusk, is one of the oldest ways to keep a room's warmth in through a British winter, and it needs no power, no installer and no permission from a landlord. The market has split into three kinds of product: ready-made eyelet pairs woven thick enough to count as thermal, single tall panels for doors, and separate linings that hook behind curtains you already own. This page compares all three from the makers' own pages and UK retailer listings. We haven't hung or measured any of them ourselves, so where a maker says a fabric keeps a room warmer, we treat it as the maker's claim.

Our verdictOur verdictResearched Deconovo's CTW11001 is a ready-made eyelet pair in the maker's range of triple-weave thermal blackout fabric. Deconovo says the fabric helps keep the cold out in winter, which is a maker claim rather than a measured figure. It suits a small window where you want a darker, slightly warmer room without paying for lined made-to-measure curtains. It is simpler than buying curtains plus a lining, and if you want more later, an eyelet lining such as the Nopton pair on this page can hook on behind it. Best for A low-cost eyelet pair for a small bedroom or box-room window. Good

Who shouldn't buy it: You have a large or draughty window, or want the heaviest curtains: a lined pair plus a separate thermal lining does more. See the draught-proofing page first if air is coming through the frame.

Our verdictOur verdictResearched These are separate linings that hook onto curtains you already own, so you keep the look and add a layer behind. The seller describes a three-pass polyester with a solar-reflective coating; the thermal benefit is a seller claim. The drop is about two inches shorter than the stated size, so they hang behind the main curtain. It is the standard-width tape-top choice here; the Rejuvopedic pair suits wider windows and the Nopton pair is made for eyelet curtains. Best for Existing curtains that look good but let the cold through. Good

Our verdictOur verdictResearched This is a single 132 by 214cm eyelet panel in Deconovo's thermal range. Deconovo describes it as suitable for doors and windows and says it reduces winter heat loss; that is the maker's claim, not a measured result. It is a hang-on-a-pole option, so it does nothing for gaps at the threshold or letterbox. Compared with the magnetic door curtain on this page it looks like an ordinary curtain, but you must pull it aside every time you use the door. Best for A tall single panel to hang over a front or back door. Good

Who shouldn't buy it: The door is in daily use and you dislike moving a curtain, or the gap is at the bottom edge: a draught seal on the door fixes the cause.

Our verdictOur verdictResearched Rejuvopedic's SRC lining is sold here as a wide pair with 20 hooks. The seller says the coating keeps rooms warmer in winter; no measured figure is given. It must be hung with plenty of fullness, as the seller notes, or the effect is reduced. The drop can be cut to length. Best for Wider windows where an existing pair needs a warm backing. Good

Our verdictOur verdictResearched The distinctive point is the removable thermal layer: fit it in winter, take it off when it is warm. That is useful for a room where you want the extra layer only in the cold months. The seller makes the energy-saving claim; no measured figure is given. It is a lesser-known brand and sold one panel at a time, so check you need to buy two. Best for Someone who wants a winter and summer setup from one curtain. Good

Our verdictOur verdictResearched This is a padded door cover that closes on its own with magnets, which suits a doorway used many times a day. The seller says the quilted fill keeps cold air out; no independent figure is given. It differs from the eyelet panels because it covers the whole doorway and needs no pole. It stops a draught at the doorway, not at the door's own gaps. Best for An internal or porch doorway you walk through often. Good

Our verdictOur verdictResearched The seller markets this as the lining for eyelet curtains, hooking onto the rings, with a reflective coating and a total-blackout claim. Both are unverified seller claims. It is the eyelet-specific lining in this group. Best for Eyelet curtains that need a heavier backing. Good

Before you buy
Decide first which of the three types you are buying.
A ready-made thermal pair replaces what you have: Deconovo's triple-weave eyelet range is the example here, sold in fixed widths and drops, and Deconovo says the fabric helps keep the cold out in winter, which is a maker claim rather than a measured figure. A door panel is one tall eyelet curtain for a front, back or hall door. An add-on lining is the cheapest route when your curtains already suit the room: a separate panel with hooks that hangs behind them. The lining route also suits renters, because nothing changes on the wall.
Measure before you order, because almost everything here is sold in fixed sizes.
Width is quoted per panel, so a pair listed at 46 inches gives two panels of that width, and Rejuvopedic advises at least double fullness across the window for its lining to work. Drop is measured from the eyelet or hook, not the top of the fabric; the lining sellers here cut the drop two or three inches shorter than stated so the lining stays hidden behind the main curtain, and their drops can be trimmed from the bottom. For a door, measure to the floor and allow for the pole height.
Read what the fabric actually is.
'Triple-weave' and 'three-pass' describe how the cloth is built, not how warm it keeps you: a triple-weave curtain is one thick woven fabric with no separate lining, while a three-pass lining is a base cloth with coatings applied in three passes, one of them dark, so it also blocks light. All three lining sellers here describe a solar-reflective coating; none publishes a datasheet, so we treat any thermal benefit as a seller claim. Check the care line too: Deconovo's panels are machine washable on a gentle cycle, but the three linings state no care instructions at all.
Hang them for heat, not just for looks.
Close curtains at dusk, before the room has cooled, and open them in the morning so the sun can warm the room and condensation on the glass can dry. Where a radiator sits under the window, finish the curtain above it or tuck it behind it, so warm air goes into the room. Keep curtains well clear of portable heaters: Electrical Safety First says to keep a heater at least one metre from combustible materials such as curtains and bedding, and never to dry clothes on it. A curtain cannot replace working heating.
For a door, choose between a pole-hung panel and a magnetic cover.
A tall eyelet panel such as Deconovo's needs a pole above the frame and must be drawn aside every time you use the door. A magnetic door curtain fixes to the frame with adhesive tape, covers the opening and closes behind you, which suits a busy internal or porch doorway, but it is one fixed size. Neither seals the gap under the door; a brush strip and letterbox brush do that. Never cover air bricks or wall vents, especially in a room with a gas, coal or wood appliance, which needs that air.
We verify every product's specifications against at least two independent sources, re-check its UK price and stock on a schedule where we can track it automatically, and cross-check safety-relevant claims against official guidance. Every review is labelled Researched or Used and reviewed by us: where we've bought a product, or been sent it free, and used it ourselves, its review says which; where we haven't, our verdict is a considered spec-and-evidence comparison, not a hands-on test — and commissions never change a ranking either way. Common questions
Do thermal curtains actually keep a room warmer?
They reduce heat lost through the glass when they are closed, and a thicker, lined curtain does that better than a thin one. How much that is worth in your room depends on the window, the gaps round it and how often the curtains are drawn. The makers on this page describe their fabrics as keeping cold out or reducing heat loss; none publishes a measured saving for a UK home, and we have not found an independent figure we can cite, so treat those lines as claims.
Should I buy thermal curtains or a thermal lining?
If your current curtains suit the room and hang well, a lining pair adds a thick layer behind them without replacing them, and it comes off again for summer or when you move. If the curtains are thin, short or tired, a ready-made thermal pair is simpler than curtains plus lining. Linings come in tape-top versions with hooks and in versions made to hang from eyelet rings, so match the lining to your curtain heading.
What is the difference between triple-weave and three-pass?
Triple-weave is a single thick woven fabric, usually polyester, dense enough to block most light and add weight; there is no separate lining. Three-pass is a coated fabric: a base cloth with coatings applied in three passes, one of them dark, which is what gives it blackout. Both terms describe construction rather than a tested warmth figure. A three-pass lining tends to be the stronger blackout; a triple-weave curtain is the simpler one-piece buy.
Can I hang a thermal curtain over a radiator?
Better not. A curtain that hangs in front of a radiator traps the warm air between fabric and glass, so much of the heat goes out through the window rather than into the room. Choose a drop that finishes just above the radiator, or tuck a longer curtain behind it, and keep the top of the radiator clear. Portable heaters are a separate matter: Electrical Safety First says to keep them at least one metre from curtains and other combustible materials.
What size thermal curtains do I need for my window?
Measure the pole or track, not the window, and buy a pair whose combined width is at least one and a half to two times that length so the fabric gathers; Rejuvopedic advises double fullness for its lining. Measure the drop from the eyelet or hook ring to where you want the hem: sill, below the sill, or floor. The linings on this page are cut a little shorter than the stated size on purpose, so they stay hidden behind the main curtain.
Will a thermal door curtain stop a draughty front door?
It takes the edge off the cold air coming through the doorway, especially a glazed one, but it does not seal the gaps. Air coming under the door, through the letterbox or round the frame still gets in, and that is usually what you feel in a hallway. Fit a brush strip and a letterbox brush first, which cost little, then add a door curtain if the hall is still cold. The options on our draught-proofing page cover those gaps.
