Best moisture absorbers and damp traps for cupboards, caravans and boats UK (2026)

A moisture absorber is a tub or bag of water-hungry crystals, usually calcium chloride, that draws water vapour out of the air in a closed space and collects it as liquid, with no plug and no noise.

Unibond's non-electric tub takes a 450 g tab and has a level indicator, and the maker says it suits rooms up to 20 square metres with a tab lasting up to three months. Yachting Monthly's reviewer gives the tank as 0.9 litres and says his own unit has lasted more than ten years. It is the best-evidenced trap on this page, but it collects a modest amount of water, so treat it as a top-up to ventilation, not a fix for a damp room.

Best for A small, cold room, caravan cabin or boat saloon where you want a refillable trap that is easy to see into.

Good
  • Maker states a 60% recycled plastic body and a level indicator so you know when to swap the tab
  • A Yachting Monthly reviewer says his unit is over ten years old and still going strong
  • Takes standard 450 g tabs, sold separately (see the four-pack below)
Worth knowing
  • No collection rate is stated, and the water it gathers is small next to a plug-in dehumidifier
  • Unibond's three-month figure varies with temperature and humidity

Who shouldn't buy it: You have a genuinely damp room: a dehumidifier (see our dehumidifiers page) and better ventilation remove far more water. Keep any trap away from children and pets, and dispose of the collected liquid as the pack instructs.

Unibond AERO 360 Compact
Compact refillable tub · 450 g tab; tank size not stated · Swap-in 450 g tabs · Up to 3 months per tab

A narrow shelf, window sill or cupboard floor where the standard AERO 360 is too bulky.

A smaller body for the same 450 g tab as the standard AERO 360, with a push-to-open refill slot, a pouring spout and a level indicator. Unibond's product copy, as carried by Ocado, says it is smaller than the standard device but achieves the same results, and its Amazon listing gives rooms up to 20 square metres. Choose it for tight spaces; for anything bigger than a wardrobe or small bathroom, a dehumidifier will do the heavy lifting.

Best for A narrow shelf, window sill or cupboard floor where the standard AERO 360 is too bulky.

Good
  • Same refill tab as the standard unit, so the tab supply is shared
  • Spout and level indicator make emptying and swap timing straightforward
Worth knowing
  • Unibond does not state the tank size, so how often it needs emptying is unclear
  • Water collected is modest compared with a plug-in dehumidifier

Who shouldn't buy it: You need to dry a whole damp room; our dehumidifiers page covers machines that do that. Keep any trap away from children and pets, and dispose of the collected liquid as the pack instructs.

Unibond AERO 360 Refills x4
Refill tabs, neutral scent · 4 x 450 g tabs · Fits AERO 360, 450 g devices · 1 to 3 months per tab

Four neutral-scent tabs for the AERO 360 and, per Henkel's listing, most other devices that take a 450 g tab. Henkel gives one to three months per tab depending on temperature and humidity, so the pack lasts somewhere between four months and a year. Buy it if you already own the device; it does nothing on its own.

Best for Keeping an existing AERO 360 running through a damp season without buying a new device.

Good
  • Neutral scent suits cupboards and bedrooms where fragrance is unwelcome
  • Four tabs in one pack spreads the cost across a season
Worth knowing
  • Needs a compatible device, it is not a trap by itself
  • Life of a tab swings widely with room conditions

Who shouldn't buy it: You do not already own a 450 g device; buy the complete AERO 360 above instead. The liquid left in the tub should be handled as the pack says, and kept from children and pets.

Kontrol's Streamline is a window-sill tub with an easy-pour spout, a calibrated reservoir and a clip-lock lid. A UK stockist says it holds just over a litre, and refills come in 500 g and 2.5 kg bags, which suits keeping several traps going. This Amazon listing is a three-pack from a third-party seller, so check what arrives.

Best for A bathroom or utility window sill, with cheap bulk refills for several traps.

Good
  • Clip-lock lid and pour spout aimed at spills
  • Large bags of refill crystals suit several traps
  • Calibrated reservoir shows how much water has collected
Worth knowing
  • No maker spec page; the figures here come from UK stockists' listings
  • Sold here as a three-pack by a third-party seller, not Kontrol directly

Who shouldn't buy it: A single quiet cupboard is all you need, where one smaller trap is enough, or a damp room needs a dehumidifier (see our dehumidifiers page). Keep any trap away from children and pets, and dispose of the collected liquid as the pack instructs.

Loose refill crystals in two 2.5 kg bags for Kontrol's Streamline and Mega traps. It is the economical way to keep a few traps going, but only if you own the traps. Bags are heavy and the crystals need keeping sealed and out of reach between uses.

Best for Running several Kontrol traps for a season or more without buying refills a tub at a time.

Good
  • Large quantity lowers the refill cost per trap
  • Scent-free version suits bedrooms and wardrobes
Worth knowing
  • Only useful with compatible traps
  • Loose crystals are handled more than tabs

Who shouldn't buy it: You have one trap, where a smaller bag is enough, or you want a sealed refill with no handling. The crystals and the liquid they collect can irritate skin and eyes, so keep them from children and pets.

ANSIO says its hanging bags use hydrophilic crystals that take in up to three times their weight in water, with first drops in 4 to 7 days and a life of 4 to 6 weeks. That is a sensible, low-effort way to protect clothing in a closed space, but each bag holds only a small amount, so replace them as they fill. A twelve-pack covers about a year for one wardrobe.

Best for Wardrobes, caravan lockers and boat cupboards where a floor tub will not fit.

Good
  • Hangs on the rail, so it uses no floor space
  • Disposable, so there is nothing to empty or refill
Worth knowing
  • Small capacity per bag, so they need replacing every month or so
  • Single-use, which makes more waste than a refillable trap

Who shouldn't buy it: The problem is a damp room rather than a closed wardrobe; look at the dehumidifiers page. Hang bags out of reach of children and pets, and dispose of full bags as the pack says.

ANSIO 500 ml Tubs x10

ANSIO says its disposable 500 ml tub of hydrophilic crystals shows a first drop in one to three weeks and lasts 4 to 6 weeks, and sells it in packs of ten. It suits several small spaces at once, but each tub is single-use and the collected liquid sits inside the tub under its lid, so it must stay upright. Not a substitute for a dehumidifier in a damp room.

Best for A cheap spread of small traps across cupboards, a caravan or a boat, without any refills to manage.

Good
  • Ten tubs let you cover several cupboards or a caravan at once
  • Nothing to refill: peel off the foil, refit the lid and leave the safety sheet in place
Worth knowing
  • Single-use, so ongoing cost and waste are higher than refillable traps
  • Must be kept upright and level to avoid leaks

Who shouldn't buy it: You want something that collects meaningful water in a whole room; use a dehumidifier (see our dehumidifiers page) instead. Keep tubs away from children and pets, and dispose of them as the pack instructs.

The honest bit
The largest tubs here hold around a litre and take weeks to fill: the right scale for a wardrobe or a caravan shut up for the season, and the wrong scale for a damp room. If a bedroom wall is wet in the mornings or there is mould behind furniture, a plug-in dehumidifier (see our dehumidifiers page) removes far more water, and free fixes matter most: open trickle vents, run extractor fans when showering and cooking, and dry washing outside where you can. GOV.UK's damp and mould guidance says the underlying cause must be found and fixed. A trap can tide a cupboard over; it cannot fix a house.

Before you buy

Start with the space, because that decides the type.

A refillable tub such as the Unibond AERO 360 or the Kontrol Streamline sits on a floor, shelf or window sill and is the sensible choice for a cupboard, a small bathroom, a caravan or a boat cabin where you can empty it. A disposable tub does the same job with nothing to refill, which suits spreading several across a boat or a caravan at once. A hanging bag clips to a wardrobe rail or a locker hook and uses no floor space at all. None of them is an answer for a whole room; that is a dehumidifier's job.

Read the capacity and the life as two different numbers.

Capacity is how much liquid a trap holds before it must be emptied or binned: Yachting Monthly's reviewer puts the AERO 360 tank at 0.9 litres, a UK stockist puts the Kontrol Streamline at just over a litre, and ANSIO's hanging bags are 210 g each. Life is the maker's estimate of how long a fill keeps working: Unibond says up to three months per tab, ANSIO four to six weeks for its bags and tubs. Both depend on humidity and cold, so a damp caravan in November fills a trap far faster than a landing cupboard in May.

Think about the refills before you buy the device.

The AERO 360 and its Compact version share the same 450 g tab, so one pack of refills keeps either going, and Henkel says the tabs fit most other devices that take 450 g. Kontrol sells loose crystals in 500 g and 2.5 kg bags for its Streamline and Mega traps, an economical way to run several, at the cost of handling loose crystals. Disposable tubs and bags have no refill: when they are full you bin them and open another. Over a winter that means more waste than a refillable tub, but no handling at all.

Handle the crystals and the liquid with a little care.

The crystals and the brine they collect irritate skin and eyes, so keep traps where children and pets cannot reach or knock them: a high shelf, a closed cupboard, the back of a wardrobe. Keep tubs upright and level; ANSIO tells owners to leave the safety sheet in place inside its disposable tubs. Empty a full tank the way the pack says, usually down the sink or toilet with plenty of water, then rinse the tub. Wash your hands afterwards, and rinse any splash in the eyes with plenty of clean water.

Finally, be honest about what you are solving.

A trap in a musty wardrobe, a caravan over winter, a boat between trips or a cupboard on a cold outside wall is a cheap, sensible habit. A trap in a bedroom with black mould on the ceiling is a way of not dealing with the problem. GOV.UK's damp and mould guidance treats mould as a health hazard, particularly for children, older people and anyone with asthma, and says the cause must be found and fixed. Our condensation, damp and mould guide walks through the free checks first; our dehumidifiers page covers the machines for when ventilation is not enough.

How we choose

We verify every product's specifications against at least two independent sources, re-check its UK price and stock on a schedule where we can track it automatically, and cross-check safety-relevant claims against official guidance. Every review is labelled Researched or Used and reviewed by us: where we've bought a product, or been sent it free, and used it ourselves, its review says which; where we haven't, our verdict is a considered spec-and-evidence comparison, not a hands-on test — and commissions never change a ranking either way. Common questions

Do moisture absorbers actually work?

Yes, within their scale. Calcium chloride crystals genuinely pull water vapour out of the air and the liquid you see in the tank is proof of it. The limit is quantity: the biggest tubs here hold around a litre and take weeks to fill, so they lower the humidity in a closed cupboard, wardrobe, caravan or boat cabin, but barely register in a living room with people breathing, cooking and drying washing. For a room, a dehumidifier or better ventilation does far more.

Moisture absorber or dehumidifier: which do I need?

Ask how big the space is and whether you can close it. A wardrobe, cupboard, loft hatch, caravan or boat locker suits a trap. A bedroom, bathroom or whole flat with condensation on the windows each morning needs a dehumidifier, and probably a look at ventilation and heating first. Many households end up with both: a machine for the room and a few traps in the cupboards it does not reach. Our dehumidifiers page covers the machines.

Where should I put a moisture absorber?

In the enclosed space you want to protect, away from children and pets, on a flat level surface where it will not be knocked. In a wardrobe, a hanging bag on the rail or a tub on the floor at the back; in a caravan or boat, one per closed compartment, including lockers under seats and berths. Keep the trap clear of the things you are protecting so a spill cannot reach them, and do not stand it on an unprotected wooden surface in case the tank overflows.

How do I dispose of the liquid from a damp trap?

Follow the pack, because instructions differ slightly between brands. For most calcium chloride traps the maker says to pour the collected brine down the sink or toilet with plenty of running water, then rinse the tub before refilling. Do not pour it onto plants or a lawn, as the salt harms them, and do not tip it onto metal, concrete or stone where it can stain or corrode. Wear gloves if your skin is sensitive, and keep the liquid away from eyes.

Are moisture absorbers safe around children and pets?

Only when they are out of reach. The crystals and the brine are skin and eye irritants and must not be swallowed, so treat a trap like a cleaning product: high up or in a cupboard a child cannot open, never on a nursery floor or where a dog can chew it. Rinse splashes in the eyes with plenty of water. If a child swallows crystals or liquid, call NHS 111 with the pack to hand, or 999 if they are seriously unwell; for a pet, call your vet.

Will a damp trap stop mould in my bedroom?

No. Mould on a bedroom wall or ceiling means the room is cold, under-ventilated, or has a building fault such as a leak or blocked airbrick, and a tub that collects a litre over several weeks will not change that. GOV.UK's damp and mould guidance says the cause must be found and fixed, and that mould is a health hazard, especially for children and people with asthma. Improve ventilation and heating, use a dehumidifier if needed, and if you rent, report it to your landlord in writing.
